Title: Diana General Chat #2
Post by: LouisFerdinand on July 31, 2017, 01:24:40 AM
When was Diana's first lady-in-waiting assigned to her? When she became engaged to Prince Charles? Or after the wedding to Prince Charles?

Anne Beckwith-Smith was appointed as her first Lady in waiting a few months after the wedding.

Diana got along fine with Anne Beckwith Smith (who recently was on a documentary about Diana).

Would there have been controversy if both Princess Diana's sisters, Lady Sarah and Lady Jane had been appointed as Ladies-in-waiting?

They were busy with their families when Diana got married and her first years as Princess. They did accompany Diana on some appearances . In the meantime I found this:

Of course there would not have been controversy.  however since niehter of thtem were professional courtiers and were married with young children, it was certialy better that Diana had a helper who was experienced with court life and able to educate and assist her.  And it is probably best not to work with family though Diana did sometimes use her sisters as unoffiical ladies in waiting in later years.

Certainly Sarah was Diana's Lady in Waiting for some time. I remember her  being out on engagements with Diana. Both sisters had their children in the years 1980 to 1989, including when William and Harry were growing up. Two daughters each as well as a son. How Diana must have envied them! Charles Spencers offspring were a lot younger, though I can remember Kitty Spencer clubbing with Harry on a couple of occasions when she was in her late teens.

The brothers had quite an age range of cousins really, some a few years older, (the Phillips) some a bit younger (the Yorks and Sarah's younger daughter, the Earl's children) as well. Edward's children are very much younger.

I can't remember Jane being a L-I-W. Maybe it would have been considered a bit off for Jane to do it, considering her husband was Assistant Private Secretary to Her Maj for most of those years. Later on there seem to have been strains, due to Robert Fellowes' role during the time of the War of the Wales and then the divorce negotiations. Sarah was always rather sparky of course , and there may well have been times when she didn't want to serve as public handmaiden to her younger sister!

It was nice to see Diana spend time with her family from time to time with photos of Diana and the boys with the Spencers.

Yes @Curryong  I bet there were lots of high spirited convos between the two of them over the years on engagements. I recall one time they were going to just let Diana in to see someone ill, and she wanted Sarah in as well to lift the spirits.

I do like the pics of the three of them laughing in the back of a car, nice to see at least some laughs given the rocky road the three of them had over the years.

While I doubt she'd talk like her sister, it would be interesting to have Sarah interviewed on how she felt about her sister getting what her old beau (yes , yes other posters, i know, she was still upset over her breakup and wanting duke of Westminster, but im sure she thought once or twice about as she said SOMETHING LIKE I thought this would all be mine, she might not have wanted Charles, but his wealth???). Then as years passed, did she feel a bit of for the grace of god there go I, and/or be careful what you wish for, and if she did find herself in Dianas spot, how would she have handled Camilla, fiery or pragmatic?

It would be right up there with Interviewing Jane over being between Diana and Fellows during the worst of the Wales war.

If Princess Diana had either her sister Lady Sarah or Lady Jane be a lady-in-waiting, would the press have declared that Diana was not letting some other lady fill the position?

Not in those days. The media was much more deferential then than it is now, and the tabloids were love with Diana the majority of the time anyway. They wouldn't be jumping up and down about ladies in waiting, IMO.

just wasn't going to happen. Diana needed a professional woman to guide her.. not a married sister.. Sarah was volatile and Jane while she knew more about court life was busy with her young family.  I think it was much better that she had someone who was intelligent, familiar with royal life and capable of detachment

John Travolta: ?Dancing with Diana was one of the highlights of my life? ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/features/john-travolta-dancing-with-diana-was-one-of-the-highlights-of-my-life-139404/)

QuoteActor John Travolta has revealed that his favourite moment of the 1980s was when he danced with Princess Diana at the White House.

Speaking to Good Morning America back in 2016, Mr Travolta reflected on his moment with the Princess of Wales at a gala in 1985.

?That was one of the highlights of my life,? he told the interviewer. ?So that?s probably the best moment of the eighties.?

The Prince and Princess of Wales were on a visit to the United States in November 1985 when they attended a White House Gala on 11 November, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. First Lady Nancy Reagan urged Travolta to dance with Diana, stating that it was her wish to do so.

Mr Travolta was invited to the event, and danced with Diana to the music of one of his iconic films, Saturday Night Fever.

One of the best known photos of the late Diana, PssoW from the 1980's and her dress was one that was auctioned off for charity. :Jen:

Three weeks before agreeing to the divorce in 1996, Princess Diana wore a plain gold band in place of her famous engagement ring.
Which company made the gold ring?
Title: Re: Diana General Chat #2

@LouisFerdinand -Are you sure that it wasn't her wedding band? If it was her wedding band then I believe it was made by Clogau.

In the 20th century many of the Windsor wedding bands including Diana's were made of Welsh gold.

Gold of Royalty | British Royal Family and Welsh Gold | Clogau (https://www.clogau.co.uk/aboutclogau/goldofroyalty.aspx)

QuoteSome members of the British Royal Family have used pure Welsh gold to create their wedding rings, since 1923. This tradition was founded by The Queen Mother, then Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on her marriage to the Duke of York on 26th April, 1923.

Other members of the Royal Family that have had Welsh gold wedding rings include:

? 1923 The Queen Mother's marriage to King George VI
? 1947 Queen Elizabeth II marriage to Prince Phillip
? 1960 Princess Margaret?s marriage
? 1973 Princess Anne's marriage
? 1981 Prince Charles's marriage to Princess Diana
? 2005 Prince Charles's marriage to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall
? 2011 Prince William's marriage to Catherine Middleton
? 2018 Prince Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's very own wedding ring, from her marriage to The Duke of Edinburgh on 20th November 1947, is crafted from a nugget of pure Welsh gold from the Clogau St. David's gold mine.

The tradition of the British Royal Family using Welsh gold wedding rings was carried into its 95th year during the most recent royal wedding of Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on 19th May, 2018.

Rare Welsh gold is contained within each piece of Clogau jewellery, making it some of the most exclusive jewellery in the world. The content of Welsh gold can be identified by the Welsh dragon stamp, and other unique marks that denote a genuine piece of Clogau.

I'm not sure that she did? Do we know that Diana automatically stopped wearing her engagement ring on each and every occasion after her divorce? It was a huge and in several ways ungainly ring, that I'm sure felt uncomfortable to wear sometimes when Diana's weight went up and down.

Ive known several divorcees who ditched their engagement rings after divorce, too many unhappy memories. I didn't, as I was too fond of mine. When I remarried it went on the other hand occasionally for several years as my new engagement ring (sapphires, same stone) took pride of place on my left hand.

However, removing the wedding ring is a biggie for many divorcees and to be honest I haven't met many who have children who've done so. Walking around ringless on the left hand when their children are involved is a bit much for many people. On the other hand, I've known some, especially the childless who got rid of both rings as soon as possible after their divorce.

I have no idea what rings she wore.. I just was following what LF said which seems to be that Diana wore a plain gold band, presumably her wedding ring, in place of her sapphire engagement ring.

Yes, I think it was probably Diana's wedding ring, and for one reason or another she had just left it off that day.

For centuries royal brides had much longer hair that a lot of the hair was arranged in a style that was worn above and in the back of the lady's head.
Title: Re: Diana General Chat #2
Post by: TLLK on February 27, 2021, 04:19:07 AM
As I recall the problem was her bangs that were flattened by the tiara, but pulling them back wasn't likely to work either as they were too short.
Title: Re: Diana General Chat #2
Post by: Curryong on February 27, 2021, 05:13:05 AM
Diana wasn't the first Royal bride with short hair. The QM had long hair but you wouldn't have known it and the Duchesses of Kent and Gloucester did have short locks. Somehow though, that sleek, very permed close-to-the-head look suited the tiaras and veils the last two wore. I've never been fond of that shower cap look that was in when the QM married though.

Diana never liked long hair after her childhood and her hair was very thick and bouncy. That was the trouble I think. Had her hair been thinner they might have been able to do something with the top and sides.

Her youth and beauty saved the hairstyle and the very 1980s dress IMO. Everyone had grown used to the bangs (fringe) and it was just considered adorable even if not suited to tiara wearing!

Letters from Diana sell for over ?67,900 at auction ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/letters-from-diana-sell-for-over-67900-at-auction-157357/)

QuoteBefore the auction, a representative from David Lay?s said of Diana?s letters, ?She does come across as an extremely warm, witty, funny, charming and generous-hearted person and I think that is the main motivation for them being sold.?

All the proceeds from the three-day sale will be split between the English National Ballet, Opera Rara, The Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and the Benesh International Endowment Fund, organisations that meant much to Diana and Bramble.

The English National Ballet released a statement through the auction website saying that the organisation was ?proud to have Diana, Princess of Wales, as our patron from 1989-1997. Diana had a real love of dance, as was evident in her active relationship and support of the company throughout her patronage.?

This is wonderful news for two reasons. 1. There will be an indoor exhibition open to the public at a Historic Royal Palace which after a year plus of these sites being closed is so exciting. The items will on display in the newly restored Orangery.  :happy20:  2. That Diana's wedding dress will be displayed for the first time in 25 years and will be among the other items out for display.

Details from Historic Royal Palaces website. (Scroll down to see a short video with close ups of the wedding dress.)

Royal Style in the Making | Kensington Palace | Historic Royal Palaces (https://www.hrp.org.uk/kensington-palace/whats-on/royal-style-in-the-making/)

Quote
Royal bridal history

See the wedding dress of Diana, Princess of Wales up close, complete with its spectacular sequin encrusted train, which at 25 feet dramatically filled the aisle of St Paul?s Cathedral, and remains the longest in royal history.

The dress, on loan from HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Duke of Sussex, is now among the most famous in bridal history, and features a fitted bodice overlaid at the centre both front and back with panels of antique Carrickmacross lace that had originally belonged to Queen Mary, the groom?s great-grandmother.

Its gently scooped neckline and large puffed sleeves are trimmed with bows and deep ruffles of taffeta, a style popularized by the Princess in the early 1980s, while the full skirt is supported on a mountain of stiff net petticoats to create its famous silhouette.

IMHO the royal wedding dress that has the closest resemblance to Grace Kelly's was Marie Chantal Miller's gown for her 1996 wedding to Greece's CP Pavlos. It featured these details that I found to be very similar to Grace's : Ballgown skirt, high neckline, long sleeves and over course, lace.

Getting back to Diana's dress. I do agree that the dress needed to be a statement piece inside the cavernous St. Paul's cathedral. The train length was spectacular and I don't believe that anyone has attempted to repeat it, primarily because it would be difficult to maneuver in. No way would a gown and train like Diana's have worked for an Orthodox religious ceremony with three ceremonial walks around the altar.

If you click on the link for the Historic Palace website, there is a marvelous video which highlights details of the lace on the bodice and the hemline which is easily overwhelmed by other aspects of the dress ie: sleeves and the skirt.

@Macrobug would love to read that poster's views on Diana's dress.

The Palace was right - it WAS overly sentimental, but the Dean was thinking of the millions who adored her. For many of  them the more modern and sentimental song was comforting. I thought it was "cheesy", but I admire the Dean for his thinking. I'm glad Candle in the Wind was played and sung by Elton John, who had only recently been reconciled with Diana.

Do you mean the photo of a very young Diana by Lord Snowden? I don?t think it is ?long-lost?, just hasn?t been seen for years and is being ?re-discovered? by a tabloid now in order for journalists  to write about Diana?s tragic death once more.

It seems to have been taken for Vogue, who went through a phase in the 1970s and 1980s of featuring young aristo women from various old families for their articles. I remember seeing one featuring about six young things in a row, all wearing the family tiaras for instance. It?s not of any great interest other that it shows how naturally pretty Diana was and how she suited a short hairstyle.

@dianab - Thank you for the photos.  I'm guessing  that it's  Alexander Fellowes. He has red hair and is close in age to William so that might explain why they're close in height.
Now there is also George McCorquodale,  but  I don't believe it's him because he's closer in age to Harry so I doubt he'd have been that tall at that age.

QuoteA preparatory school attended by Diana, Princess of Wales, is to close this week due to 'unprecedented financial challenges'.

Riddlesworth Hall School, between Thetford and Diss in Norfolk, opened in 1946 in a Grade II listed 18th century former country house.

It will shut its doors permanently on Friday after struggling from 'the impact of the pandemic and the current economic climate'.

What happened to Princess Diana's godchildren and what are they doing now? | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11748413/What-happened-Princess-Dianas-godchildren-doing-now.html)

Quote

Princess Diana was often celebrated for her rapport with children, so perhaps it's no surprise that she ended up with 17 godchildren.

School friends, flat mates and other royal acquaintances all rushed to ask the Princess of Wales whether she would be godmother to their children.

Yet no one was ever forgotten.

She would remember each child's birthday, sending cards and presents no matter how busy she was.

And every Christmas, her godchildren would have gifts wrapped and placed under the tree.

Today, most of them are in their 30s and early 40s and working in a colourful variety of professions from fashion designer to a guide for horse safaris!

Yes @Amabel2 she does seem to be discussed less and less these days. There are the occasional articles about her but they're typically around her birthday and the anniversary of her death. When the Princess of Wales wears jewelry that Diana wore in the past ie Lovers Knot tiara, sometimes there are photos of Diana wearing it too. However even those seem to be there less and less.

Her son H (and Meghan) have taken over by making her their ghost, speaking beyond the dead - in her anniversary the media decided to write that M visited her tomb to ask her what to do and not, astrology, tarot, keeping a piece of hair at his night table, filling the media with their creepy ghost stuff to the point of disrespect - because of their ghost stories, Netflix and the Crown will ''honor'' her by converting her into a Ghost in the last season/episode.  Confirmed! (disgusting)

The couple have made sure to make people forget about her goodness in the world. Basically, the couple have made a joke about her.

Both. H (and M) in their intent to do 'justice' to Diana, have turned and made of her a joke. Exposing someone's flaws is fair, but it did/does take away the goodness she had. Note that even with H (and M) ghost stories, journalists make fun of Diana - because she would go to a tarotist, astrologer - it takes over the ''narrative''.

i.e. W requesting media and cinematography to respect his mother because of the panorama hoodwinked, deceived interview. H the opposite.  Read their statements, one is filled with empathy, compassionate. The other nope, basically let's expose it.

Allegedly rumor is H 'next book' is a crime thriller.  People close to Penguin Random House said that it will be based on Fayed's theory of assasination of his son and Diana, the latter being pregnant from Dodi.  This is what Gen Z will remember if H writes it.
Title: Re: Diana General Chat #2

The couple are so self absorbed that everything they do is damage to themselves and to whoever they mention. The person they mention - in this case Diana doesn't have the ability to defend herself or make it stop.

She has W, but it seems apparent that the BRF have ultimately decided that the couple don't need stopping from anyone, they are their own worst enemy. Some RR have said that W is very very heartbroken about what H is doing - the way H is using his mother. I would like to know what is the true sentiment of H other than the money making priority he has to feed his family (the only way so far is by trashing his family and the dead)

ETA: The BRF decision of not answering back is based on - the couple make a provocation because they want a ''reaction'' from Charles, Camilla, William, Kate.  To keep a soap opera front page news.  It must be very difficult for W (and extended to the Spencer brother and sisters) according to some RR's who have been in the RR career over 35 plus years! There is a big difference honoring your mother - mention of her 'goodness' in a charity vs H mentioning his mother like he is the one and only son stating she is her mentor beyond the grave, having a piece of hair, M pushing the narrative by stating in her anniversary that she want's to go to KP visit her statue to talk to her. The journalists reminding the mass-media that D herself would frequently visit a tarotist, astrologer.  As I said if you push this kind of narrative, it 'takes over'.  I don't know if H is doing it out of spite to his brother, for money, for both things or he's too dense to realize?! ???

Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest.
The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.
To those who have taken some form of accountability, thank you for owning it. That is the first step towards justice and truth. Yet what deeply concerns me is that practices like these?and even worse?are still widespread today. Then, and now, it?s bigger than one outlet, one network, or one publication.
Our mother lost her life because of this, and nothing has changed. By protecting her legacy, we protect everyone, and uphold the dignity with which she lived her life. Let?s remember who she was and what she stood for.

In what section of that statement  is Harry not showing compassion and empathy for his mother? He has been compassionate about her and her life on dozens of occasions since her death. He has NEVER treated his mother as a joke. Far from it.

As for insinuating that Harry?s Spencer uncle and aunts are estranged from him, where?s your proof? In fact Earl Spencer came out on his Twitter and attacked a female journo on a tabloid after she had a go at his nephew, speaking about his own dealings with her. I linked it here.

There is absolutely no proof that the Spencer uncle and aunts aren?t anything but sympathetic to Harry. After all they realised what Diana had to go through with the BRF, and Earl Spencer?s own speech at her funeral in WA wasn?t exactly flattering to Charles, the late Queen or the men in grey at the Palace.

Please do not spread untruths about what Harry said and didn?t say about the Panorama interview.

And the story about Harry writing crime thrillers and what people near Random House publishing are supposedly saying is just gossip and rumour. There?s no verifiable facts there.

Daniela Elser, an Aussie journalist at Aus News and no friend of the Sussexes, speaks here about the claim Meghan made about life in the RF being isolating and lonely, and how Diana found it that as well is shown in The Crown.

I was a fan of Diana from the time she was seriously dating Charles. I saw her in real life on several occasions in Britain and Aus.

I grew up in a pro Royal Family household but like millions of others of my generation and older my view of the BRF was irrevocably changed by the way Diana was treated during and after her marriage, the petty taking away of her HRH for example.

There may not be new docos on Diana but there are still dozens of them on YouTube that people watch. She?s not forgotten. And that is at least partially reflected in the poll numbers for Charles and even more so for Camilla in the last twenty six years. People don?t forget infidelities of those still alive and seemingly thriving.

What untruth? Harry statement about the Panorama Interview he shifts the entire blame generalizing the media rather than a *drunk driver and no seatbelt. He does mention her death and the blame to the media culture of writing about famous public people. He did one thing right, isolate himself in Montecito, but when he makes statements he trashes his most famous targets; Charles, Camilla, William and Kate.

What he has written in INK about his mother has backfired horribly, making the media talk about what he and Meghan and their ghostly Diana stories, to then associate it with Diana's frequent tarot and astrology visits. The media are suppose to report even when it's gossip, even when they know the couple are provoking the BRF.  So it's fine for the couple to USE the media but when it's not to their convenience they both get angry.

Since he shifts the blame to the media, he then should honor his own words by making a public statement against his boss Netflix.

You and Daniela Elser prove the RR's right, Meghan's push to relive Diana's claims, including faking a car chase.

Wiliam focus on the real 'objective' target

''It is my firm view that this Panorama program holds no legitimacy and should never be aired again. It effectively established a false narrative which, for over a quarter of a century, has been commercialized by the BBC and others.''

Who is going to commercialize the Panorma program, the one and only Netflix, Harry's boss.

That is why I want to know what does Harry really feel? Why isn't he making a public statement against Netflix? His words come empty when he says one thing but allows it to his pay master.

Whatever C, C, W and C do - he and the wife find ways to disrupt, out of spite, make a buck?! Whatever the ''reason''.  People DO see what the 'cycle' is, including what and how they both use the dead.

I am not going to keep repeating arguments with you about Diana and Harry and Meghan, about the Panorama article or anything else. I said what I felt about Martin Bashir and the Panorama interview at the time of the BBC apology and I am NOT going over old ground. I don?t know why you are insisting on rehashing it.

As for Netflix as I have constantly pointed out here the Sussexes are not responsible for the content of the TV series The Crown, which most people know is at least partially fictionalised anyway. Any more than staff and hosts etc employed on various BBC or ITV shows are responsible for other shows? content or for the stance of the heads of their organisations.

I have held the same view about Diana since 1981 when she joined the BRF and I am not going to change now, when she has been dead for over a quarter of a century.

I have held the same views about Harry since 1996 and Meghan since 2016 and I am not going to change my stance now. I have always made my views on Harry perfectly clear and I?m not going to repeat the same views in posts I have already put here a thousand times. Or refute every single thing you decide to put out about their characters and personalities in an unfavourable light.

Any debate with you always ends with how terrible, underhand, deceitful and dreadful etc etc etc etc the Sussexes always are, often using gossip from the internet and anti Sussexite gossipmongers as a source. I disagree with you and with those tactics entirely.

So, we will agree to disagree about Harry and Meghan or you can keep on going, I will leave this forum and you can continue in an echo chamber because sadly most RIF posters aren?t coming here several times a day any more.

I remember Diana's gesture so well. With that one move she made all those people who acted as if AIDS sufferers had the plague and were demonised look so foolish. She was a wonderful woman who stood out on her own with some of her causes and her work.
