Urdangarin: Spanish king's brother-in-law loses appeal and faces jail - The Local (https://www.thelocal.es/20180612/urdangarin-spanish-kings-brother-in-law-loses-appeal)

Quote?aki Urdangarin, the disgraced husband of Princess Cristina, King Felipe VI's older sister, and now faces jail after he lost his Supreme Court appeal, according to court sources.

In February 2017 he sentenced to six years and three months, having been found guilty of syphoning off millions of euros from the not-for-profit Noos Foundation

Urdangarin, 50, who was stripped of his royal title of the Duke of Palma,  appealed the sentence to the country's Supreme Court, which has the power to confirm, overturn, cut or increase the term.

On Tuesday, the long-awaited appeal verdict upheld Urdangarin?s conviction but reduced the jail time by five months to five years and 10 months, according to court sources widely reported in the Spanish media, although no official confirmation from the Supreme Court has yet been made.

I hope he goes to jail, goes directly to jail and does not pass 'Go'. This seems to have been going on for years. Best to serve the sentence and get it over and done with.

Justice delayed is justice denied...for both victims and perpetrator. They should have done it all quicker. By now he would have finished his sentence.

For now that's a good idea, I think. Cristina has to maintain some sort of normality in her children's lives, however hard it is going to be. No doubt the children miss their father and I suppose some kind of arrangements for prison visits are going to have to be made in the future.

King Felipe VI of Spain has arrived in Mallorca for his annual summer holiday. Felipe, along with Queen Letizia and their two daughters, was spotted driving into the Marivent Palace on the island where they traditionally spend part of August.

QuoteThe stay is usually a relaxed occasion, marked by photocalls and day trips. However, this year, the visit will be under intense scrutiny as debate continues in Spain following the decision of Felipe?s father, Juan Carlos I, to leave the country as allegations about his financial affairs continue.

Typically there is also a photo session or two with the family as they meet guests at Marivent Palace or go to a cultural/historic venue for some sightseeing. Felipe usually goes sailing with his various family members as the Spanish royals and their Greek cousins have a long association with sailing. Former King Constantine of Greece, Infanta Cristina and King Felipe were all members of their respective nations' Olympic sailing teams.

However I don't believe that this will be the King's most relaxing summer holiday.

There have been rumours for years that Mallorca wouldn't be the first locale of choice for Felipe and Letizia but they go there because it is continuation of a tradition that Juan Carlos and Sofia began, which allowed photo opportunities for the people to see the RF in a more relaxed and informal setting than usual.

In the first years of Felipe's reign that was important, and Sofia has also visited at the same time for a family vacation. The couple might wish to holiday annually somewhere else in Europe (like the Danish RF who always visited their villa in South of France for years) but it would be considered unpatriotic and therefore unpopular.

Nevertheless, Mallorca looks pretty good, even in the middle of a pandemic, to someone, namely me, freezing in Stage Four conditions in icy Melbourne!

@Curryong- Sorry that you are under stricter quarantine now especially after Australia had started off with such low numbers at the beginning of the pandemic. Cold/icy winter conditions do not make it easier.

I agree that the family go there primarily to keep up the tradition started by JC and Sofia which was IMO a good one to establish considering the early days of their reign. These types of trips remind me of the Danish royals annual summer cruise around Denmak. It promotes local economy and tourism plus they family was able to indulge their sailing passion which they all seemed to enjoy. For the king, the trip seems to be a very busy one with meetings with politicians and business leaders so I don't think it's their true holiday. For years I have read that the family slips away for a private vacation after the public one with Letizia and the girls often going ahead of Felipe.

The news that JC wont be returning home to Spain for Christmas isn't really a huge surprise, is it? Quite frankly, it's extraordinary that he thought it would be OK. Nor should it be a shock to him to learn that King Felipe is distancing himself from the latest scandal as quickly as possible.

King Felipe places focus on unity and integrity in much anticipated Christmas speech ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/spain/king-felipe-places-focus-on-unity-and-integrity-in-much-anticipated-christmas-speech-153960/)

QuoteKing Felipe VI has highlighted the importance of principles and ethical obligations in his Christmas speech in a thinly veiled reference to the scandal surrounding his father, King Juan Carlos.

The comments came towards the end of a highly anticipated festive address which saw the Spanish monarch urge unity, hope and strength from all as his country tackles the personal, social and economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. But it was his words about upholding integrity that attracted the most attention as the controversy around the financial dealings of Juan Carlos continue to swirl.

King Felipe addressed Spain from the Zarzuela Palace. With a crib and a Christmas tree behind him, he began by remembering those missing from Christmas celebrations this year with many families facing a very different festive season as coronavirus pandemic restrictions prevent big get togethers. He also acknowledged those for whom this Christmas was particularly painful, saying ?in thousands of homes there is a void impossible to fill due to the death of your loved ones, whom I now want to remember with emotion and with all respect.?

King Felipe's Christmas speech had the most viewers for any of the past royal holiday speeches in the country's history. I believe that much of it was due to how the King would address the ongoing issues surrounding his father's financial dealings.

Title: Re: The Spanish Royal Family General News and Chat
Post by: Curryong on December 28, 2020, 01:13:48 AM
I wish that JC himself would address the ongoing issues connected with his financial affairs, otherwise known as corruption on a large scale. Of course he's not going to, especially as he knows he could well end up in jail, as his son in law did with his doings, and in his own case he would probably die in there.

Nevertheless, leaving huge messes for your son to deal with, especially when said son is your successor on what has been in the past quite a volatile throne, is neither kind, nor honourable nor decent behavior. Perhaps he could reflect on this the next time he goes to confession.

I do wonder whether, apart from his own greed and cupidity,  paying off and/or catering to his various girlfriends and mistresses' demands and wants had some bearing on his actions.

Amen!!

IMHO Juan Carlos and his Belgian counterpart King Albert need to both consider asking for forgiveness as their personal lives have definitely had an impact on their successors. Fortunately for the monarchs in the Netherlands and Japan, their predecessors' actions were more kind, honorable and decent.

QuoteInfanta Cristina of Spain has separated from her husband, Inaki Urdangarin.

The couple, who have been married for 24 years and who have four children together, have parted just days after photos of Inaki Urdangarin holding hands with another woman appeared in the Spanish press.

In a brief statement, the couple said ?by mutual accord, we have decided to to separate. Our dedication to our children remains the same. Given that this is a private matter, we ask the utmost respect for all those involved.?

The statement was signed ?Cristina of Borbon and Inaki Urdangarin?.

IMO it was time for the couple to end their marriage even though rumors of his infidelity had been around for some time. Hopefully the "pink press" which makes the UK's tabloids look sweet and polite, will leave their children, her sister etc...alone and stop badgering the family for information. Personally I doubt that the reigning King and Queen will offer up any statement beyond the usual "TM  have been informed and support their decision." Cristina has been a persona non grata for years after the news of the NOS scandal broke. She's been publicly estranged from her brother and sister-in-law for a very long time due to her own involvement in the scandal. While the ice might thaw in time for the siblings' private relationship, I don't anticipate Cristina to be present at any official events except for the eventual funerals for her parents.

Yes, one of the nicer things about these Mallorca vacations is that we see the King going out to dinner with his mother and daughter, Queen Sofia out and about with her sister as well, just different combinations that we don?t usually necessarily see.

How tall is Leonor! Ex Queen Sofia, Queen Letizia and the two Infantas out to dinner. Leonor towers over her sister, other relatives and even others in the background. She?s taken after her father, Felipe, in height that?s for sure. I wouldn?t be surprised if she?s nearly six foot already!

Yes, Sofia! Because Leonor is the older of the two sisters and the heir I always get it into my head for some reason that she?s the taller of the two. Sofia has not stopped growing. She will probably end up 6.3 or 6.4.

Not really. She is 15 which for a girl tends to be when they reach their max height. She may gain another inch or so but major growth spurts should be done.Same with Leonor, going to always be the shorter.

Sofia has more then height. She grew out of her young girl features quicker then Leonor. And since they stopped being dressed identical, her choices always seemed a bit older. All adding to the feel she is older.

Lovely photos of the summer.  :flower3:

Yes, there have been some lovely extended family photos of the extended family on holiday this year, including the two Infantas. I remember us discussing the photos of the two sisters dressed identically a few years ago, and everybody being glad to see them being given some leeway in clothing a bit later.

It?s always a bit sad to see growing girls in semi-identical clothing. It reminded me of the teenage future Queen and Princess Margaret Rose, when Elizabeth was about fifteen and Margaret twelve, but still dressing more or less the same.

I'm hoping that each girl has a little more freedom of choice when it isn't a public or semi-public outing. As the mother of a leggy daughter, I don't envy Letizia's task of trying to find something long enough to fit Sofia. It's a challenge when most off the rack items are too short for your girl. There are some very tall young ladies in this generation of royals: Louise, Amalia, Elisabeth, Sofia, and Ingrid-Alexandra all have inherited height from their parents.

There are 'clothes' that simply are not styled or stylish to body types.  And fashions (holes) that should only stick to washed or really old vintage 'jeans' and jean jackets'.
The End.

Yikes, it's like a Midlife Crisis.

Leti is very fit, but the bone structure of her fit look in the back looks terrible.

I like Queen Leti, but I?ve always said she is too thin. Her ribs stick out in very thin clothing and her shoulder blades could cut a hand in half. And I?m not an admirer of holes cut in strange places in clothing, fashionable though it may be, so it?s a No from me for that skirt. Many other times her fashion choices are fabulous, though, so I forgive her!

And, I meant to add, there comes a time, in middle age hopefully, when celebs and others who have had procedures done and who use Botox extensively, to look in their mirror and say honestly to themselves ?Do I want to continue with this?? Sorry Leti, and I know you had a procedure on your nose years ago, but that time perhaps is now.We would  all love to look 25 or even 30 again, but trying too hard in that direction can lead to some quite grotesque results. I wonder whether Leti ever looks at Silvia of Sweden (a beauty in her youth) and muses?..

She?s has had more than her nose done. Chin, boobs, nose again.   And now lifts and she is starting to have that mask grimace.  And she looks older than she is.   She was never a classical beauty but she was striking in a very strong boned way.  But she is getting a bit scary looking.  And the thinness is not in her favour.  A bit of softness is flattering to a woman in her 50s.  At some point it?s the butt or the face.

I thought Leti?s original nose was perfectly fine and suited her cheekbones and chin. Reminds me of Michael Jackson when people are constantly changing their face. Same with Nicole Kidman. In the end, all natural expression is sand-blasted off and in extremes people have difficulty moving parts of their face. I remember reading that Joan Rivers couldn?t close one eye to sleep she?d had so many procedures done. I loved her humour but her face in old age was a mask, as you say.

I know we all age yet Leti is taking it to beyond scary for me.  Sometimes I wonder if she dresses down for an event just to get attention or to rebel at someone or something.  Her choices in clothing has left me questioning her ability to understand the meaning of some of the events that she has attended in the past.  This skirt with the Hole...what the h*ll was she thinking, that is not fashion at all, that is saying ..*Hey look at me* type of clothing which we see so many times on young girls in social media wanting attention with weird clothes.  That skirt would not even look good on either of her daughters .........and eating a burger with fries would not hurt her either as her bones stick out at times.

Continuing the annual Year in Review series for 2022.

The shadows of the past continue to dominate Spain?s Royal Family in a year that looked to the future ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/spain/the-shadows-of-the-past-continue-to-dominate-spains-royal-family-184444/)

QuoteThe Spanish Royal Family had a relatively quiet year in 2022 but one event dominated. The much anticipated but brief return of King Juan Carlos I to the country he reigned over for close to four decades brought controversy and became the hallmark of twelve months where the past was as present as the future.

Froilan to move to Abu Dhabi where he's taking a job with an oil company.

Felipe de Marichalar joins his grandfather King Juan Carlos in exile ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/spain/felipe-de-marichalar-joins-his-grandfather-king-juan-carlos-in-exile-186435/)

Quote

King Juan Carlos of Spain?s 24-year-old grandson, Felipe Juan Froil?n de Marichalar y Borb?n, has been at the centre of a number of scandals in the recent months. He has been involved in nightclub brawls, police interrogations and has been linked to right-wing figures.

Felipe, who is fourth-in-line to the throne, has now discreetly left Spain to join his grandfather, Juan Carlos, in exile in Abu Dhabi.

The young royal is the son of Infanta Elena, and according to Spanish media, it was her who suggested that he should move to the United Arab Emirates so he can stay away from the public spotlight.

Felipe joined his grandfather in January, with sources suggesting he will likely stay there until August in the hope that the media coverage of recent events will be dampened.

Nevertheless, he will not lie on the lazy side during his temporary stay in the Middle East. Spanish media claim he has a job in the ATC oil company.
