Today is Liechtenstein's national day and the 15th Anniversary of Hereditary Prince Alois Regency. Alois has now been acting monarch for more than half of his father's reign.

When Alois does become the reigning sovereign prince, his regnal name and ordinal number will be Alois III. Aloys II was the sovereign Prince of Liechtenstein between 1836 and 1858. Aloys II is also listed as Alois II.

Liechtenstein celebrates 300th birthday ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/liechtenstein-celebrates-300th-birthday-128747/)

QuoteLiechtenstein?s royal family raised a glass with their people Thursday to mark the principality?s 300th birthday, holding a party in the gardens of Schloss Vaduz Castle.

Average citizens enjoyed beers alongside the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, Prince Hans-Adam II at the celebration. And whilst drinking with a monarch might sound unusual, this tiny nation with a population of around 38,000 sees itself as one big family.

?At the core of this party stands the idea to give every participant the feeling that he/she is an individuum which is part of a big community,? says the Liechtenstein 300 website. ?Everybody shall perceive himself/herself as part of a whole. As individuals, every person is, he/she is a precious part of the society.?

As a constitutional hereditary monarchy based on democratic and parliamentary principles, the Princely House is one of the few in Europe who actually plays a part in politics.

Liechtenstein was founded on 15 August 1719 when the shire of Vaduz and the lordship of Schellenberg were united under the decree of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI into the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein marks National Day ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/features/alois-hereditary-prince-of-liechtenstein-marks-national-day-147411/)

Typically the many of the residents dressed in tracht (folk costume) the principality turn out for the event and the princely family mingle in a large garden party atmosphere. (However its beer and wine instead of tea.)

QuoteAlois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, held his traditional speech on the occasion of Liechtenstein?s National Day, known as the F?rstenfest.

Due to the coronavirus measures, the speech took place not in the pasture next to the Vaduz Castle but in the rose garden. The public was not invited this year, but the speech was broadcast live on local tv channels and the internet. There was also no grand celebration in the centre of Vaduz, nor was there any fireworks at the end of the day. The rest of the Princely Family was also notably absent for the speech. The day also marked 16 years since Prince Alois took over as regent from his father, Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein.

In the speech, Alois expressed his hope that the people of Liechtenstein would have a happy day despite the limitations imposed by the coronavirus. He remarked that the small country had to learn the hard way that it needed to build a reliable digital infrastructure. He said, ?We need to improve our system, and also our educational system.?

He asked the people of Liechtenstein to gather only in small groups to celebrate National Day, and in the evening, they could join a torchlight procession.

The Lichtenstein Princely family seems to be always very discreet and private about the health of its members. I remember reading something about Marie?s ongoing bad health a couple of years ago in Marlene Koenig?s Royal Musings blog and that was the first I?d heard about it. Nobody?s ever said what exactly was wrong.

Yes @Curryong they're extremely discreet and it's very rare to see photos of them except for events like National Day or Papal funerals.  While Alois and Sophie do attend the occasional royal wedding, the family tends to just limit their public interactions to local events.

The now defunct Luxarazzi was one of the few royal blogs that kept updates on the family because of  the Lichtenstein-Luxembourg connection by marriage.

Marie and Hans Adam were even more private then Alois and Sophie. Even before Alois became regent, his parents would rarely make state visits. They took the very rare trip abroad outside of their neighboring countries.

The privacy was even more during the time of Franz Joseph II and Princess Gina. When Gina died, her reason for being hospitalized and for her death were never clarified. Same with her husband. It was known they were both ill for years but not with what. Franz Joseph collapsed at his wife's bedside and died less then a month after her.

It doesn't seem their privacy is going to change the next generations. Very little is know of Alois' and Sophie's kids.

Part Two-Life as the Princess of Lichtenstein.  Luxarazzi 101: Princess Marie of Liechtenstein (http://www.luxarazzi.com/2013/06/luxarazzi-101-princess-marie-of.html)

A few highlights: 1. Marie was five years older than Hans Adams, but when he met her when he was a teen it was love at first sight for him. It took awhile for Marie to be convinced.
                          2. The couple raised their family with  only  a housekeeper and a babysitter on the rare occasions that were abroad.

                          3. The couple have fifteen grandchildren. Seven of  are from their only daughter Princess Tatjana and her husband Phillip.

It is sad that so many funerals have been effected by covid.

Marie seems to have been a wonderful woman and from all I have read was very well respected by their people.  :flower3:

It seems fortunate that despite a number of senior royals having contracted covid in the past year, we didn't lose any to it (at least of any of the major families not sure about minor former royal families).

Yes, another funeral, like Prince Philip?s, where there would almost certainly have been a full complement of mourners from other royal families with cultural and family links to the ruling family and to the deceased.

Princess Marie?s children, their spouses and grandchildren will be present of course, as well as representatives from her birth family. Perhaps a couple of very close friends. That, sadly, might make up the full contingent allowed at this time.

Yes @TudorQueen -I agree that it is very fortunate especially since there's a good number of reigning or abdicated monarchs who are eighty years of age or older who could have been quite susceptible in those first months of the pandemic and prior to the vaccines.

@Curryong-For foreign royals, in pre-Covid times,  I'd have expected those with a marital relationship with the Lichtenstein family ie  Luxembourg. Then perhaps those with ties to the former Imperial Hapsburg family along with German representatives. Then I'd add any who was invited to a major Lichetenstein event ie those present at Alois and Sophie's wedding.

Yes they are not the most well connected royal house by blood.

Margaretha of Luxembourg is married to Marie's brother in law Nicholas. I could see Henri simply having his sister officially represent him.

I suspect we may see Astrid and Lorenz if safe. They are close to the Liechtenstein royal family. Two of Hans Adam's siblings were chosen as godparents to their kids (Pincess Nora is for Laetitia Maria and Prince Nikolas is for Prince Joachim).  They were also one of the few royal couples outside the German and Luxembourg royal houses at the wedding of Alois and Sophie (Felipe of Spain and Rainier attended as well).

Sofia attended Marie and Hans Adam's wedding. And Felipe was at Alois and Sophie's. Normally I would say Spain would likely send someone even if not the king or queen but not sure with covid they will.

Rainier attended events in the past in Liechtenstein but I don't know if Albert has any connection. And with Charlene's illness I am not sure he would come for it. I guess he could send one of his sisters. As a Princess of Hannover, Carolin would likely not be the only German title there.

The Hapsburgs might send a representative or two. Not sure any are personally close to the couple. Hans Adam's grandmother is the closest direct link.

Some photos of the Lichtenstein Princely Family from yesterday when Princess Marie's coffin was transported to St. Florian's. Also it's been confirmed that Queen Sofia of Spain will attend the funeral. Reportedly years ago, Princess Tatjana of Lichtenstein was proposed as a potential bride for Felipe so it appears to me that Sofia and Marie were friends for many years. Sofia also attended the wedding of Hans Adam and Marie in 1967.

And Felipe attended the wedding of Alois and Sophie. So it seems the relationship between families has continued.

I do believe the rumors of any relationship between Tatjana and Felipe were shot down by Tatjana herself. Though heaven knows perhaps the mothers had hoped for something their kids had no intention of.

Its nice that Sofia will be able to attend the funeral of her friend. Its not easy with everything going on.

Are numbers going to be restricted by Covid measures, or not? If they are I?d imagine that only family and very close friends will be present. If there is going to be a reasonable crowd then I guess some representatives from Belgium will be there, and Luxembourg as well, maybe even a Habsburg or two.

From what I have read restrictions in Liechtenstein are pretty minimal on events.

But there is still the restrictions of the countries the people are coming from. And their own concerns that may be a consideration as well.

I still lean towards Astrid and Lorenz coming from Belgium as they seem to have the closest relationship.

I don't know if Henri will bother sending anyone. His sister Margareta who is married into the Liechtenstein royal family, can represent him.

Spotted at the funeral service, in a black mantilla, was Queen Sofia of Spain. Caroline of Hanover (Monaco) was also present, and Prince Guillame of Luxembourg, I believe. I watched some of the service, which was beautiful. I have read elsewhere that a large contingent of Habsburgs were at the service but I?m not really familiar with the family. Absolutely beautiful floral tributes from Prss Marie?s family, including one from each of her grandchildren.

Monaco, Spain and Luxembourg were represented. I am surprised there were no Belgians as they are the only major catholic royal house not there.I thought Astrid and Lorenz would go as they as are close to the family. Perhaps they had something they could not get out of.

There seem to be some German and Hapsburgs there but I can't identify any and I haven't found any blogs that have.

Happier occasion for the family today. Today was the celebration of the wedding of Princess Maria Anunciata. :flower3:

Maria Anunciata is the daughter of Prince Nikolaus of Liechtenstein (the younger brother of Hans Adam II) and Princess Margaretha of Luxembourg (the younger sister of GD Henri). She is the 2nd of 4 children and eldest of two daughters.

Princes Maria Annunciata's dress features a wide skirt and puffy sleeves which remind me of her cousin Princess Astrid's dress. It's a good thing that the cathedral doors were wide enough.

I?m afraid I don?t care for this dress at all. I loathe lace as a material for wedding dresses anyway, it?s a material that?s been done to death in the last twenty years or so, and as for those sleeves, words fail me! They?re not so much leg o? mutton, a la 1890s, which were more rounded at the top then gathered anyway, as two large upturned bowls!

Princess MA?s headdress isn?t bad though not breathtaking in any way, but really, I?m sorry but the whole ensemble would win 1st prize in any ?Ugliest Wedding Gown? competition, royal or not, IMO.

Does Liechtenstein have a law that if the reigning Prince has only daughters, a daughter could succeed him?

No. Agnatic primogeniture still reigns. It was a case in the UN human rights in the early 2000s. Hans Adam II pointed out it was a family rule and didnt impact citizens so it was a private matter.

If there are no male heirs, the reigning prince can adopt an heir, so the line wont die out. There are currently 53 men in line so little concern.

The reigning Prince Alois has three sons so at present there?s no problem. But no, Lechtenstein does not follow Salic law. As has been pointed out before, if there is no male heir among nephews etc then a male can be adopted.

The first princess of African origin: Princess Angela of Liechtenstein ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/the-first-princess-of-african-origin-princess-angela-of-liechtenstein-88593/)

QuoteIn January 2000, Angela Gisela Brown became the first person of African heritage to marry into a ruling European family. The marriage was ground-breaking in Liechtenstein and the union did receive negative remarks from some of the royal family, although most were happy for the couple and did not express any prejudice towards their new princess.

Angela was born in Panama into an ordinary family and went on to study fashion at Parsons Design School in New York. Angela excelled in her studies and won an award upon graduating. Whilst running her own design company called A. Brown, Angela met her now husband Prince Maximilian of Liechtenstein.

Maximilian is the second son of the current reigning Prince of Liechtenstein, Hans-Adam II. As Maximilian is not set to inherit the throne, the couple married and have lived a relatively normal life for royals. Maximilian studied business and is now the Chief Executive Officer of the LGT group which is an asset management and private banking group. This enterprise which began in the 1920s has made Liechtenstein one of Europe?s most wealthy monarchies despite being a tiny state.

Angela and Maximilian currently have one son together, Prince Alfons who was born in 2001. Prince Alfons is 6th in line to the throne of Liechtenstein. Other than her background in design and her marriage to Maxmilian, little is known about Princess Angela as the family are keen to stay away from the public eye as much as possible.

@LouisFerdinand  not sure on exact numbers, but here is some more about the exhibit which seems to be the 'constant prince' not 'true prince'

Sounds like an extraordinary collection. I'd love to see it.

Many of the pieces are usually in the private apartments of the royals. They have an art collection that is said to be only second to the British royal collection. I studied art history as one of my minors, I'd love to explore either collection.

So would I! I think we all would. To go into the inhabited royal palaces of the world and see everything hanging on the walls, and in cabinets, not just the things that are on show in the collections the public can see, that would be a dream!

@Curryong One of the reasons I'd want to see this exhibit. They are displaying some pieces that have been buried in private royal rooms for centuries. One of those exhibits that is the closest to a walk in private royal suites as many get.

There are pieces commisioned by the Prince in the 1790s. They have not been displayed in public since Wenzel purchased them.

A profile of the first woman of African heritage to marry into a European royal or princely family, Princess Angela.

The first princess of African origin: Princess Angela of Liechtenstein ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/the-first-princess-of-african-origin-princess-angela-of-liechtenstein-88593/)

QuoteIn January 2000, Angela Gisela Brown became the first person of African heritage to marry into a ruling European family. Princess Angela is part of a new generation of European monarchies. As Europe becomes more globalised with people moving from all corners of the world, it is refreshing to see the old dynasties adapting. Whereas in the past it was impossible for a Prince to marry anyone other than a Princess from another European family, it is now becoming the norm for royals to marry for love. From Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg?s marriage to his Cuban bride Maria Theresa torince Haakon of Norway marrying a single mother and former waitress Mette-Marit, after hundreds of years of stale protocol the royal houses of Europe are finally modernising.
