During his visit, the 29-year-old Duke of Cambridge met with BBC’s Kate Silverton and fed a 5-year-old black rhino named Zawadi. She’s one of three rhinos that have since been relocated to the wild in Tanzania.
William, a patron of wildlife conservation group Tusk Trust, is a dedicated campaigner against poaching.

QuotePRINCE William and Prince Charles met global conservation leaders at London Zoo today to discuss how drones and other new technology can help end wildlife poaching.

William, 31, is determined to use part of his transitional year between leaving the RAF and starting a new, as yet undefined, role in public service in working to help the illegal trade in wildlife that is threatening species such as tigers, elephants, and rhino with extinction.

He has become president of United for Wildlife, a new alliance of seven leading conservation bodies working to end poaching.

The Duke of Cambridge yesterday called on the world to halt Africa's "poaching epidemic" after he joined Labour leader Ed Miliband in becoming the latest public figures to back The Independent on Sunday's Christmas appeal.

The campaign, with support from our sister newspapers The Independent, the i paper and the Evening Standard, is raising funds to combat the illegal ivory trade presently killing around 100 elephants a day.

Prince William recently established United for Wildlife, an alliance of seven leading conservation bodies, to try to end poaching. He has previously warned that the "catastrophe" facing rhinos and other species could make them extinct within our lifetime.

Royalty, environment a natural partnership

QuoteThe numerous partnerships between royal patrons and organizations devoted to the protection of the natural world demonstrate the unique perspective that royalty brings to the table in the 21st century.

Since Prince William and his fellow members of the world's royal houses do not have to face a four-or five-year election cycle, they are free to focus his energies on long-term causes where progress occurs over the course of decades rather than months or years. Representatives of world's monarchies have a vested interest in ensuring the long-term survival of the planet as they envision their descendants in their positions for centuries to come.

An interesting article from last year discussing William's involvement in United for Wildlife and how it is a natural fit for royals to be involved in environmental conservation.

Thanks for the article Macrobug.I agree with Harris that royalty can use their influence to bring attention to different causes and this is what we see happening with the need to end the illegal wildlife trade.
