The then Hereditary Grand Duke Henri married Maria Teresa in a civil ceremony at the Grand Ducal Palace on 14 February before heading to the church for a religious ceremony. They said their vows at Notre Dame Cathedral with their families, foreign royals and government officials in the cathedral while thousands of others watched on television or in the streets.

Maria Teresa wore a custom Balmain gown and her new mother-in-law, Grand Duchess Jos?phine-Charlotte, loaned Maria Teresa her Belgian Congo Diamond Necklace Tiara to wear. Henri wore his black military uniform with the Order of the Gold Lion orange sash. The Archbishop of Luxembourg, Jean Hengen, officiated the Roman Catholic ceremony.

The couple went on to have five children: Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg (born 1981), Prince F?lix (born 1984), Prince Louis (born 1986), Princess Alexandra (born 1991) and Prince S?bastien (born 1992). They also have five grandchildren.

This year marks 40 years since the current Grand Duke Henri wed Cuban-born Maria Teresa Mestre y Batista on Valentine?s Day. To celebrate their ruby anniversary, we are taking a look back at their wedding on this day in 1981.

On the evening of 13 February, a gala dinner was held at the Government Palace for 110 guests; everyone sat at a U-shaped table to toast to the happy couple for the simple dinner.

The couple did not choose Valentine?s Day on purpose as they did not realise they had chosen their wedding to be on the romantic holiday; Valentine?s Day was not widely celebrated in Luxembourg at the time.

For the ceremony, Maria Teresa chose a bespoke gown by the French house Balmain. The white silk, intricately patterned dress featured a fitted bodice and bell skirt. Her sleeves had white fur around the wrists ? matching the white fur around her neck and the bottom of the skirt.

As with many royal wedding dresses, the gown featured a train; Maria Teresa?s had a portion beginning from her shoulders in a cape-like fashion. Its length of two metres was equal with the lace veil.

The future Grand Duchess also wore the Congo Diamond Tiara ? the same tiara that Henri?s mother wore when she married in 1953. The tiara had been a gift to the Belgian-born Princess Jos?phine-Charlotte from the Belgian Congo, which was a colony of Belgium at the time.

Luxembourg?s Princess Alexandra leaves her 20s behind today and celebrates her 30th birthday.

The Princess is the only daughter and fourth child of reigning Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. She was born on 16 February 1991 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. She has four brothers: Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg (b. 1981), Prince F?lix (b. 1984), Prince Louis (b. 1986), and Prince S?bastien (b. 1992).

When she was born, she was excluded from the line of succession to the Luxembourg throne. However, in 2011, that changed when Luxembourg adopted absolute primogeniture. Her Royal Highness is fifth in line to the throne after her brother, Prince Louis gave up his succession rights, as well as those of his children, upon his marriage to Princess Tessy.

Hereditary Grand Duchess St?phanie is celebrating her 37th birthday today, and the Grand Ducal Court shared new images of the Hereditary Grand Duchess with her son, Prince Charles.

Four new photos were released that were taken by Sophie Margue at the family?s home at Fischbach Castle.

In her new biography on the Grand Ducal Court?s website, her new role as a mother is highlighted with the Court saying: ?Princess St?phanie has fully embraced motherhood since the birth of Prince Charles. She enjoys making new family memories together while ensuring her son grows up with the values of family and respect that she shares with Prince Guillaume.?

Happy birthday Stephanie! Several very sweet photos of Stephanie of Luxembourg and her baby Charles, who is now quite the big boy. He has made such a difference to his parents' lives! I hope they have one more child though, twice the fun!

As he turns 40, how is Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg preparing to become sovereign? ? Royal Central

On 18 December 2000, 19-year-old Prince Guillaume got his moment in the spotlight when he got sworn in as Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

Since then, His Royal Highness has been preparing for his duties as sovereign of the small Grand Duchy in central Europe.

Like most heads of state around the world, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg is also the Chief of the Armed Forces. In preparation for this task, Prince Guillaume trained at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, in Surrey, England, from September 2001 to August 2002. He returned to the United Kingdom in 2018-2019, when he was in a class of post-university studies at Royal College of Defense Studies in London.

His university education in political science and international relations, obtained both in the United Kingdom and in France, is also an essential element of his preparation for his duties as the future head of state, as he will be in charge of leading state and official visits to and from Luxembourg, aimed at strengthening the country?s position in the geopolitical balance, at least in Europe, and to create bilateral relationships to highlight the country?s excellences.

Since his swearing as heir, Prince Guillaume has also undertaken numerous foreign trips to promote Luxembourg around the world and establish a presence for the country within the biggest international organisations. One of his first foreign trips was in New York City with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to attend the Millennium Conference. Held in 2005 in the United Nation?s headquarters, the meeting was aimed at finding solutions to eradicate extreme poverty around the world, something that His Royal Highness has long held dear since. Within Luxembourg, Prince Guillaume is the patron of a number of councils and boards that promote excellence within the country; His Royal Highness is particularly interested in creating a collaborative work environment where different sectors can work together to achieve one common goal. A good example of this is his effort to end homelessness by providing affordable housing or accessible housing for people with disabilities; he has put together members from boards of building firms, organisations that work with the vulnerable and state actors to make it happen.

But the most high profile piece of his preparation puzzle comes in the form of official state duties. Since his swearing-in as Hereditary Grand Duke, Prince Guillaume has attended an increasing number of official functions with Grand Duke Henri, including State Council meetings, New Year diplomatic audiences and a good number of state and official visits.

His 40th birthday marks the beginning of a new chapter, during which he will not only have to keep learning how to best perform his duties as head of state, but he also has to pass that knowledge onto his son, who, one day, will also inherit the responsibilities his father and grandfathers have. He will have to step more and more into the spotlight as his role becomes more consolidated and prominent, always with the support of his wife, who has taken her own share of representation work ever since the two got married in 2012.
