QuoteDuring her ten-year marriage to Prince Andrew, Sarah, Duchess of York, developed a close relationship with the protection officers who kept her safe.  Now, however, she has been moved to accuse the police of 'tortuous negligence' in a case involving the death of her friend's sister, Maria Stubbings.

Stubbings, 50, was strangled to death by her former boyfriend Marc Chivers at her home in Chelmsford in 2008. This week, the jury at an inquest said that Essex Police failed Maria in almost every part of its investigation.

Fergie attended the first day of the inquest at Chelmsford Coroner's Court last month to support Maria's family, who had long campaigned for it to take place.

'I am so proud of the family of Maria Stubbings,' the Duchess says. 'Please let their victory be the beginning of the end to this kind of tortuous negligence.'
