Memorial Day 2021: Facts, Meaning & Traditions - HISTORY

QuoteMemorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2021 will occur on Monday, May 31.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

but you also have a date in November which remembers veterans nad the fallen?

TLLK

@Amabel2 -November 11 is known as Veterans  Day and honors all Veterans. Memorial  Day is specifically for those who died in service to the nation.

You're welcome. Both are national holidays so all schools, federal, state and municipal offices/buildings are closed today. There will be ceremonies at national cemeteries like Arlington in Washington D.C. When my children were in Scouts they'd typically join their troops for "flag planting" at cemeteries on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. They also would participate in ceremonies to honor those who gave their lives for their country.

I wondered the difference also.  Thanks

POTUS Biden with VPOTUS Harris at the traditional wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. This is Biden's first Memorial Day as the Commander-in-Chief. The tradition of wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery began after the Civil War. The Arlington Estate was ironically the former home of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Biden observes Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery with calls for empathy, unity

QuoteWASHINGTON ? President Joe Biden paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country during a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, speaking in deeply personal terms about overcoming loss and the importance of upholding democratic values at home and abroad.

In addressing the sacrifice made by military families who have lost a loved one, Biden spoke at length about his personal experience of losing his son Beau Biden, a veteran of the Iraq war, who died of brain cancer six years ago yesterday.

?To those who mourn a loved one today, Jill and I have some idea how you are feeling," Biden said in remarks after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, "Our losses are not the same, but that black hole you feel in your chest, like it is going to suck you in, it we get."
