In the 1590s, Somerset landowner Sir Edward Phelps began building Montacute House from beautiful honey-colored limestone quarried at nearby Ham Hill.
Sir Edward wanted a house grand enough to match his position. He was a leading lawyer and politician in London. He was an MP in 1584.
