What is the Order Of The Garter? I was told at an early age, that I had ancestors who were members. My maternal great greatparents were McGregors and came from Scotland.

Background Information regarding the Order of the Garter.

The appointment of the Knights and Ladies of the Garter is in The Queen's gift (i.e. without Prime Ministerial advice). Appointments to the Order of the Garter are therefore in the same category as the Order of the Thistle, the Order of Merit and the Royal Victorian Order which are also in The Queen's gift. Today's announcement brings the number of Companions to 21 (out of a maximum of 24).

The 2022 appointments to the Order of the Garter:

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, GCVO, PC, has been appointed a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Royal Victorian Order has been given to a number of current and former staff members from various royal households.

Note: While it is known as the "King's" Honours List, the British Government actually creates the list. The Royal Victorian Order is the only honor that is solely at the monarch's discretion.

Congratulations to all especially the youngest at 18 years of age and the eldest at 100 years!!   :high5:   Queen guitarist Brian May receives a knighthood joining other well known musicians/songwriters: Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Sir Mick Jagger etc..

The youngest to be honoured is Dara McAnulty, 18, from Annalong, County Down, who receives a BEM for his environmental work and work with people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

And the oldest is 100-year-old Peter Davies, from Bollington, in Cheshire, who is also be awarded a BEM for his work as a reading volunteer at Dean Valley Community Primary School.[/quote]

Air Chief Marshal the Lord Peach, GBE, KCB, DL, to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Right Honourable the Lord Kakkar, KBE, to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Lord Lloyd-Webber to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

A number of new appointments to Orders of the Garter, the Bath, the British Empire and the Companions of Honour become effective immediately.
