Prince Arthur was a freemason. He became Grand Master in 1901 when his brother, who had been the Grand Master for 27 years, succeeded to the throne as King Edward VII.

The whole British royal family until fairly recently were deeply entrenched in the Freemasonry tradition. All Queen Victoria's sons became Freemasons, not just Arthur. King Edward VII reached the highest levels and enjoyed it. I'm not sure about Prince Philip but Charles has remained uninterested and I'd be surprised if Andrew and Edward were Freemasons. As far as I know the present Duke of Kent is of senior rank in the organisation, but his sons are Roman Catholics and I doubt that they have followed him.

Like his great-uncle Arthur, the Queen's father, King George VI, was a most active and enthusiastic Freemason. He believed it helped his stammer as it never occurred when he was reciting parts of the Ritual.

In 1899 Prince Alfred, the heir to Saxe-Coburg and Gotha died. Prince Arthur relinquished his claim to the duchy. Did he have the right to relinquish his son's (Prince Arthur Frederick) claim to the duchy?
