Cecilie was nearly six feet tall, very unusual for a woman in those days, and was regarded as extremely fashion conscious. Her marriage to Crown Prince Wilhelm was deeply unhappy in spite of six children because Willy had a wandering eye. One of her two daughters had Downs Syndrome but was cared for within the family circle until her twenties.

Cecilie had family connections everywhere, as relatives on both paternal and maternal sides were very interconnected with other royal Houses. Her mother was the daughter of the Grand Duke Michael and Cecilie's uncles Nicholas, George and Sergei Michaelovich were all murdered in the Russian Revolution.

Yes, especially as Cecilie had black hair and dark eyes, almost Spanish looking and statuesque. Somebody must have been looking at the wrong princess!

Crown Princess Cecilie's father-in-law abdicated in 1918. The Empress decided to follow the Emperor into exile to The Netherlands. Cecilie did not consider leaving Germany a possibility.
She remarked, 'We are German and we have spent happy years in the fatherland: now we also wish to share the time of need.'
