QuoteIt's June 1st and the beginning of a new month – this means it's time for a new picture from the King and Queen of Bhutan, but this month is just a little more special as it is the birthday month for Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, Queen Jetsun Pema. The elegant Bhutanese Queen will celebrate her 25th birthday on June 4th.

The photo shows a relaxed King and Queen sitting in a verdant landscape in Sakteng, which is a town in the Trashigang district of Eastern Bhutan, also known as the Jewel of the East. Trashigang has a special significance for Queen Jetsun Pema and her family, as her great grandfather Dzongpon Dopola was Governor of Trashigang.

QuoteBhutan's Dragon Queen Jetsun Pema turns 25

Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan, the Dragon Queen, celebrates turning one quarter of a century today, as it's her 25th birthday. Born as a commoner on this day in 1990, she might not have anticipated what her future held for her.

On May 20th 2011, the Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced, at the opening of parliament, that he was engaged to a young girl 10 years his junior, and that she would become Queen Consort later that same year.

It was of course Jetsun Pema, he was talking about, and on October 13th 2011, the couple was married in Bhutan's largest media event ever. The King even stated that he would never marry another woman, though Bhutan actually allows polygamy.
