QuoteThe Duke of York joined 150 soldiers from the 9th/12th Royal Lancers paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of their regimental predecessors at the service at Montcel-Fretoy in France.

It took place 100 years to the day after the battle of Montcel in which Lieutenant Colonel David Campbell led two troops of the 9 Lancers in a charge and overthrew a squadron of the 1st Garde Dragoner (Prussian Dragoons) in fighting that, remarkably, left only four dead.

Lt Col Campbell, the commanding officer, was wounded in the charge and was dismounted from his horse.  Records recount how he was astonished to escape without being trampled on by the horses still engaged in combat.
