QuoteTen hours of labor? That's pretty short for her first child. :)
thats short?!    ok.....i'm never having kids!  :P
The first chlid is supposed to have a pretty long labor, and then each child after that gets shorter. My little sister was the third child, and I remember being at the hospital at 6 am until she was born at 1 pm. I'll see if I can find something about this. :)

What True said is right.  I'm the eldest child, my mother went into labour early Sunday evening and I wasn't born until Tuesday morning!!!    Then my sister (3rd child) only took about 6 hours.

I have the medical explanation for this somewhere, but it's too early to think properly.  I'll post it later when I'm more awake.

That's not true for everyone.  My mum only had an hour long labour for my brother and by the time she had me she'd been going for 8 hours.

I think you'll find it has a lot to do with the size of the baby and how far the woman is dilated.  I have read that bigger babies are generally easier to have and deliver, on the most part, faster than smaller babies.  The pressure is greater on the cervix and therefore they dilate a lot quicker than if they had a smaller baby.

But of course..bigger babies can cause more problems.....some women are not big enough (Their pelvis being to narrow) to deliver bigger babies naturally.

I also spent part of my last prac in the neo-natal unit in one of our hospitals.  I also think it has a lot to do with the woman herself.  If she pushes hard enough to make sure the baby crowns and doesn't slip backwards after each contraction.  The longer the baby stays crowned for the faster the labour.  The more often the baby slips backwards after every contraction, the longer the labour.

Yeah, I'm the oldest of the three and I think my mom said she was in labor with my for 36 hours.

I found this online; it doesn't say anything about the labor of each child, but it's kind of interesting.

QuotePushing the baby out can take as little as five minutes or as long as three hours.

That's just the second stage of labour.  Women can get contractions for ages before actually getting to that point. :(

Yeah, it says 20 hours or something like that.
