QuoteYoung people are showing their commitment to their communities by taking part in 24-hour-challenges – which include transforming derelict landscapes and refurbishing community centres – with the hope their efforts will be recognised in a new national award programme.

The SkillForce Prince's Award – launched by SkillForce in conjunction with the charity's Royal Patron, HRH The Duke of Cambridge – will reward young people for an outstanding contribution to a community or cause, giving of their own time to make a difference to others. To be considered for the coveted award, young people must first complete SkillForce's '24 Hours to Make a Difference' challenge, in which they will work together to plan and implement a programme that will make a significant contribution to their community.

The most outstanding participants in the challenge will be selected to receive The SkillForce Prince's Award – which includes a trophy and a significant investment or experience that will further their personal, professional or educational development – and every participant will receive a SkillForce certificate, as well as a recognised national certificate in community volunteering. Judging of all the challenges will take place this summer, with winners of the award announced in the autumn.

In a message of support to the charity, The Duke of Cambridge said:

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge has presented the first charity award named in his honour to a group of children from Oldham.

His Royal Highness gave the SkillForce Prince's Award to 10 children who worked on community projects with the SkillForce charity, ahead of a gala dinner at St James's Palace.

Three of the young people who won were Noah Levins, 15, Teegan Cowley-Merrington, 15, and Lee Booth, 16, from Saddleworth School in Oldham.

They turned a derelict piece of ground into an outside area for disabled children, cutting back trees and painting fences. Teegan said: "We just felt very proud of what we had done."

Speaking as an educator I like the idea of members of the armed forces volunteering their time to work with students in need. Having the opportunity to meet and work with a positive role model is IMHO can be very constructive. Especially if this is in a neighborhood where such figures might be few and far between.

HRH The Duke of Cambridge is the first to send his Birthday wishes to the charity SkillForce who are celebrating their 10th birthday.

SkillForce is a charity that works in partnership with schools, drawing upon the skills of predominantly ex-Forces personnel, to inspire young people to succeed. Its mission is to inspire young people to achieve at school and succeed in life.
Over the past 10 years SkillForce has worked with over 50,000 young people in school raising attainment, improved life chances and taught employability skills. Looking forward, the charity in the next 10 years we aspire to work with over 100,000 young people.

"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to your children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female'." As patron of SkillForce, The Duke's first meeting will be at Goole High School, to launch the SkillForce Junior Prince's Award. I like how the Yorkshire visit ties in the history of D-Day with a hands on learning project. Students would have the opportunity to use their math skills along with carpentry to create the bridges. Team building requires communication and trust which may be lacking with some students.

QuoteWilliam Tells of Remembrance Hope

Young people must stand alongside older generations in honouring those who made wartime sacrifices for Britain, the Duke of Cambridge has said.

Speaking at a gala dinner in London to mark the 10th anniversary of the charity SkillForce, Prince William said Remembrance "must never become the preserve or responsibility of one generation".  He added: "I was privileged to be able to visit the poppy installation at the Tower of London in its early days.

" Even then, before it was as famous as it is now, the people observing the poppies came from every generation.

"The young there were just as moved as the old. Their grief and thanksgiving for the sacrifice of previous generations was just as real."

QuoteWilliam Jokes at Using Christmas Bells to Keep Track of George

After receiving a little bag of festive bells from a group of schoolchildren, Prince William joked: "We'll put these in his pockets and then we'll know where he [Prince George] is in the house!"

William, 32 was dressed smartly in a black tie and suit for the 10th anniversary gala dinner at the Imperial War Museum for chairty SkillForce, of which the duke is a Royal patron.

The youngsters from three primary schools in Watford,  gathered to proudly show off their project - a man adorned with poppies.

Part of the course focuses on Remembrance and William launched the SkillForce Junior Prince’s Award earlier this year.

As part of the evening, the duke also received a painting depicting the battle at Nimy Bridge where Lt Maurice Dease won the first posthumous VC of the First World War.  William visited his grave when he and his wife, Kate paid their respects at war memorials back in August.

QuoteA Speech by HRH The Duke of Cambridge at the SkillForce 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner

As Patron of SkillForce, I am delighted to be here this evening to mark the charity's tenth anniversary.  In the relatively short space of ten years, the charity has achieved so much and had a real impact on so many young lives.

The concept behind SkillForce is simple yet effective.  On the one hand, young people who are struggling with formal education need confidence building, motivation and loving discipline.  On the other hand, good men and women leave the Armed Forces every day who have spent a career instilling exactly those characteristics in others, but in uniform.  Put the two together, combine it with civilians who share the vision, and you have SkillForce.

SkillForce combines two things that are close to my heart.  It combines a concern for young people who are on the edge of society – who otherwise may not fulfil their potential – with the values and ethos of the Armed Forces.  Those values – teamwork, resilience, courage, dedication and service to others – are at the very heart of everything this charity does.

It is fitting that we should be here, at the Imperial War Museum, in Remembrance-tide, to celebrate the charity's work.  SkillForce believe as I do that Remembrance must never become the preserve or responsibility of one generation.

Royal Patron Launches Primary Schools Award

The Duke of Cambridge has launched a brand new national award for primary school children today in Goole, East Riding.

As Royal Patron of SkillForce, a charity that draws on the values and skills of ex-Forces personnel to inspire young people to achieve at school, The Duke celebrated the launch of the SkillForce Junior Prince's Award during a visit to Goole High School in the East Riding of Yorkshire on 4th June.

The unique Award is part of a programme to develop character and resilience in primary-age children, especially under-privileged pupils, as they prepare for the step-up to secondary school.

Peter Cross OBE, Chief Executive of SkillForce explains: "The SkillForce Junior Prince's Award is designed to engage younger learners in exciting lessons, challenges and community projects that prepare them for secondary education, a time when some students can begin to lose their way.

"Our programme builds up the children's confidence, resilience, teamwork and problem solving to give them a boost before the start of new adventures and encourage them to take a more active role in their town, city or village. It's SkillForce's 10th birthday, and we are honoured that our Royal Patron has marked the occasion by lending his support to the Junior Prince's Award for rollout across the country."

Based upon the comments from students, staff and volunteers it sounds like the program in Wales was a success.

Rebound

The Goole HS visit and program launch was in June, 2014. Winners announced June, 2015, with William sending a congratulatory message.

This is such an important program. Collaboration is a hugely important part of increasingly complex work environments. Teaching this skill to children at the appropriate ages will affect the way they perceive work in the future. Businesses are looking for workers who have "soft skills".

William as Patron and Harry as supporter have taken part in fundraising and highlighting SkillForce programs.

And it provides an opportunity for former armed forces members to move back into the civilian workforce. Which both brothers will have had experience with as they are now ex-service members themselves.
