Belgium?s King Albert reveals plans for days after he leaves hospital ? Royal Central

King Albert II of Belgium has a major engagement lined up ? even though he?s still being treated in hospital.

As the former monarch continues his recovery from symptoms of dehydration under medical supervision, it?s been confirmed that he plans to attend events to mark the tenth anniversary of the reign of his son, King Philippe.

Philippe will celebrate a decade as King of the Belgians on July 21st 2023, the country?s national day. It will also be the tenth anniversary of Albert?s abdication.

King Albert, 89, plans to be at the Te Deum in Brussels on the morning of July 21st and at a special concert being held that same evening.

However, as the plans were revealed, it was announced that his participation does depend on his health. He was taken to hospital earlier this week after being found with symptoms of dehydration. Doctors initially said he would be treated for a couple of days but later altered that to almost a week under hospital supervision. Soon afterwards, they said that he was so tired he had to limit the number of people at his bedside.

King Philippe and his brother, Prince Laurent, visited their father on the day he was admitted to hospital but since then, King Albert?s main companion has been his wife, Queen Paola.

Albert ruled Belgium from 1993 until his abdication in 2013.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium showed off her motherly nature as she played games with children battling cancer in Pelt today.

Mathilde, 50, visited the Kom op tegen Kanker  - which translates to 'stand up to cancer' - holiday camp this morning where she chatted with children aged between six to 17.

This camp is for children and young people of that age who are being treated for cancer or were treated up to a year ago.

The camp is a free holiday for the children and has been an annual event since 1989.

This year, 69 children who have faced, or are facing the cruel disease, were given the opportunity to go on the trip.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde see double at celebration of important anniversary ? Royal Central

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have visited the Belgian Senate to unveil a tribute for His Majesty?s 10th anniversary as Monarch: a set of two new busts.

Their Majesties arrived in the Senate?s Palace on the afternoon of 5th July 2023, and were welcomed by local authorities, before being escorted to the Green Hall.

There, they were presented with two new busts made of them by Belgian sculptor Hans Op de Beeck, who was also present for the ceremony.

And King Albert is due to be discharged from the hospital this afternoon.

ing Philippe is about to celebrate his tenth anniversary on the throne of Belgium, with many successes behind him that surprised his past detractors.

Many considered him too quiet and shy to be an effective leader, and when King Albert II announced his decision to abdicate, many were sceptical of Philippe?s abilities to carry the duties of a head of state on his shoulders.

However, ten years later, his detractors can look back and see how much the country and the monarchic institution needed a quiet leader, someone to do the job with not much fanfare but with determination all the same.

He maintained leadership in his family even in its most difficult time: with him not being monarch anymore, King Albert opened himself to the full extent of the law, which, after many decades, prompted an official recognition of a second daughter. It was then that Princess Delphine was given an official title and recognition as the daughter of a former sovereign.

King Philippe only released positive statements, and although he didn?t publicise it, he held several meetings with his half-sister. Because of his decisions, Princess Delphine was asked to attend family events, like the annual church service to commemorate deceased members of the Royal Family or the celebrations for National Day.

On the institutional front, King Philippe was at the helm of several political crises, including six government formations, the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental disasters.

He welcomed political leaders at the Royal Palace for round after round of discussions to ensure the formation of functioning governments.
