Gun salute in honour of Queen Elizabeth's birthday

The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired a traditional 41 Gun Royal Salute at Green Park today, to mark the Queen's 88th Birthday. Queen Elizabeth is spending the day in private at Windsor Castle.

The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired a 41-gun royal salute from Green Park in central London at midday, using six 13 pounder First World War guns drawn by 71 horses.

An hour later the Honourable Artillery Company fired a 62-gun royal salute from Tower Wharf by the Tower of London.

Gunners from 105th Regiment Royal Artillery also fired two 21-gun royal salutes at Edinburgh and Stirling Castles.

Salutes were also fired in Northern Ireland and Wales.

Her Majesty has spent the day privately at Windsor Castle, a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said.

Before the King's Troop arrived in Green Park, the Band of the Honourable Artillery Company and Royal Yeomanry played a selection of celebratory music close to the firing position.
