The Royal Household were under budget this year by £400,000 and this goes into the reserve fund to be used in the future if needed.

^^Buckingham Palace is probably a real nightmare to maintain. It doesn't seem to have been built properly in the first place and it was extended several times. Queen Victoria was always moaning about it and nothing's changed, really.

It's a pity something more beautiful wasn't built after the Palace at Whitehall was extensively burned in the 17th century. I don't think Buckingham Palace is a patch on some European palaces.

PaulaB

For these criticising them spending their own money on this house have anything to say when apartment 2 at Buckingham palace had 300000 spent on it.  This was done so Beatrice could use it as student digs.

"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to your children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female'." ^^ The Cambridges are using theirs, and will be using it for many years to come.

They are not using KP until years to come... Until William reluctantly starts working full time as a royal.

Where are they living when in London?  KP, unless there's something I don't know. :P

They didn't need that big a place for three people to occasionally visit London, embarrassing waste/misuse of money.

True, no one needs a home that big.  No one really needs two homes.  But that's how the Royals live, and they are Royals.

Nope, they have chosen to be pilot and housewife postponing being royals full time so they should live as such.

They might be postponing Royal duties (and who knows the reason why), but they cannot postpone being Royals.  They just are.

It's time the acted like it and assumed the responsibilities befitting who they not who they wish they had been, they are in their thirties and should be grown up by now...

I agree. They are privy to information and HM's wishes. We are not. They're already doing royal duties which includes the one that happens tomorrow. KP is intended to be their home until William's reign begins.

I find that architects and interiors always have to work together to create a space from scratch but when you're doing renovation or working with the core and shell... it's all interiors!

they spent 6 Mil on interior design and now kate wont be full time for the next 20 yrs or so ,then she will retire from her vacation  :Lothwen: .......

Canuck

The money spent on KP, as has been reported numerous times, principally involved asbestos removal, redoing electrical and plumbing work that was out of date, updating security systems, etc.  You may think that in any event it was too much money spent on the renovation, but it is just not true that they spent 6 million on interior design.

The three items you mention is actually in the audited annual report 2014. In the sense, it will also appear as is for end of the year July 2015. Their private residence, some security fixtures will be paid by the crown, just like Anne's Gatcombe was paid 1970s. How do I know, the SG was prepaid, Her Majesty had a bumper year, + excess of 6M, very likely because of the Jubilee 2012.

They are multi-millionaires and that is how they live. Whether it be Brad and Angie or George Clooney or the royals. In the meantime I have medical bills and student loans and my car is about to give out. Not fair but it is reality.

I do envy Kate having access to those beautiful old estates. I never understood why Diana was so miserable on family vacations. She could have toured Scotland and all the other historical places. I would have been all over the place.

Rich folks are just different from you and I.

The Dutch government is going to doing the same to Palace Huis ten Bosch in order to prepare it for W-A, Maxima and the AAA team now that Beatrix has returned to her original home of Drakestyn. Asbestos removal is going to drive up the costs and extend the time-frame for the renovation work.

We have been rounds about this.

Not being critical of anyone...just bringing it back to the center.

These are not homes.  they are estates. they are old, 100  is  very new, LOL,to  200   or so estates to 500 -600  year old  and older palaces/castles.

PW  is heir. He is not  like  Zara, MP, Bea and Eug,and the two minor kids.
Marriage and the baby, cahnged his status. He  needs  to have the family  type  estates and  palaces set aside for him since  brith and  since  what  century? Pick a  century!!!

KP apt. A. Hall.
KP for then they  are in London. AH  for when they want to be there. They have chosen  AH as their main family residence.
When QEII dies,  PW gets  Birkhall. PC gets Balmoral.  PH might get Highhgrove or maybe  King Charles and  Queen Camilla will give Highgrove to her  son. YES, I said that!!!!   PH will have  a  bigger palce  at KP  or  the biggest at ST.JP . Queen Camilla's daughter will have  have  perhaps, Camilla's house, and of  The will be Lady Lopes is  heir with  via her husband to  his  family seat and titles.

Allof this  is move on down, move on down the line as  QE  dies and  Buck is for the King C and Q C. Sand, Bal,Wins, all for  KC and QC. CH for  PW and K. Maybe bigger place, KP1  for PH and family?

I am sure of that , how that works and  who gets  what but they get move on down, move on down the line.

What  will be interesting is  how PAndrew  will have to pay  for places ,estates for PE and family and PB and family . It  seems both girls  are  far  off from marriage and family, BUT it will happen one day.

It is all what it is and will be.

Well, Dave isn't short of a few dollars and comes from a wealthy family. I'm sure he'll be able to afford a hut somewhere in the sun for himself and Beatrice. (According to one list I looked at Andrew is worth about $83 million and Edward around $46 million, enough to be able to provide for those long leases on Crown Estates the royals specialise in for their children.)

Interior designer for Prince William and Kate Middleton opens up his home.

It was reported earlier this year that the couple had entrusted him with the renovation of their country house, Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom Georgian on Sandringham estate, the Queen's retreat in Norfolk. With Pentreath's love of classical architecture and his sympathetic treatment of old country houses, combined with a dash of contemporary quirkiness, he seemed the perfect fit for this young pair eager to make their mark on the property. When pressed for details, Pentreath remains tight-lipped, conceding only that they are "extremely knowledgeable and are leading the project every step of the way." (The duchess seems to be very hands on, as she's been photographed sourcing furniture, fireplaces and fabrics.)

Will the mansion tax also apply to AH?  Private residence and all?  And we keep being told to keep schtum about the money being spent on the refurb....because its a private residence.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me

TLLK

Answered this in the tax post, but yes it would as it is part of the Sandringham estate. Balmoral and its outlying buildings would be considered private property as well. Estimates put forth by the DM had the Cambridges paying approximately 10,000 pounds. Princess Royal would be paying around 60,000 pounds for Gatcombe Park. The vote was still out on Royal Lodge Windsor (Andrew) and Bagshot Park (Wessexes) as they are currently leased. Also unclear was Highgrove as it is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

All state owned properties were exempt.
