In the late 17th century, Frenchman Jean Tijou added splendid wrought-iron gates to the principal gatehouse of Burghley House.   
In the mid-18th century, the 9th Earl of Exeter, Brownlow Cecil, commissioned Lancelot Brown to landscape the 300 acre park.
