Camilla CONFIRMS she and Charles will become the first royals to visit Cuba | Daily Mail Online

No official dates have been given by Clarence House, but it's apparent the couple will be carrying out a royal tour to the Caribbean this year.

They will travel in 'spring', the best coolest month is March, but I hardly doubt they will be travelling then, it would be officially announced.

^ April is the hottest month during the spring season, whilst May is rainy.

sandy

It can get hot there. It is curious that Camilla made the announcement. Charles supposedly does not like being "upstaged" he usually does the honors.

Curryong

I liked Cuban food on the few occasions I've tried it. (There are some great Cuban restaurants in Melbourne.) It all depends if you like spices I suppose. If Camilla sticks to the chicken and the rice she should be OK.

TLLK

@Curryong-I agree. Fresh fish, vegetables, rice  and even the black beans can be made without too much heat or heavy spices.  :)

It is good to see that the royals are going to visit Cuba. That country was vilified and isolated by the bullying tactics of the USA and its allies who hypocritically associate with the likes of Saudi Arabia ....the Mecca of human rights violations.

It is unusual for Camilla to be making the announcement but somehow I suspect that C&C are so comfortable with each other that there is no more need for silly rivalries over who is upstaging who. I am quite certain neither has any intention of upstaging each other. For a start, there is mutual trust and mutual support. Nobody is trying to harm the other. In fact, Charles sometimes let Camilla walk in front of him these days...a testament to how much more relaxed he is these days.

I have been to Cuba several times for humanitarian missions delivering clothing and shoes *no danger from the tourist hotels where Cubans are not allowed to mingle, went to the addresses that I was told to go and delivered, during the communist regime of Fidel Castro. The state and government policing were brutal then to their own people, those that opposed or were whispered to be against, the common citizen white shirts with whistles police corners and more than 2 people grouped talking were suspects of the revolution.   I carried out the favour for one of my  BFF who's father is a high flying right wing politician from a South American country.  I was then at that time more of a adrenaline junky/adventurous/Lucky Recless with no consecuences, fewww.

I believe since Fidel's death, his brother Raul and the new president Miguel Diaz, both belonging to the communist party and politburo are slowyly reforming the country for the better, hence the breaking ice visits of the then President Obama, and now via GB Foreign Office, the POW's.

I always enjoy hearing from people like @wannable who have been on the ground in Cuba rather than going with the narratives of the press or the so called opinion leaders.

I have to say that the USA and its allies have been very hypocritical in their dealings with Cuba. All the things mentioned against Castro have been done in Saudia Arabia and a host of other dictatorships but those are overlooked when it suits the Western powers.

I agree that progress is being made toward "friendlier" society for the people of Cuba. Cuba cannot rely on  a communist/socialist partnership with like minded nations to keep their economy afloat  and their society from crumbling. They're going to need to seek new partnerships with G8 nations.

Here is the event that they were attending when news of the official visit to Cuba was mentioned.

Charles and Camilla meet Lady Hale at the Supreme Court ? Royal Central

QuoteThe Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall made a visit to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on Tuesday to mark the court?s 10th anniversary.

At the building, Their Royal Highnesses met Lady Hale, the President of the Supreme Court and the most senior judge in Britain.

Baroness Hale gave Charles and Camilla a tour of the court and introduced them to the Deputy President, Lord Reed, as well as the registrars, ushers, clerks and Guides who work there.

Lady Hale was the first Woman Justice of the Supreme Court when it opened back in 2009.

The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal for civil cases in the UK, and criminal cases from England, Northern Ireland and Wales. It is the final court of appeal in the UK judicial system and deals with appeals on matters of law.

The Supreme Court was established ten years ago following the provisions set out in the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 which transferred the judicial functions of the House of Lords to the new court.

wannable

Yes, that was my only experience ever abroad carrying out humanitarian aid, I confess I was scared shetless, athough I had prepared with my BFF the baggage and selection of charity clothing/shoes for women and children. So I was NO mula/donkey or whatever its called when people knowing/or unknowing carry illegal substances.

royalanthropologist

He he. You definitely don't want to get on the wrong side of Fidel Castro during those times. It is a bit like an American caught on the wrong side of the Iranian border. They can do unspeakable things to you.

 'Political' prisoners, but with my tan and typical surfer girl look, surfboards, tourist, photography equipment, no social media give away of political affiliations, a goody two shoes sort of way...

@sandy Is also correct that it is very hot in spring (when they will tour) but summer is worst.  Hopefully Camilla will take her Colonial Umbrella  :hehe:

royalanthropologist

That colonial umbrella (read parasol) reminds me of Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile" with Bette Davies. I can imagine the royals on the cruise, exchanging unpleasantries and kinda bitchy remarks :hehe:

Speaking of a visit to Cuba: This is the time to go if anyone has the opportunity. The architecture has been left as it was prior to 1959. It isn't in good shape, but the elements are still there in their pure, original state. The resort areas back then were much less built up than what you see now, so the sea is the big star rather than developments of huge hotels, apartment buildings, malls, etc. I know this because a friend was able to go on a tour with a group of planners to see the architecture. Once commercialism returns to Cuba, and it surely will, everything will be built up, costing millions or more, and it will never look the same.  I'm sure the POW is aware of this and will enjoy the visit, heat or not. It's right up his alley. I'd have a hard time with the heat, but I would gladly make the trip if I had the opportunity!

I've never been to Cuba but the images I see of 1950s cars are somehow nostalgic of an age when things were much simpler. Compare that with Beijing, a place to get respiratory illness because of the incredible smog. I imagine it must be quite interesting to visit Cuba.

Diana is dead now and it's immaterial to discuss her.

I agree. Diana and her struggles in the 1980s and 1990s have little relevance to a trip planned by C&C in 2019.

This is an unusual and extremely interesting itinerary, especially Cuba. Charles has visited most of these gorgeous Islands before, but I'm sure he's looking forward to doing it again.

TLLK

Quite an extensive tour and with a wide variety of cultures and traditions. From communist Cuba to those nations that are part of the Commonwealth and are influenced by British culture. Cuba is a relatively new member of the Caribbean tourist trade while others have long been holiday destinations.

Where did you get that idea? I just said they had downtime I did not make any statements about 24/7. Just a comment and a fact. So whats the problem? Who is going to demand 24/7?
You said that they don't work that hard... and that its more like a vacation....

oak_and_cedar

Well it's true that it's not the most tedious work out there in comparison with coal mining for instance.
But i do think it's tedious enough what with being on "display" almost all of the time.
Speaking of which, i am now Reading the biography of king Edward(viii, i don't remember which number he had).
It's kind of difficult to wrap your head around the large amount of people turning out to see him.
Staggering. So if i'm going to bring this back to topic i would say that at least they're going to have it easier than the last POW. Better than nothing, i guess.

Princess Cassandra

Anyway, with 50+ engagements we should have lots of interesting articles to enjoy.  I'm looking forward to it and will follow the trip closely.
