Charles Spencer replied to an enquirer on his Twitter page about the amount of damages The Times had offered that they were ?haggling, as usual. ?No real shame?.

This isn?t the first time the Earl has sued over this story of his refusing Diana a house on the estate for country breaks (because the presence of security, the public and the media snooping around would be too much is the usual reason given by the Press.) He did refuse his sister the Garden Cottage on the Althorp estate as a staff member was living there, court documents showed, but offered several others, including the family?s original manor house.

Well, many people believe that the royal family are shape-shifters, aliens are among us and that Elvis still lives. (One poll had 76% of Americans believing the last in the 1990s.) People believe Jeffrey Epstein was murdered. That doesn?t mean any of it is true!

Amabel2

Its not quite the same..... And yes a lot of people beleive that Diana was murdered...

Earl Spencer will continue to sue newspapers, magazines and biographers who repeat the stories that he refused Diana a home then, and after he?s proved in Court that he did offer her several homes, as in this case, he will gain a great deal more money in damages. The Times has presumably learned it?s lesson and won?t be repeating the lie in the future.

Amabel2

well yes, I think he's right to do so.  These false stories can cause harm to real people....

TudorQueen

He has every right to. Their continued need to spread lies about him needs to stop. They are just looking for drama and stories.

For anyone who isn't familiar with it, this is the home (well one of them) he offered. Wormleighton Manor.

Wormleighton Manor - Wikipedia

The actual manor was burned by royalists in the civil war, why the family seat moved to Althorpe. All that remains is a gate house and tower cottage (the home was once larger then Althorpe). Definitely still would have made a safe, and nice home for Diana if she chose to take it.

Here is a description of what is currently there.

Maybe if the papers get sued enough, they will finally realize its not worth the financial loss to print this junk.

If Louis, Viscount Althorp would marry a princess who was a younger daughter of a monarch, would Louis' son necessarily be a prince?

No, she would remain a Princess and a Viscountess, but the son would be the Hon. (first name) Spencer. Then when his father becomes Earl Spencer in his turn the son will become Viscount Althorp.

All women in England take the title and status of their husbands (if they wish to.) Princesses, unless they marry Princes, do not endow their children with their own titles, under the English system.

QuoteCharles Spencer, 57, who resides at the family seat, Althorp, in West Northamptonshire, marked 30 years since the death of his father John Spencer.

Sharing the milestone on Instagram, Princess Diana's brother showed a picture of his father as a young man in uniform, accompanied by a picture which was taken at a later time in his life.

John Spencer died in 1992 aged 68 of a heart attack. Throughout his life, he occupied several distinguished roles, including equerry to King George VI and later Her Majesty the Queen.

One of John Spencer's happiest days may have been when he escorted his daughter Lady Diana down the aisle at St. Paul Cathedral on her wedding day.

Can this be true or a Sotheby's mistake, the tiara belongs and passes down from Earl to Earl Spencer?!

Kate Middleton's daughter Princess Charlotte set to inherit Princess Diana's special tiara | HELLO!

Quote
Sotheby's auction house, who are displaying the tiara in their Power & Image: Royal & Aristocratic Tiaras exhibition in London this week, the tiara is now set to be inherited by Princess Charlotte.

The catalogue note reads: "Having been worn by Princess Diana at her wedding, the Spencer Tiara is one of the most famous diadems in modern history. The tiara is reported to have been created originally in 1767 for Viscountess Montagu and remodelled by Garrard in the 1930s: the central motif was purportedly gifted by Lady Sarah Spencer to Viscountess Althorp, the grandmother of Princess Diana, in 1919, after which further motifs were added, resulting in the design we see today.

"In the mid-1970s, John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer, inherited the tiara. It was subsequently worn by all three of his daughters at their wedding: Lady Jane in 1978; Lady Sarah in 1980; and finally Lady Diana the following year, in 1981. The tiara was most recently worn by Celia McCorquodale - niece of the 10th Earl Spencer Charles - at her wedding in the Spring of 2018. The Spencer Tiara is now set to be inherited by Princess Charlotte."

I really doubt that the tiara is going to be inherited by Princess Charlotte who will have a vault full of tiaras to use in the future. If anything I believe it would stay with the Spencer family line.

LouisFerdinand

John Spencer is listed as 8th Earl Spencer. His son Charles is listed as 10th Earl Spencer. Charles is 9th Earl Spencer.

Curryong

It?s just sloppy and careless speculation by whoever assembled the exhibition catalogue IMO. I think the tiara will stay with the Spencers and may well be next used at their weddings by one or both of Charles Spencer?s adult twin daughters. He also has a younger daughter, I believe. There?s no need for Charlotte to have it. She is Diana?s granddaughter not a daughter.

If Diana had married one of the country gentry and had a daughter then maybe it could have been borrowed for her wedding and theirs. But she didn?t. Charlotte may very well go into private life as an adult and if at any time she needs a tiara she can be offered one from the vaults. Even Anne didn?t have many occasions to wear the one she was given as a young woman and things have certainly moved on in informality in the last forty years.
