Title: The Monegasque Family General News and Chat
Post by: TLLK on July 20, 2020, 05:25:46 PM
A thread to discuss the Monegasque Royal Family's news and articles not related to royal duties.

Prince Albert?s daughter diagnosed with COVID-19 ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/monaco/prince-alberts-daughter-diagnosed-with-covid-19-146030/)

QuoteIn the video, she says that she received the diagnosis three days ago but was not shocked by it as she had been experiencing symptoms for over a week. She explains that she had been social distancing, only going out for groceries and wearing a mask. She added that she had a scratchy throat and felt ?off? and developed a high fever. She also states that she is now feeling okay and doing a lot better. She says, ?I think the worst is behind me.?

Jazmin is the eldest daughter of the reigning Prince of Monaco but she is not in the line of succession as her parents were not married at the time of her birth. She has a younger half-brother who is also illegitimate, Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste, and two younger half-siblings Princess Gabriella, Countess of Carlad?s, and Jacques, Hereditary Prince of Monaco, who are in the line of succession.

Prince Albert was diagnosed with the same illness in March but he was out of danger by early April and able to come out of isolation.

Royal Year in Review: Monaco ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/monaco/royal-year-in-review-monaco-154061/) :snowflake: Like with many royal families their activities were reduced due to COVID. Prince Albert was the first monarch to test positive for the virus. Coincidentally the UK's PoW was at the same event and later was diagnosed with COVID.

Quoteecause of the pandemic, the Princely Family of Monaco was not overly active in 2020. Here we take a look at some of their engagements in 2020:

Prince Albert tells Monaco ?we will overcome this ordeal? ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/monaco/prince-albert-tells-monaco-we-will-overcome-this-ordeal-154274/)

QuotePrince Albert II of Monaco has used his traditional New Year?s Eve message to speak of his hope for the future and his determination to lead his nation towards better times.

Speaking in French, the Sovereign Prince looked back on a year he believed would ??remain etched in our memories, marked by doubt, fear and pain as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has spread across our planet?.

Albert, who contracted coronavirus in March but who has since made a full recovery, said ?the damage wrought by this epidemic goes further than the health situation. Every sector has been weakened, and the effects will last several years.? He went on ?this health crisis has turned our routines and everything we know upside down. It has forced us to draw on all our intelligence, to think carefully about every aspect of our existence. We must not stifle that process. On the contrary, we must amplify it. The vitality and resilience of our minds and spirits are crucial at the moment when we are most  in need of light, warmth and diversion, to ensure we are not overwhelmed by discouragement.?

Monaco's Princess Charlene doesn't care what you think about her buzzcut.

The royal is opening up about her dramatic new "half-hawk" haircut in a new interview on Wednesday with French magazine, Point de Vue, saying that was her "decision." And that once the shock wore off, her husband Prince Albert has grown to like it!

Charlene, who turns 43 on Monday, debuted her new look on December 16 at the Palace's annual Christmas party. Asked whether as a public figure she has found a way of dealing with the criticism that followed, she launched into a quick defense.

"This haircut was my decision," she responded. "It seems that it has provoked all kinds of comments. But it turns out that I wanted it for a long time, the style pleases me. That's all."

Why should Charlene care about others' opinion of her haircut? Does she burst out on Twitter etc with criticisms of courtiers and observations on ordinary people's clothing and hair she sees on the street? Of course not, and IMO far too many people burst forth daily with diatribes about others when really none of it is their damn business. Charlene has always been quite edgy in her fashion choices, and if she likes her haircut (and she says she does,) then perhaps critics could take note and just shut up.

The haircut is very trendy and extreme for a woman her age, its more of a teenage style around here. I'm not sure if that's the case in Europe. She looks pretty with it.

Well finally the Palace in Monaco has jumped into gear with the speed of a lame tortoise, or rather Princess Charlene has issued her own statement about why she hasn?t been back to Monaco for months after her looong stay in SA working with her wildlife Foundation. And why she will unfortunately miss her forthcoming  tenth wedding anniversary to Prince Albert.

Charlene has unfortunately contracted an ear, nose and throat infection that has required multiple procedures in the months she?s been away in her home country. She issued a statement explaining why she has been in Monaco only once since January by disclosing this condition which requires her to stay put in SA for now. It appears more operations may be necessary.

Twitter and gossip sites have been aflame with theories about why she hasn?t been seen in Monaco for months and so this statement may quell the rumours for now. Albert and the children visited her in South Africa in May, and are likely to visit again soon.

I think that was the once since January trip I mentioned. I can?t help thinking Palace PR or hers hasn?t been handling this particularly well. If Charlenr has had such a severe condition for a while why issue photos of her smiling away on various occasions in SA this year and why hasn?t news of this serious ear, nose and throat condition been mentioned before now? Why wait until keyboard warriors start rumours? Anyway, it looks as if the already postponed  ten year anniversary celebrations are going to be long distance ones.

All very odd IMO.  I do wonder about them.  Did she get some infection after Easter?  How long has she been in SA?  Seems like a long time...and Albert is out and about all the time lately with the kids.  If she's gotten fed up iwth Monaco, the trouble is that she can't really just live outside it as she appears to prefer SA.  And that's a long way for a ruler like Albert to travel....plus even if he did wnat to abdicate their son is way too young to take over.

She can take a private jet to the Principality of Monaco, where her husband is the ''head'' of state. It's not like there is somebody above him in that decision or that his people would be against it. It's to date since the start of the pandemic, one of the most free places in planet earth, like if nothing has happened C19.
Title: Re: Charlene?s illness

I don?t think it will get to abdication. And if we are talking about people being fed up with a country we?ve only got to look at MT of Luxembourg who spends half of her life in Biarritz since she fell foul of the Luxembourg Court.Though at least Henri and MT are close.

I really don?t know what to make of Albert and Charlene?s marriage. Did they come to some sort of arrangement after the wedding at which she constantly cried? And they weren?t tears of happiness! If she intends to stay on in SA what is going to happen about the twins. I know they are seen a lot with their father and Monaco is their home but surely Charlene intends to return some time this year, health permitting of course.

That may be so, but speaking as someone whose ears pop whenever I?m on a plane I?m not sure that someone with a serious ear condition should be travelling on jets. And if the marriage has hit a trough Charlene might not want to return to Monaco any time soon, whatever the freedoms of the place.

I think with Maria Teresa it is more that she's not popular in Lux, and is living outside it most of the time..  But Henri is able to visit her, she's not that far away and maybe, he plans to abdicate in due course and retire with his wife.  but Albert is younger and his children are only kids.. no way can Jacques take over.
I remember the wedding and it did seem odd... and she has never been a very active princess.  But possibly she and Albert have gotten on OK as a couple... just she does not like MOnaco OR perhaps France either.  That's where the problem is... Mabye she put up  with it for some years and lately has become more fed up.. and is missing S Africa.  But she can hardly take the children, and they're not really close enough to see them as often as she would presumably like....

What I found strange about Albert and Charlene?s union was the honeymoon spent in separate hotels. Albert said it was ?for practical reasons?. What!! Still I suppose it will all work it?s way out somehow, given time.

I think she does have some health problems, and she can harldy fly if this ear infection hasn't cleared up.  But I think that there's more to it than that.  Albert seems to be out doing engagements a LOT wiht the kids.. and Charlene seems IMO to have become homesick for her native Land and perhaps does not want to go on living in Monaco..Grace spent a lot of time in Paris... but that's not that far away....

Yes, there?s a great difference between a wide brown land like South Africa and the tiny and cramped Monaco, beautiful though some views of it are. And Charlene was brought up in an informal type family atmosphere as well. She?s an outdoors and sporty type of gal who obviously loves animals.

However, Grace suffered from homesickness for the US and specifically for Hollywood and her friends there + acting career etc. She didn?t bolt back when her children were small and spend months in LA. Her marriage was certainly no idyll but to me there was more of a bond between Rainier and Grace than the relationship between Albert and Charlene. They?re cordial enough with each other, in public anyway, but whether what they have together is enough to sustain a life long marriage is debatable. Anyway, time will tell!

He is not the head of state of France. And the nearest airport for her to fly into is in Nice.

And no you don't fly when you have an ear infection. Any doctor would tell you that. Flying is hard enough on your ears when you are healthy. If you are having issues you can cause major damage flying.

Which is what several posters here, including myself, pointed out in former posts when you suggested that she could fly back whenever she liked as her husband was the ruler of Monaco.

But those are 2 separate issues.  Could she fly back?  Unless she had Covid, or had been in contact with someone who had Covid, I assume she could fly into Nice and come back to Monaco...and self quarantine..(Unless travel between SA and France is barred which I presume it isn't).

obviously given that she is supposed to have some ear infecton, it would not be wise medically for her to fly.  But its a bit vague. She has been in S Af for a few months.  They didn't mention that she was ill and needing surgery until very late in the day when it was obvious she was going to miss their 10th Wedding anniversary.

This is my original post which began this latest little spurt of discussion about Charlene and her health on this forum. The first and second paragraphs talk about serious ear, nose and throat infections which will  prevent her from returning to Monaco in the near future to celebrate her 10th wedding anniversary.

Blind Freddie (as we say here in Australia) would know that anybody with developing serious conditions to do with the ears would not fly on a plane anywhere.

Wannabie then joined the conversation by stating that Charlene?s husband was a Head of State and that therefore Charlene could fly anywhere she wanted. That missed the entire point of the previous posts by others which were discussing the health conditions that had just been announced.

As was stated by Tudor Queen and others including you and me, if a person has an ear problem requiring hospital procedures it doesn?t matter if the person?s husband is Emperor of the Universe, they don?t fly.

I agree... but Im a bit sceptical about the illness.  It may just be the Monaco way but they took a long time to say she was ill and then longer (As far as I recollect) to say that she needed surgery and that it would all take ages... Only I think when there had been discussion and stuff on social media for a few months noting Charlene's long absence...

The French and Monaco media are now publishing articles of imminent divorce, she was seen in Johannesburg looking to purchase a home, unnamed courtiers saying she has no intentions of coming back, unnamed close friend of the palace saying her medical condition excuse is wearing very thin. WOW.

Basically the most famous 2 people that have been for years taking pictures and royal reporter of the Monaco Royal family are implying:

1. Dec 2020 Charlene finds out Albert has another baby with a Brazilian
2. Dec 2020 She shaves her head practically entirely, punk look
3. Jan to Feb 2021 the unnamed sources says she has terrible mood swings
4. She leaves to SA and gets a ear infection. The excuse is wearing thin.

Lots of rumours lots of gossip in magazines. As of now however, both Charlene and the Palace at Monaco are following the Party line of ?Nothing untoward is happening, everybody move along? with the story that Charlene is going to return to Monaco at the end of October, her health restored.

Time, as always, will unveil the truth of the situation. At best all this speculation is baseless and this couple/family will continue living as they have for the past five or so years, in semi-detached fashion. At worst there will be a presumably discreet divorce and all sorts of stories will erupt.

Charlene is at the very least likely to return to Monaco at some time, if only to see her children. Jacques is heir to the Principality. He can?t be brought up on another Continent.

If she goes back to S Africa, she'll have to leave her children.. so it seems an insoluble problem.  I think there are definitely issues.. whether between the 2 of them or because Charlene dislikes Monaco and being a princess.. I dont think she'd be away so long due to illness.

How long has Charlene been separated from her children? Leaving six-year-olds with a nanny for months on end, the mother may be very ill, is never a good idea. It is better for the children to be around the mother even if she is ill. I am not sure I understand the decision-making that has been a part of Carlene's illness. This estrangement/separation may be a combination of a legitimate illness and other marital issues. We will find out eventually.

I think she's been away since about March..  I assume she was meant to come home within a  few weeks but this illness has gone on and on. However, given that they're very rich, I would have imagined the kids could have gone and stayed with her for long weekends at least.  At their age i dont think it matters if they miss a bit of school...

Well assuming that they are telling the truth, she is having a lot of ENT infections and pain, possibly partly due to the fact that she was a professional swimmer.. and perhaps she also flew a lot.  But she has been in SA now for several months, her children are in Monaco.. and there have been rumours about issues in her marriage or in her princess role for a long time...
but the Monaco court does tend to try to avoid giving out information and they usually have to say something in the end.  Given that Charlene missed her wedding anniversary with Albert, and that she has not been active as a Princess for most of her marriage, it isn't surprising that this long absence has made people wonder if their marriage is in trouble or if Charlene has just become fed up with life in Monaco...
And I do wonder if the children could not have been flown to SA to see her more often during this time.... True there's Covid but all the same they are probalby missing their mother and they are young enough that missing shcool isn't really that big an issue...

I think she's been away since about March..  I assume she was meant to come home within a  few weeks but this illness has gone on and on. However, given that they're very rich, I would have imagined the kids could have gone and stayed with her for long weekends at least.  At their age i dont think it matters if they miss a bit of school...
@Amabel2

I agree, having the children spend time with their mother is far more important at this age than school, a tutor or remote schools would be better. I can't imagine how the children are coping during this very long separation. They are only six years old.

I believe that her ENT problems are very serious but many mothers with severe health issues spend time with their very young children while sick.

I have no problem believing that Charlene has had several surgeries and is not well. However, according to the article below the hospital discharged her on Thursday, whereupon Charlene ?returned to the game lodge where she had been previously staying?. Now, while I admire her pluck and dedication to her wildlife causes, surely Charlene?s medical team wouldn?t be too happy about that.

The Lodge is over 150 miles away from Durban where she has just been treated and in a remote area. Hardly an ideal spot for someone recovering from a fainting spell after multiple ear surgeries, one would have thought, especially as she was flown to Durban for treatment after the last episode. In a plane? Some bits of this tale get stranger and stranger!

Well if Charlene was rushed to Durban hospital by ambulance after her fainting episode it must have been by air ambulance then, as she was reputedly staying in the game lodge 150 miles from Durban that has been her HQ for much of her stay in SA.

A ground ambulance would hardly be sent on a round trip of 300 miles to pick up a patient in a remote area of the bush, however important she was. Swifter by air as well. However, there is the ear problem with air travel.

Prince Albert has given an interview to People Magazine to address Princess Charlene's absence.

Prince Albert 'Appalled' at Princess Charlene Rumors, Denies 'Exile' | PEOPLE.com (https://people.com/royals/prince-albert-appalled-at-princess-charlene-rumors/)

QuoteAs Prince Albert awaits the return of his wife Princess Charlene to Monaco, His Serene Highness wants to set the record straight on rumors that have bubbled up in the midst of the Princess's extended stay in her native South Africa.

"She didn't leave Monaco in a huff!" Albert, 63, tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "She didn't leave because she was mad at me or at anybody else. She was going down to South Africa to reassess her Foundation's work down there and to take a little time off with her brother and some friends."

He continues, "It was only supposed to be a weeklong, 10-day maximum stay, and [she is still there now] because she had this infection all these medical complications arose."

Charlene, 43, traveled to South Africa in mid-May and soon began to experience complications related to a sinus lift and bone graft procedure she'd undergone prior to her arrival in preparation for dental implants. As result, she has since had several corrective procedures, including one in late June that caused her to miss her 10th wedding anniversary on July 1, and a four-hour long surgery on August 13.

Albert emphasizes, "She didn't go into exile. It was absolutely just a medical problem which had to be treated."

And Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella are now back to school this week.

Princess Charlene of Monaco misses out on her six-year-old twins' first day back at school | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9969051/Princess-Charlene-Monaco-misses-six-year-old-twins-day-school.html)

QuotePrincess Charlene of Monaco has sadly missed out on taking her six-year-old twins back to school as she remains in South Africa.

Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella returned to Fran?ois d?Assise-Nicolas Barr? (FANB), a private Catholic institution on Monday, according to the Monaco Tribune.

They were accompanied by their father Prince Albert, 63, while their mother remains in her native South Africa after being hospitalised due to complications from a 'severe ear, nose and throat infection' she contracted in May.

The former Olympic swimmer, 43, who has not been seen in Monaco since January, was reportedly discharged from hospital on Thursday and returned to the lodge where she has been staying these last several months after contracting the infection.

She is not expected to return to the principality until October after undergoing a 'four-hour operation under general anaesthesia' in August - although it was not made clear whether this was linked to the sinus infection.

Just read on another site that the twins are home-schooled at the Palace at Monaco with a few little friends as fellow students. If true, I think it?s rather an old fashioned way for royals to begin their early schooling. I know all Queen Elizabeth?s children started off with a governess at BP but that was 40 odd years ago.

An annus horribilis in Monaco? A difficult year for Albert and Charlene finally winds to an end ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/monaco/an-annus-horribilis-in-monaco-a-difficult-year-for-albert-and-charlene-finally-winds-to-an-end-169470/)

QuoteAs the year approaches its end, everyone takes a look back to evaluate successes and failures, happy and difficult moments and reflects on the events that have marked the times now gone. Royal families are now different. And for the small Principality of Monaco, 2021 was an undoubtedly difficult year, marked significantly by the prolonged absence of Princess Charlene which became worldwide news.

And yet, the year began on a positive note. Following the Sovereign Prince?s 2020 COVID-19 diagnosis, a vaccine was on the horizon, and it looked like the small principality was weathering the consequences of lockdowns and travel restrictions that deprived it of its main income: tourism.

But then, in May, Princess Charlene left for South Africa for a trip that was supposed to only last around ten days. She ended up remaining in the country where she grew up for six months. And in that time, speculation around her situation turned into global headlines.

Princess Charlene returns to Monaco ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/monaco/princess-charlene-returns-to-monaco-173825/)

QuotePrincess Charlene has returned to Monaco.

The Princess of Monaco reunited with her family in the principality earlier this week after undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness for several months outside of Monaco.

The Princely Palace released a statement on 12 March, saying: ?In agreement with her doctors and while her recovery is on the right track, their Serene Highnesses have agreed together that Princess Charlene can now continue her convalescence in the Principality with her husband and her children by her side.?

According to the Palace, she will need a few more weeks to continue her recovery before she can ?gradually resume her official activities.?

They concluded their message by requesting continued privacy for the family and said that Charlene ?still needs peace and calm, The Princely Couple, therefore, asks that their private life and family environment continue to be respected.?

Her return to Monaco comes three weeks after her husband, Prince Albert, revealed that Charlene was ?doing much better.?

Charlene probably feels claustrophobic in tiny Monaco which is terribly built up and prefers the broad horizons of SA. And yes she has always appeared stilted and uncomfortable in her role as the consort to the ruling Prince. However, surely there must have been serious and long conversations about that before the couple married?

It just seems to me to be more and more likely that, though the two got on well enough and were attracted to each other, Charlene at least did not appear to be deeply in love with Albert on their wedding day. And for much of the time since she seems to be rather uneasy when in his company.

I do suspect some kind of arrangement was actually, proposed by Albert before the wedding. Marry me, give me an heir, and stay by my side as consort for a number of years. In return there will be financial comfort for life, and a certain amount of time each year to yourself in Switzerland (where apparently Charlene has a house) and in SA.

If Prince Rainier III would have bypassed Prince Albert, would not Princess Caroline have become the reigning Sovereign Princess?
Or was Princess Caroline expected to renounce her claim like Hereditary Princess Charlotte did?
Would Andrea have been created a Prince before he ever succeeded?

I think that Rainier was very worried at the time that the Grimaldi name would die out as Albert was not married. Any children he had were very young, illegitimate and unlikely to be allowed to succeed.

It all appears to be speculation and we don't know what senior legal and constitutional authorities were consulted by this adviser at the time or how serious it all was. Certainly Monegasque royals had behaved in very unconventional ways in the past. It shouldn't be forgotten that Rainier's own mother, Hereditary Princess Charlotte, was legitimised, adopted and made an heir by his grandfather, who had no other children.

However, the Charlotte situation just after WW1 was probably unconstitutional and there were apparently grave doubts about its legality at the time. And that situation was very different to Rainier being able to actually set a legitimate heir (Albert) aside and placing his elder sister Caroline in his position. If he had wished to bring in equality among his heirs regardless of their gender then surely the obvious time to have done it would have been when Prss Grace was expecting their first child.

The situation in the 1990s would have been akin to Queen Elizabeth II telling Charles that she intended to set him aside as heir in favour of Andrew because his private life was endangering the House of Windsor. That wouldn't have happened in a million years and I don't think the proposals re Albert would have gone ahead anyway even if Rainier and Albert had hit a rough spot in their relationship and Rainier was closer to his elder daughter at the time. That personal situation was not uncommon in the Grimaldis anyway.

There would almost certainly have been legal challenges had Rainier attempted anything of the sort, imo, and as this is a DM concoction we don't know the background to these investigations. It may well have just been impatient moves by Rainier to forc3 Albert to get married and produce legitimate heirs, something that happened anyway, albeit many years later.
