Glad to see the masks. Side eye at the temp checks - totally useless for monitoring COVID. I have been mildly concerned about Leonor looking much younger and less developed for her age but I think she may be catching up - finally
So yesterday was the first day for Leonor. Sofia's class will begin on Friday. Letizia was not there because families were limited to one parent doing the school drop off.

A classmate of Leonor's has tested positive for COVID 19 so as a precaution, all of the students in the class are to be quarantined at home for the next 14 days.
No surprised. And when they get back, it will wash, rinse, repeat.....

Of course it needs to be done but is still very frustrating for everyone when pupils have newly returned for the Autumn term.

I agree. In California only some of the private schools and a small number of public elementary schools have been allowed to reopen for in person instruction. Los Angeles county elementary schools might be able to reopen in November but then again it might not be for very long.
The largest public university system in the nation ( Calif. State University) just announced that the 2021 spring term will be entirely online. My son's community college sent a similar notice on Thursday so he won't set foot on campus for classes this entire school year.

United World Colleges is a global education movement focused on using learning as a way of bringing people together. Princess Elisabeth of Belgium was a student at the college in Wales between 2018 and 2020.
The Netherland's King Willem-Alexander is also a graduate of this school.

Hope Leonor (growing up fast) thoroughly enjoys herself there. Elizabeth of Brabant seemed to. I wish the BRF would also choose a high ranking European boarding school for its teens. It's ridiculous for any Royal to not have fluency in a couple of European languages (or at least French) in this day and age.
And how anyone, even TV journalists can correlate an aged scandal ridden ex monarch who fled abroad due to his ill gotten gains, with a schoolgirl who is completing her education abroad, is beyond me and I suspect most others.

IMO her parents are doing an excellent job in preparing Leonor. Spain's constitution limits the number of members in the Casa Real to the monarch/consort/ (former monarch/consort/heir/spouse and siblings, with that just leaves Queen Sofia as the only other adult that can assist Felipe and Letizia now. While Leonor obviously needs to completer her education, she might be taking on royal duties at a younger age than most of her peers.
As TLLK knows, I have had concerns about Leonor - she seemed to be maturing so much slower than normal. But I am starting to be less concerned lately and this outing sound great for her.

With Leonor heading to Atlantic College this fall, it makes sense that she's involved in more of these appearances before she departs.
Of Europe's young teen/adult heirs it seems to me that Belgium and Spain have been the front runners in having their young heirs involved in learning the public side of their future role.

As important as a boat christening might be. I find them planting trees with other young people their age, a bit more age appropriate right now.

Military service is a lot of money, time and man power. All which is better spent on someone who is actually looking to serve in the military (not in a ceremonial role but actual active duty). And this should go for both genders, male and female.
What Elisabeth did (which is a normal program offered to anyone) or the modified training Victoria did are both good option for people who were never actually going to serve.
Agreed. It does make sense to have the heir prepared to undertake some military training if he/she is going to be the future Commander-in-Chief.
I also agree. It is very important she is viewed as competent in military matters.
Leonor seems to be a very gentle, soft individual. Doing military training may help her with confidence and give her more authority. Spain is a macho culture and she is going to need to be strong as a woman leader.

The students are housed in accommodation blocks elsewhere, but the castle does look lovely. Apparently the school was begun by Kurt Hahn of Gordonstoun fame, in 1963, when he must have been quite old.
The only caveat I?d put here is that it is probably quite cold in the winter with the winds from the sea whipping through and Wales is one of the rainiest places in Britain. Too cold for me. I?d rather have a castle in Italy! But I agree, St Donat?s looks beautiful.

I imagine that the kids from warmer climates, like Leonor, will have some adjusting to do. Being Canadian and owning a
-40C rated parka, I would be ok. As long as those fireplaces are working.

Yes, Felipe, Leti, Leonor and Sofia have always been a very close foursome and although I?m sure Sofia has many school friends it?s inevitable that she?ll miss her sister a lot. However Leonor will be home for Xmas so not too long to wait.

The Princess of Asturias Awards will take place October 22. It is expected that, as has been the case since 2019, Princess Leonor will preside over the ceremony with her parents and participate in the events with the winners.

Great to see her. Hopefully though she isnt missing much at school. I appreciate the need for her to be seen still, but at her age the focus, heir or not, should be on schooling.

@TudorQueen for the links. I would imagine that Atlantic College will be willing to make the occasional accommodation for their who are in a unique situation like Leonor. Plus as we've discovered during the pandemic, distance learning can still take place. After all with modern technology Leonor can keep in contact with her instructors and have access to her assignments while she's on a short break.
@TLLK That is true but there is more to the school experience then the books. Especially when she is at boarding school. The social interaction, activities and so on. One thing we have indeed learned with covid, while yes distance learning is possible, the social interaction for kids was a huge factor missing. A lot of kids have suffered emotionally during covid due to isolation.
Thankfully Leonor will be back at school after a break. But sending her to Wales is a chance for her to be a normal kid for once and not the future queen of her peers. While she understands her duties, there is likely part of her wondering what her friends at school are doing after class, or this weekend, when she is home on duty.
Lovely photos of Felipe, Leti and the girls together. How tall are both Leonor and Sofia! Maybe they have inherited Felipe?s height? I can imagine that Leonor is a quiet achiever and diligent student. I don?t think her education will suffer at all from the break.

I agree that there's more to the experience and that COVID has had an impact on education. Distance learning is not the optimal situation. However for a short period of time, such as her visit home for the Princess of Asturias awards, I believe that it won't have too much of a negative impact upon her school work or relationships with her new classmates.
The Princess of Asturias will end her classes on April 14 and then return to Spain for her term break. She has at least one public event while she's on her break. Traditionally the SRF spends Easter on the island of Mallorca and attends Easter Sunday Mass together. The last time they were able to do this was in 2019.

The sisters at a Princess of Girona Foundation event yesterday. The title Prince/Princess of Girona is one of the heir to the throne's historic titles. I expect to see the Spanish court pairing them both for upcoming events as it's good experience for both. In the future, Sofia will be able to still be a working member of the family during her father's reign but according to Spain's constitution as her aunts Elena and Cristina did however this will end when Leonor's begins.

I wonder whether the danger to any of the younger Dutch royals has now receded so that at least the two older sisters will be able to go out and about with their school friends in the same way. I noted that Izzy of Denmark was outside on a walk with no security at all that could be seen. Some other royals would be envious.

Yes, Queen Leti looked quite emotional. What an adventure, though! Like her father, one year in the infantry, the second training in the Navy, then a third learning to fly. And after that University, probably Spain then elsewhere for her master?s. Leonor has her life set until her mid twenties.
With Sofia heading to Wales very soon, the couple will be "empty nesters" for the next few years. At least Leonor will be in Spain and not too far away from Madrid. Also there will be events where parents can attend for both of their girls.
I wish Princess Leonor the best. This is a huge adventure, and three years a quite a long time.

Autumn and winter in rainy Wales. Brrrrh! However, every young royal at the College so far seems to have enjoyed their stay, so it must have a very good atmosphere. Hopefully Sofia will like it too.
