QuoteThe wind whistles along draughty corridors, plastic buckets are strategically placed to catch drips from leaky ceilings and the ancient boiler is making alarming noises.

Behind the magnificent façade of Buckingham Palace all is not well. A report published this week paints a grim picture of the state of disrepair of the Queen's main residence, while conditions are just as desperate at many of the nation's other royal buildings.

At Windsor Castle the roof has apparently been patched so often that a huge section the size of both Centre and Number 1 courts at Wimbledon is said to be beyond repair.

The monarch, it seems, is not immune from the worries the rest of us face at this time of year as the weather closes in and the flaws in our homes are exposed. But while most of us have just one roof to fret over, the Queen has 26 at Windsor Castle alone which are in urgent need of replacement.
