There was great sadness at the premature death, in 1952 of King George VI, royal hero of the Second World War. Yet there was also a great hope and much expectation that the coronation of his daughter, the young and popular Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II, aged 25, came to the throne in very dramatic circumstances. On 31 January 1952, she had left with her husband on a foreign royal tour. King George VI, looking grey and gaunt, had been there to see them off. Some said later that the king somehow knew he would never see his daughter again.

Less than a week later, on 6 February 1952, news came to the royal couple who where in Kenya that the king was dead and that Princess Elizabeth was now Queen.
