A thread to discuss the news of the Dutch Royal Family not related to their official duties.
The Dutch Royal Family: King Willem Alexander, Queen Maxima, the Princess of Orange (Catherina-Amalia), Princess Alexia and Princess Arianne meet the press for the annual summer photosession in the gardens of Huis ten Bosch Palace. Huis ten Bosch is the recently rennovated official home of the Royal Family.

I loved that video of the Oranges! The girls are young women. Max looks great!
The AAA team is going to be as tall as their mother or even taller!
Happy to see the other monarchies around the world open.
A magazine has come under fire after it described the 16-year-old heir to the Dutch throne as plus-size on its front cover.
Princess Amalia, the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, is pictured alongside her mother on the most recent issue of Caras, a celebrity gossip and royal news magazine published in Spanish and Portuguese.
The photograph, one of several released this month by the Dutch royal family and not taken for the magazine, is published alongside a headline that, once translated, reads: Maximas oldest daughter proudly wears her plus-size look.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr......leave the kids alone. Don?t comment on anyone?s shape, size etc. Why cant they just say ?Stylish teen looks A-MAZING?
I'm very disappointed that the Argentine tabloid press made that comment about Amalia. <_< Apparently they don't recall what happened to CP Victoria of Sweden who developed anorexia nervosa after comments were made about her weight as a teen.
Exactly. Both of her parents are big people. She is a tall, curvy young lady that is beautiful. I understand she is a pretty good student. Let?s wait to see who she grows up to be. It?s hard enough being a teen without the world media being bullies.
I saw the cover and thought it was incredibly cruel especially for a teenager who is still discovering self and the world. How painful it must have been for her to see those words. Poor girl!
Thing is - I don?t think she actually would fit in plus size clothing. I doubt she is more than a size 14. We are so warped on what most people look like and what we see in the media. So much photoshop. And unrealistic expectations.
Gads, the pooooo tabloids, she is still growing and not an adult fully grown yet.....this is just evil idiots wanting to make clicks and money off this young girl......hope the family can put a stop to this even if it is a Spanish magazine. She really takes after her mom who is so beautiful.
The Cara team voting for this cover and words tells a story of themselves.
I know  Grrrrrrr

King Willem-Alexander ends holiday in Greece after criticism ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/king-willem-alexander-ends-holiday-in-greece-after-criticism-151261/)
QuoteKing Willem-Alexander and his family have ended their holiday in Greece only hours after landing amidst a storm of criticism.
The Dutch royals travelled to Athens on a government plane to begin their autumn break on Friday but when this became known to the wider public, it led to controversy. Just last Tuesday, the Netherlands went into a partial lockdown and people were advised not to travel abroad during the autumn break. The part of Greece the royals were travelling to is currently ?code yellow? and does not require a quarantine upon return to the Netherlands.
The King issued a statement saying, ?We will end our holiday. We have seen the responses of the people to the news in the media. They are intense and they affect us. There can be no doubt about it, to get COVID-19 under control it is necessary that the guidelines are followed. The discussion about our holiday does not contribute to that.?
The Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, was reportedly aware of the King?s holiday plans. Royal Reporter Kysia Hekster told NOS, ?This is huge dent for his image as a connector. Apparently, he did not think that this was not such a good idea and what it would project. He did not assess that very well.?
I would have thought W-A and Maxi would have worked out for themselves that some people would not be happy, actually. At least they have cut things short and now returned home. That should satisfy all who are aggrieved.

QuoteOur trip to Greece has provoked strong reactions from many Dutch people. It hurts to have betrayed your trust in us.
Even though the trip was in line with the regulations, it was very unwise not to take into account the impact of the new restrictions on our society.
Our own decision to return was made with the realization that we should not have gone.
From the start of the corona crisis, we have done our best - within the limits of the corona policy - to find space and to be there as much as possible for everyone who is looking for support in uncertain times.
It is a difficult time for everyone. A time of lack, limitations and worries. From fear, anger and insecurity too. We have heard the poignant stories in many encounters, in person and digitally. We feel connected with you and with all those people who have been directly or indirectly affected.
We will continue to work with you to get the corona virus under it. So that everyone in our country can then resume normal life as soon as possible.
That is now the most important thing and we will continue to do so, to the best of our ability.
We are involved. But not infallible.

What a PR mess, Friday travel ban government preaching to it's people, Sunday their royal family travels, Monday back home.
I'm hoping that the public apology will be the end of the discussion in the Netherlands regarding their travel.
Is traveling outside the country banned or was this a case of the king being held to a different or higher standard?
A bit of a mess, but overblown a bit. As is usual when it was found that the family had gone to sunny Greece the media made a fuss, carried on about 'ordinary people living under uncomfortable conditions while those who can afford it but should know better, swan off' etc. All the same it was probably not the best optics when you are rulers and some of your subjects are suffering economically. It was a very good penitent statement from W-A and Maxi IMO and should stifle any further debate.

It's not banned but citizens and residents are being asked to not travel outside of the country due to the rise in COVID 19 infections.
https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2020-10-16/dutch-king-cuts-short-vacation-in-greece-after-criticism
QuoteAMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander and his wife cut short a vacation to Greece on Friday after coming under criticism for travelling during the coronavirus pandemic.
"We see the reactions by people to reports in the media," Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima said in a statement published by the Royal House late on Friday.
"We wish to leave no doubt that it's necessary to follow the guidelines in order to get the COVID-19 virus under control. The discussion over our vacation is not contributing to that."
Though the king's vacation in Greece did not break any of the Netherlands' lockdown rules, including new restrictions introduced this week amid one of Europe's biggest coronavirus outbreaks, the government has discouraged unnecessary travel.
"This is unwise and incomprehensible," the ANP news agency quoted lawmaker Joost Sneller of the D-66 party, one of the coalition partners in Prime Minister Mark Rutte's governing coalition, as saying of the King's vacation.
Rutte had urged the nation in an televised address on Tuesday "not to test the boundaries of the rules."
"You can go on vacation, but then go to the place where you've booked your cottage or hotel room and don't move around," the prime minister said. "If you do go abroad -- well your options are limited as there are few countries that want to have us anymore."
Willem-Alexander, who has a private villa in southern Greece, travelled by government jet, ANP reported.
The Netherlands reported nearly 8,000 new coronavirus cases on Friday, a record.
Quite right, it's an ''advisory'' from their government to its people.
The real problem is as I am told by a countryman friend, this was the real timeline and events
Tuesday Government advisory to the nation
Sunday the Royals travel for pleasure to Greece in a Government Aircraft
Monday morning news hits the fan, midday royals back home
Friend says if the royals had taken a limited commercial flight, perhaps things would be just a bit different, 1. Not so angry if they'd taken a commercial flight and 2. remain angry with the government advisory and the royals flouting it. No. 1 may have probably drowned the outcry.

QuotePrincess Alexia of the Netherlands will follow in her father?s footsteps and is going to attend the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales after the summer. She is currently in the fourth year of the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet in The Hague, where her eldest sister the Princess of Orange and her younger sister Princess Ariane are also enrolled.
Princess Alexia will study for the International Baccalaureate ? a two-year program ? and she won?t be the only Princess there. It was recently announced that Leonor, Princess of Asturias and heir to the Spanish throne, would also be attending the same program after the summer. Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant and heir to the Belgian throne, graduated from the same program last year.
The educational years of the young Princess are considered to be private and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima request that the media continues to respect Princess Alexia?s private life.
Goodness, the UWC in Wales is becoming extremely popular with young heirs and others in European royalty. Elizabeth of Belgium and her parents must have spread the word! I know Willem-A attended also, but that was quite some time ago. It's probably an excellent chance to mix with a diverse bunch of students, experience a different curriculum and get in some more practice in English speaking and comprehension. Hopefully Alexia and Leonor will enjoy themselves there.

Yes especially when you consider that the previous generation (King W-A's) was dominate by boys! Now it's primarily girls.
Yes, but Queen Wilhelmina had one daughter, Juliana, who had only daughters herself. It was her oldest daughter Beatrix who had a surfeit of boys. Before her you have to go back to the mid 19th century and Wilhelmina?s father Wilhelm III to find sons, (three of them) by his first marriage, all of whom unfortunately predeceased him. So I think Beatrix?s offspring (W-A and his brothers) were an exception in the last hundred years or so of the NRH, not the rule, and the continuation of mainly Queen regnants looks as if it?s going to continue for the next reign at least!
Very nice grand children, so many girls. Only one boy in this generation.
UWC is very popular among the young royals. I bet its a stimulating environment.

Have they not been living there for two years now?
Great photos. You can see the definite personalities coming through in the girls and their clothing choices. I love they clearly have some freedom.
And yes like many of the other young royal heirs/spares they are shooting up in height compared to the last generation.
Month now and the dynamics will sure change. Amalia will start her gap year doing internships and travel. Alexia will be in Wales at boarding school. This summer is definitely ringing in big changes for them.
You're correct
@TudorQueen that the family has been residing at Huis ten Bosch for awhile now. For some reason I thought last year's session was cancelled, but they held it with safety precautions.

I agree that this historic carriage should not be used in the future considering its depictions of slavery. It can go into an exhibit at one of the palaces open to the public with an explanation of its history and the reasons why it was retired from the Royal Mews.
QuoteThe Dutch king, Willem-Alexander, has announced that he is mothballing ? at least for now ? the royal golden coach which has been embroiled in a racism controversy.
The opulent horse-drawn carriage, called De Gouden Koets, has traditionally transported the Dutch monarch to the opening of parliament and other state occasions, but has not been used since 2015.
At the centre of the slavery controversy is a picture on the left-side panel of the golden coach.
Called ?Tribute of the Colonies?, the image depicts kneeling black people handing over produce like cocoa and sugarcane to their white masters ? including to a young white woman on a throne representing the Netherlands.
Next to her, a young white man is seen giving a young black boy a book as he is presented by his subservient father, an image which painter Nicolaas van der Waay in 1896 said was meant to portray ?civilisation?.
?We cannot rewrite the past,? the Dutch king said an official video.
But ?we can try to accept it together. This also applies to the colonial past,? he added.
?The Gouden Koets can only be used when the Netherlands is ready for it. And that is not the case at the moment,? he continued.
There had been a mention that the panels could be replaced with plain ordinary panels. If this would occur, how expensive would it be to remove the original panels and replace them with the new ones?

QuoteThe Royal House of the Netherlands has announced new dates for King Willem-Alexander and Queen M?xima?s State Visit to Greece.
The visit has been postponed twice in the past year. Initially, the royals were supposed to be in Greece in late 2021, but the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic forced plans to be changed.
The visit was then supposed to occur in March, but the outbreak of the war in Ukraine prompted another last-minute postponement.
The RVD (Government Information Service) has announced that the King and Queen will travel to Greece between the 31st of October and the 2nd of November.
The visit will be carried out at the invitation of the Greek president, Ms Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and will focus on issues such as international cooperation (both countries are NATO members) and migrations.
The royal couple will visit Athens and Thessaloniki, the country?s second-largest city on the Thermaic Gulf and one of the biggest ports in Eastern Europe.
Further details of the visit?s schedule were not included in this latest press release and will be announced in due course.
This will probably be the first flight for King Willem-Alexander. He has recently had to renounce to the planned economic mission to the United States due to recovery from pneumonia that would be aggravated by aerial travel.
Queen M?xima is currently in northern California and will travel to Texas before going home; given her husband?s absence, she is now leading the delegation of state authorities and private business delegates travelling in the US.
Despite their geographic and cultural differences, the Netherlands and Greece share excellent diplomatic relations, which probably come partially from being two waterfront nations and therefore being at the forefront of maritime industries, such as commerce and energy production.
This will be the King and Queen?s first time back in Greece after the holiday they had to cut short in October 2020 due to mounting criticism for violating stay-at-home orders during the second wave of the pandemic.

Well done to Prss Alexia. She had some fun with her friends at the UWC but obviously worked hard too.
I'm guessing that her classmate in Spain has had similar news today?
It's the first day of school for Princess Ariane who is studying at Atlantic World College's campus in Italy.

In spite of Bernhard?s denials (lies) on the subject, it has been long suspected. And in fact a female biographer of his who conducted thorough research on his life, discussed this membership just before her book was published in 2010.
At the time of Bernhard and Juliana?s marriage, several members of his wedding party, including his best man, were denied entry into the Netherlands because of their membership of the Nazi Party. And Bernhard himself had been in the SS.

Yes I read that news today on TRF. There were rumors of his membership for decades which was more or less required of everyone in Germany during those years. I am not at all surprised that he was a party member.

Yes, certainly almost everyone was required to either have Party membership as adults or if young be a member of a Nazi Youth organisation. Even the former Pope had such a background. Even so, in some areas of Germany such as left wing Hamburg or deeply devout RC areas of Germany it was contentious and never made compulsory in the mid 1930s. And some German nobility, such as the Hesses of the Rhine family were quite clearly just nominal members.
However, it was NOT compulsory to join the SS, which Bernhard did, or hang around with keen members of the Party as he did as a young man.
Nazi membership card found of Dutch King?s grandfather ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/nazi-membership-card-found-of-dutch-kings-grandfather-193709/)
QuoteA membership card for the NSDAP (commonly known as the German Nazi Party) has been found belonging to King Willem-Alexander?s grandfather, Prince Bernhard.
The Government Information Service (RVD) confirmed the card?s existence but did not want to elaborate on the document.
The document was revealed by a former director of the Royal House Archives, Flip Maarschalkerweerd, who announced its existence in the newspaper NRC and his book De Achterblijvers. Media company NRS and NRC revealed scanned images of the membership card.
The NSDAP card was found in 2019 among Prince Bernhard?s private archives, which Maarschalkerweerd inventoried after the Prince?s death. It?s unknown why the historian waited four years to reveal it.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was troubled by the discovery but that he had been shown proof in the past that the late Prince was a member of the Nazi Party. He also said a government investigation into Prince Bernhard?s past with the Nazis was not necessary.
Rutte said the reveal of the card showed ?that this royal family is completely transparent? and that this was ?part of a mature monarchy.?
Rutte said he was constitutionally bound not to disclose when King Willem-Alexander found out or any of their conversations regarding the membership.
The German-born royal denied he was a member of the Nazi Party until his 2004 death. In an interview published by Volkskrant after his death, Prince Bernhard said: ?I can declare with my hand on the Bible: I was never a Nazi. I never paid for party membership, I never had a membership card.?The discovery by Maarschalkerweerd may not be a shock to the Dutch people as Bernhard had members of his family and friends aligned with the Nazis. He also met with Adolph Hitler before his wedding to the future Queen Juliana, as protocol dictated that the Prince should meet his head of state before his royal wedding.
However, Prince Bernhard was known to have fought against the Nazis during World War II and worked with the Allied War Planning Councils. He later called Hitler a tyrant and said the Third Reich would fall.

That should be fun. Of course there wasn?t much drama within Maxi and W-A?s actual relationship, once she found out who he was of course, lol. However I suppose the thing that was factious was Maxi?s father?s links to the Argentine military junta. He didn?t go to the couple?s wedding because of it, I seem to remember. But apart from that everything went pretty smoothly, especially as she proved eager to learn without suppressing her her exuberant nature!
