I had to stop for a moment and recall that with Prince Phillip's passing this past April, there are currently no living male consorts remaining. Prince Phillip was predeceased by his peers: the NL's Prince Claus and Denmark's Prince Henrik.


Another significant event that took place on Sept. 15, 1973 was the ascension of his father-in-law, King Carl Gustaf.

Strange to think that King Carl Gustav is only a little older than Charles yet has been King in his country for almost fifty years. Of course he might have been in Charles?s position for decades, considering the long lives of all the recent Swedish monarchs, had his father not suffered a premature death when CG was a baby.

In a way he  led just as emotionally repressed a life as his counterpart as his mother was, like Elizabeth II, not exactly demonstrative, though his older sisters were affectionate. And then of course there?s been the handicap of dyslexia which must still be a burden. Still, today, here he was taking the salute in the Palace courtyard and surrounded by his children and many grandchildren, so it hasn?t been a bad life at all.

@Curryong-Yes it is very strange when you consider that due to the tragic death of his father, KCG succeeded his grandfather in his twenties and is now the longest reigning monarch in Swedish royal history. Now he's coming to the coronation of a peer who has been waiting seventy years to ascend to the throne.

The day begins with a Te Deum with the Royal Family and guests at the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace; the King will later oversee the Changing of the Guard in the Outer Courtyard, and the Royal Family will appear on the balcony.

There will be a tribute to the King from singers and the Royal Academy of Music in the Outer Courtyard while the royals look on from the new balcony.

An anniversary banquet will be held in the Rikssalen of Stockholm Palace in the evening.

The last day of celebrations will be 16 September, when the King and Queen will travel in a horse-drawn carriage through Stockholm. The Royal Family will also be guests of honour at Norrbro when the city of Stockholm celebrates the jubilee.

Guests at the jubilee have not yet been announced, and further details on the Golden Jubilee will be revealed in due course.

The Danish court confirms that the following members of their family will be in attendance: Queen Margrethe, the Crown Prince couple and Queen Anne Marie of Greece.

QMI and QAM are first cousins to King Carl XVI Gustav. Their sister Princess Benedikte will not be attending as she will be appointed as the Regent during the absence of QMI and CPF.

Maybe it?s just me but we seem to have been reading about King CG?s Jubilee for months now and it?s still not over.

I?m glad to hear that. Something seemed to be reported every week! God forbid that the King come down with a case of the flu next week.

Mind you, several Aussies have said the same to me (about the constant ceremonial and  the different ceremonies in Britain over the last twelve months.)
