This came up somewhere a few weeks ago where Anne apparently said that P Charles suggested the unusual name of Zara for her daughter because she was born at dawn.  I've now checked a couple of names books (hobby of mine) and they give Zorah as an Arabic  or Persian name signifying "dawn" while Zara "may" mean "flower." I was surprised that Charles would suggest such an unusual name, but if he did, why not at least get it Right?

It may depend on the book(s) or website(s).  This website says that "Zara" means "Glorious Dawn" and is believed to have originated from Hebrew.

Always be yourself.  Unless you can be a unicorn.  Then always be a unicorn.

Trudie

It is also Greek meaning bright as dawn from what I have read. I think Charles came up with the Greek translation.

Eos is the Titan goddess of dawn in Greek mythology.  I don't think it's an actual word, is it?

I really don't like to bring this up BUT, some of you may have heard the story of the dingo that took baby Azaria Chamberline?

Well apparently Anne liked the name but didn't like to associate it with her new baby duaghter as Azaria was taken at the time Zara was born and so she shortened or similarized it.

Anyway, the name story was a big thing at the time.

pinkpearls

Wow - I just Google the baby's name. Fascinating case! But terribly sad for the parents!

I do remember the case.  I believe there was even a made-for-TV movie made about it, wasn't there?  I'd never heard that Zara's name was associated with the baby's name, though.  Is it true, or is it urban legend?

Yes the name Zara was considered so unusual for a royaal. but I've never heard of this version.  Seems a bit far fetched to me?  As for the Zara = Princess, SARAH which is a Hebrew name, means princess but it is a pretty well known upper class name... OK it could be a variant spelling - but I think that Anne chose Zara as a sign that she didn't want the baby to be considered royal...

I don't know, either.  I only know the name Eos because it comes up fairly often in crossword puzzles, which I enjoy.  Crazy way to learn new things, huh?

Cinrit there was a movie version yes.
As for urban legend, well maybe.

amabel

I just think it sounds highly dubious Lindelle.  According to a story someone posted recently Anne said it was Charles' choice, and that it was IIRC a Greek name meaning "Dawn" because the baby was born early in the morning.
My Greek is not up to much.. well its' nothing, but I have read in 2 names books, (one better researched than the other) that the Persian or Arab name meaning "dawn" is Zorah, not Zara... I don't know of a Greek name for Dawn

Lindelle

Yes i understand that amabel.
It was just a story that came about when the case was happening, but us Aussies thought it mighty thoughtful.

amabel

Did it?  Sorry do you mean that the story that Anne liked the name Azariah and this came out during the Dingo baby case? But I assume that was in 1980 when the child was taken?  or was it later when the case was revieewd and Lindy C was let out of prison?

Lindelle

Yes she liked the name Azaria - it was a huge story here but because of the case she changed it to a similar.

I remember the case but never heard that Anne liked the name Azaria.

I remember that when Zara was announced it was also announced that Charles has suggested the name but that is all I remember.

cinrit

There is an American actor named Hank Azaria.  Just thought I'd put that out there to lighten the mood.

But our moods are light.

I've always thought Zara's name beautiful & considered it on my list of names for one of my daughters.
