Although Diana and Patrick ultimately could not see eye to eye, it was nice to read these compliments that he paid to her.

Quote? She was a professional to her fingertips,? he explained. ?She made everything look easy and she was wonderfully spontaneous, a very astute observer of people and very emotionally empathetic, yet at the flick of a switch, she could out-royal the royals. She had an amazing aristocratic, regal quality, which set her apart from other princesses.

Oh come, he was not at all nice about her when he wrote his first book, he's just waffling on now, trying to drag out his career as "Diana's aidie" for another 10 years

Jephson was not kind to Charles in his book as well.
what has that got to do with Diana?  Jephson worked for Diana... he was not at all friendly to her in his book, and she was the one he was wrokign for so one would presume that he initially liked her...

It has everything to do with it. I read the book and I have a right to give my opinion.

I don't think he "disliked" Diana. He worked for her he was not a personal friend or enemy.

Princess Diana's private secretary Patrick Jephson on how his resignation shook their friendship (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/princess-dianas-private-secretary-patrick-jephson-resignation/)

Quote

The last time I spoke to Princess Diana was 21 years ago, and we were both having a pretty awful day. I was hand-delivering my letter of resignation as her private secretary, and she was adjusting to the news that her beleaguered support organisation was about to have a tedious vacancy at the top.

Not only was this highly inconvenient, it also broke a cardinal rule of royal employment: such vacancies should only occur with the prior approval of the royal employer. Instead, I had had the temerity to resign, without her consent, and she hadn?t even had the fun of firing me first.

No wonder I felt a death ray being aimed at me from the famous blue eyes. Even as I tried to meet it head on, I reflected on the stupidity (or was it arrogance?) of those who forgot the ice and steel programmed deep into the aristocratic DNA of Lady Diana Spencer.

Is Patrick Jephson still banging on about Diana? I realise he has a new edition of his memoirs of his time as Diana's Private Secretary to promote, but he's becoming nearly as irritating as the revolting Burrell.

Yes, Diana had a core of steel within. Just like the former Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, another Earl's daughter. She was feeling beleaguered at that particular time and no doubt regarded his departure as a betrayal of sorts.

(Incidentally I think he was right to resign. Diana had kept the Panorama story from her Private Sec which was a betrayal of him by her. We know why, though. Because he would have had told her not to do something she was determined on.)

I think he certainly did dislike her.  He wrote a book that he should not have written, and was hihglty critical of her.. He knew perfectly well that it was a betrayal of their relationship as employer and employee to write about her..but he did ti because he wanted money and because he was peeved at the ending of the relationship.  Now he is less critical because he still wants to make money out of writing abouth her, and he knows it would look bad, if he continued to complain about her...

So he betrayed her by writing the tell all.

I'd say hate is a bit strong. I think he disliked her and was angry with her when he wrote his first book.  He was angry that she was keeping things from him, that she did n't trurst him and that she did something that he was against, like the Bashir interview and also of course there was the remark to Tiggy, which I gather was the final nail in the coiffin.  He knew he could not go on working with her and he was annoyed and had a spite against her..

I'd hardly say hate.  I think he never thought that much of her - probably always thougth she was not that bright...but it was a good job, until Diana starting causing dramas and making the job dififuclt for him...

Jephson got money out of it and years of being paid to do interviews on documentaries and news shows.   He should think of Diana when he opens up those royalty checks. He did not do it out of spite, he did it because of the $$$$$.  This opportunist is given a free pass and Diana is slammed. Unreal. He's a shade below Burrell in opportunism IMO.

huh?  How is diana beign  "slammed?"  Jephsons' tone about her in his first book was IMO contemptuous.  he was clearly angry about the way things had ended between them.. and from his way of talking about her, he came across as pretty critical. I think he thougth she was not very bright, but the job was a prestigious one and he was trying to manage her lworking life after her separation, to keep her iwthin the RF and doing royal work.. However he claimed that Diana didn't want to stick with projects so ti was hard to keep her working.  HE also had the expeirnece of her going behnd his back with the Panorama interview which was ebound to anger the queen and the RF and drive Diana right out of the Royal fold, while   he was tyring to keep her in it.  Then there was the Tiggy incident..a nd Diana leaving a message on his phone saying something like " the boss knows about your disloyalty"  Clealry he could not go on working for her.. they didn't trust each other and were on bad terms.  So when she died, he could have written a "nice" book bout her but instead he wrote quite a nasty one.. so clearly it wasn't just for the money...

Ha, Friendship!!  I don't think so. I think that it is pretty obvious from that little quote that he did not like her much, and that while he appreciated she was tough (not sure if she really was) he left in a bad spirit, with both of them distrusting and disliking each other...

He liked her enough to make money from his association with her.

I read the Jephson book and he did express sympathy about Diana's marriage. He even revealed a damning story about how Charles showed contempt for Diana. He was having a briefing with the Waleses about a future trip (another person was with them) and Diana was asked what her plans were during a tour (and she did have plans re: her appearances) and before she could answer Charles sneered "shopping isn't it darling." Diana looked very upset and did not say anything. To me that does not show "contempt" he was confirming what Diana herself said about her relationship with Charles.

Not always the case. Some can have loved someone and still write a tell all book. And made money.

I think without Diana Jephson would be a nobody that nobody would want to listen too. he's not better than Burrell.

He did help Diana by putting in a case of the nasty treatment Charles was giving her.

IMHO the fallout from the Morton book/her denials about cooperation then later the Panorama interview  shook up Diana's staff and there was mistrust on both sides (Diana vs. staff) afterwards.

After her death and the decades that have followed, it appears that those who tendered their resignations seem to have had the opportunity to reflect upon those turbulent weeks/months/years and perhaps have softened their opinions a bit.

Im cynical about those who abused their positions to write books. I think if they have now softened on their attitude towards Diana, it is because they still want to make money out of her..a nd they figure it would look odd if they were still complaining about her and hteir job losses etc from 20 years back, still.  So they've tweaked their stories a bit and said "Oh now I realise I quite liked her and she wasn't that difficult"....

but he did bash her.  His book was wrong in the first place since royal staff are not supposed to write about their employers, and not many of them have done so.  And his tone about her was critical to the point of contemptuous.   He and Wharfe both wrote books which were unkind about her because boht of them had quarrelled with her and parted on bad terms.  Jephson didn't care about her, he wrote an unkind book, because he was annoyed with her and he didn't care that he was "bashing  a dead woman"

well I don't think it is quite that bad, its hardly full of scandalous stories...
but it is certainly wrong minded and cirtical of her.  She had done a lot of things  that annoyed him, and he clearly felt that he had to leave her employment.. and she was annoyed then that he had walked before she could push him....
but it amazes me to think that doing a  book which  betrays someone's confidence and tells things about them to the public is any kind of a sign of affection.

He also gave damning evidence about the way Charles treated Diana. This anecdote is used in many Diana books (the shopping isn't it darling story). He would have suppressed that story if he "bashed" her. He was not kind to her in the book but DIana authors use the shopping story as a takeaway.

Yes amabel he as annoyed but he got money for his annoyance. ANd tried to make himself relevant and is still doing so.

He hardly loathed her, but I think he didn't much like her, esp after they had parted... I think he thougth she was something of an airhead, but  he wanted this prestigious job and he tried to keep Diana in the fold of the RF, because if she left, he would probably not have that prestigious job any longer.  If she was not doing public work, if the RF had cooled in their relationship with her, she was not going to be so influential and not in need of an aide like him.
So he tried to keep her working and find her projects that she could use her gifts in.  But Diana as he said, didn't want to commit to tings.  THen she did the Panorama interview and he kew that after that, she would be pushed into divorce and out of the RF so he was angry with her over that and te last straw was her remark to Tiggy?  He started to look for another job, and knew it was time to quit..

Basically the Earl Spencer is officially accusing the BBC via Martin Bashir that they (he) conned and swindled the late Princess Diana.

Interesting twist, one doesn't keep forged papers, this must have landed on his lap recently.

Why is this dragged up now?  Its been siad for some time that Bashir played some tricks on Diana, but IMO she wanted to talk about her marriage and didn't need much persuading.  Of course its wrong that they preyed on her insecurities, but IMO Di wouldn't have listened to advice to desist from an interview...

Hence what I said, these accusations are very serious, Earl Spencer would not and never keep it all this time, it must have IMO landed on his lap just recently. IMO someone in the BBC found it in a confidential file, and boom a la Biden laptop, shared it immediately to the right!!! person.

Following my comments in this thread and with new developments, the Graphic Designer IMO was the person who dropped the confidential documents at the Earl Spencer's lap.  He said to have known and kept it a secret for 20 years.

Why is he revealing it now?  There have been rumours, in fact outright statements about this for some time so I dont see why its become an issue.  The BBC dont play fair.. surpirsed?  Not really....

Usually desperate need for money. Money equates roof and food, basic needs, then pay services sub basic needs, then life and health insurance, and so on. A Graphic Designer job to day shrunk from Monday to Friday to very likely 3 days a week, and he also very likely agreed with the new labour contract (until better times) or get jobless.   i.e. my family member in the USA who works for the Arts and Entertainment world is good, but subordinates pick 2/6 who you can get rid off for now. This family member had to take the decision, it's unfortunate but this is replicating everywhere.

To date the stats worldwide of family economics in crisis, we will soon see a meltdown - financial predictions, with or without Pfizer vaccine, coming very soon.

If it is true that Charles told Diana he didn't love her the night before their wedding that is unbelievably cruel and I'm afraid I would have turned round and walked, and damn the wedding arrangements. There's no way I would have stood at the altar knowing the man I loved didn't love me, whether it was a tiny village church or St Pauls. However, I'm not sure I believe Penny Thornton. I think Charles kept Diana on a string for a bit longer than that after the wedding.

I am curious as to why this has come out now? Does someone have it out for Bashir? And are now choosing to speak out when he's ill? Why did Earl Spencer decide to publish this now? And, interestingly and perhaps this is just a coincidence, but this is all occurring just after he's released a book. Though maybe it's just me being cynical.

And I don't believe prince Charles told Diana he didn't love her a day before. Diana did write that he left her a not before the wedding day saying how proud he was of her and was looking forward to seeing her at the alter. Hardly the words of someone confessing they didn't love you. IMO.

I wonder why these revelations are coming out now...

And of course odious Burrell had to put his 2 cents in. Apparently he was everywhere in the center of things. Soon he'll say that him and Diana had a special connection and he could read her mind. Loser.

Burrell has already said, many times, that he and Diana had a special connection. We had a giggle here not so long ago that Burrell morphed into Mrs Danvers from 'Rebecca'!

Why is it breaking now? Well, I'm no expert, but surely the release of this new Channel 4 doco probing the circumstances behind Diana's explosive Panorama interview so many years ago probably has something to do with it! The fact that they got people talking, like the graphic designer who's probably been seething with resentments for decades about Bashir, a typical overblown journalist with few ethics and little morality, has been a bonus for Channel 4.

The Channel 4 executives are probably wetting themselves with excitement over all this PR for the documentary and being able to give the BBC, an organisation that nowadays matches Bashir in levels of moral fibre, a punch in the nose. Every so often scandals break out about the rottenness, inside and out, of the BBC, a Corporation that was admired all over the world when I was young. The Jimmy Savile mess was a typical example, but little changes.

And yes, I do believe that Earl Spencer, a not particularly elevated individual IMO, has a new book out provides a reason for himself to interpose himself into the limelight once again, with the excuse of protecting his sister. Even if he was the one who introduced Bashir to her in the first place.

Sadly, she was a very very stubborn person, with all the fake documents et all, all famous and public people have advisers, handlers and security.  EVEN if she had stayed with the 3 or 1 or 2 or 3, she would end up doing whatever she wanted. Ultimately she signed up for the TV show.

I can't help but think that her son Harry and his wife Meghan are alike in that sense.

It's a train wreck. I almost feel sorry but with the pandemic, reality has hit the billions in the planet! The 1% really need to wise up.

not sure waht Edward being terminally ill would have to do with anything.by then he was well down the line of succession and in any case Di's son was heir after charles.  But again, very distressing to feel that (if all this is true) Diana was so shaky and gullible....
Not only was Prince Edward down the line of succession but he had one older brother who came between him and his oldest brother Prince Charles. The middle brother was Prince Andrew.

Even if he was the one who introduced Bashir to her in the first place.

Yes, I do remember that! The similarities are eerie IMO. His fixation is unhealthy and I wonder how much it is he really knows about Diana. I simply cannot believe that Diana would be taken in for too long by this creature, and indeed, weren?t there rumours of her wanting to fire him? He has benefitted alot from her untimely passing. I think he has made for himself a larger role in her life than what is necessarily true. Loathsome figure he is. Honestly.

Yes, I agree that it has to do with the documentary. I do think also that people have it out for Bashir and since he?s ill he can?t speak up for himself. I don?t think many hav eforgiven him for his expos? on Michael Jackson. Though granted, Bashir is not a paragon of virtue to put it mildly.

Earl Spencer published a book not too long ago. He also gave an interview where he said that Frances, his mother, was not fit for motherhood. For her own son to say that about her, in public and in order to sell a book, is particularly cruel. I remember there were some letters published that he wrote to Diana saying how he was sorry for her mental problems or something similar. To see him now grandstanding is galling. A thoroughly unlikable man IMO.

Diana kept Burrell on for quite a while for someone who was "thinking of firing him".. I think that as always with Diana, she was extremely fitful and volatile.. One minute perhaps thinking of getting rid of him and at others depending on him and confiding in him.
As for Spencer, can you quote this interview where he said his mother wasn't fit for motherhood?  I haven't seen it.   I don't think myself that Frances was a particularly good mother, and was clearly not on speaking terms with Diana in the last months of her life.
He did write privately to Diana about how her mental problems made her difficult to deal with, which was basically true... They had a big row in 93 over her renting a house, which damaged their relationship... and didn't make it up for some time....

Charles Spencer spoke to the Sunday Times recently about his new book, daughter's engagement and other matters. In discussing The Crown he spoke about the early childhood of himself and Diana, revealing that he had been in and out of therapy for more than twenty years about it.

The Times is behind a paywall. However Hello has published a pr?cis of his remarks in the interview. Spencer spoke about his father as a constant source of love and support, but that his mother was not cut out for maternity 'not her fault, she just couldn't do it.' He also stated that his mother promised Diana faithfully that she would return to Wood Farm when she left home but she never did. This resulted in Diana waiting for her on the steps every day.

well "not cut out for motherhood" isnt the same as not fit for it... and I've always thought that Frances was not all that great at motherhood.. but as a girl of her class and time she had little option but to have children, esp. boys. I think that Charles S and Diana both suffered most from Frances' walking out more than Sarah And Jane.. tho' Sarah had some problems as well.   One of Di's nannies, I think it was Mary Clarke, said that when the children went to visit her in London, she would get upset and cry over them when they were going back and that would upset Diana.. who would cry over her poor mother being all alone.  the others would point out that Frances had her husband with her and that she wasn't all alone.. but clearly Frances' emotional reactions sparked off emotional reactions in Diana. I suppose she did her best, Frances  -but It seems like she reacted very emotionally to all sorts of situations when calm would have been better...
And while Diana clearly flew off the handle over the stuff about the HRH, I think that Fran should have known how sensitive she was on the issue and not said anything.
Having siad that I dont think that Johnny was a great parent either..

I believe that Frances was pushed into marriage with Johnny by Ruth who was enchanted by the thought her daughter would be a Countess. She was younger than Diana when she married him.

Granted that parenting was very different among the upper classes fifty years ago than it is now. However, Frances's emotional responses and the way in which she left home exacerbated the effect on her younger children a hundred fold.

And surely those children when they grew up would have a clearer understanding of their parents as people and their roles in their childhood than any observers like us, whose knowledge of the situation is derived from bios, articles and documentaries.

Diana and Charles adored their father and obviously felt he had their best interests at heart throughout their youth, in spite of their dislike of Raine, who they believed manipulated Johnny. I'm not so sure they felt the same way about their mother, though of course they loved her.

For instance was Frances's move to a remote part of the West of Scotland, when Diana was about eleven and Charles eight, helpful to her children being able to visit her often and easily, and ditto with the Australian sheep station? Or was it for her own convenience and to keep her husband happy?

Whereas Johnny was always there in school holidays, at wood Farm and then Althorp. Being always available physically and emotionally means a huge amount to children of divorced parents. I don't believe that Frances was naturally maternal in the way that Johnny was a loving father.

Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer says their mother Frances was not cut out for maternity | HELLO! (https://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2020091497121/charles-spencer-talks-mother-not-cut-out-for-maternity/)

Though I don't think it's fair for anyone to comment on someone's childhood as the person in question is more knowledgeable of course. However, I do think he comes across as misogynistic and this is of course just my opinion but i'm basing this on his comments.

Frances, from what I have read, promised Diana to come back and would have done just that had her husband and mother not testified against her in court. If he holds Frances absence against her, what then can be said about her ex-husband whose interference made her absence permanent? And if it took the combined efforts of her mother, husband and the misogynistic courts of the sixties to prevent Frances from gaining full custody then she couldn't have been that unmotherly. But this is just IMO

Diana was rightly suspicious of him and we only have Burrell's word for her depending on him and confiding in him, which doesn't amount to much IMO.

Why doesn't Frances get the benefit of the doubt? She might have made mistakes but she wasn't out of her childrens lives completely and even fought in court for them, twice I believe. And she was in Diana's will so obviously Diana was loyal and trusted her mothers opinion.

Earl Spencer has some nerve throwing those accusations around. What 'problems' did Diana have, besides bulimia? There is no credible source that points to any serious 'issues'. Having personal flaws doesn't constitute as mental illness.

Diana didn't always adore her father and neither did Charles.... At the time of Johnny's death, I believe that Char had had a barney with his father over a dispute about workmen on the estate... and Diana of course lashed out at her father and was angry with him for marrying Raine.. I agree that I dont think Frances was great at motherhood.. I think she tried her best but she wanted out of the marriage and if the price of it was loosing the children, she was willing to do that... but then she upset them or at least Diana by being weepy when they were meeting. I feel a bit sorry for her, but overall not a fan. I think that she did make it more difficult for the kids to visit her when she moved to Scotland.. Then later on, she was drinking and quarrelling with Diana - according to Di over her dating Muslim men.. and that set the scene for the final row....
I think that Di and Charles probalby were at least grateful to their father for being at home with them.. but then again, he did shut himself up a lot and sent them to school.  He tried to make up for the loss of their mother by spoiling them materally and letting them act up with their nannies....

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge says a new investigation into how the BBC secured an interview with his mother in 1995 is "a step in the right direction".

The BBC has promised to "get to the truth" about the events surrounding the Panorama interview with Princess Diana.

Diana's brother has alleged the BBC's Martin Bashir used forged bank statements to convince her to do it.

Kensington Palace said in a statement that Prince William "tentatively welcomed the investigation".

The prince, whose mother died in 1997, added: "The independent investigation is a step in the right direction.

"It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time."

Diana had a lot of problems. She suffered from depression and mood swiings, she was bulimic, she cut herself and possibly made some half hearted suicide attempts.  She was easily roused to suspicion of people, to the point of paranoia...
Diana didn't trust her mother.. She flared up very hotly over teh issue of Frances giving an interview about the HRH.. and refused to give her mother the benefit of the doubt....Frances made attempts to contact her in the last few months of her life but Diana wouldn't talk to her...And they had had rows before that,  Di disapproved strongly of heavy drinking and was cool with her mother when she began to drink.. and they rowed apparently about Di's dating Muslim men. I wouldn't take the Will too seriously as Diana was a young woman and probably didn't seriously think she would predecease her mother.. or she may simply have not thought about it at all. She had a lot going on at the time...

Diana didnt have 'a lot of problems'. She had ppd and her sadness and 'mood swings' was because she was trapped in a situation which she did not agree to. Her 'paranoia' stemmed from her marriage also because her husband was cheating on her and her surrounding was gaslighting her. This would upset anyone to say the very least. Even her psychologist, Dr. Lipsedge his name was I believe, said that there was nothing wrong with her and her problem stemmed from her marriage. Unfortunately men from her class tend to classify outspoken women who dare to stand up for themselves as 'crazy' and 'unpredictable'.

Diana did not distrust her mother. On the contrary, she trusted her so much that she specifically requested that her mother be counselled in the rearing of her sons should anything happen to her. She never changed this even when she froze Frances out. Says alot.

I don't believe Frances objected to Dianas dating life. For one, Diana was not on speaking terms with her when she started dating Fayed. Diana had dated Khan then for two years so why didnt Frances object earlier? Considering that the source came from Burrell, and Simmons mainly I think the sources are not very credible. I am sorry. And Khan is no shining beacon of morality himself.

The likely reason Diana did not speak to Frances was because Frances foolishly spoke to a magazine about her daughters divorce proceedings. This was irresponsible and could have jeopardised negotiations. This is what angered Diana. Diana obviously thought it was wise enough to write a will and if she had had enough of her mother certainly she would not leave it to chance and have her mother left in the will. She kept her there and that says alot. IMO. Meanwhile none of those people speaking out about Frances would have been in Dianas life permanently.

Besides the interview Frances gave where she said that Diana did not need her HRH, she never once betrayed Dianas trust and spoke about anything they discussed. She kept everything to herself. Frances was honorable and trustworthy inspite of the perception of her being a 'bolter' and a 'bad' mother. Something that cannot be said of the aforementioned people who had the gall to criticize her.

I've always loved Diana, whom I absolutely feel got a rotten deal when she became Charles's young fiancee, a girl not privy to Charles's unchanging feelings for another woman. I've always said that, regardless of pressure, Charles, knowing his feelings, should have remained a bachelor. So, obviously, I agree with many of your points.

I'm not so struck as you are though, on the constantly good relations between Diana and Frances. There were so many undercurrents there between them, love yes, but also decade old resentments, guilt perhaps on Frances' part, the unhappiness of both women in the private lives with cheating husbands (Shand Kydd and Charles) and many unresolved issues from all this that spilled over into their private lives. And Frances did drink heavily in her last years, exacerbating a lot of it.

The QM (yes her!) once said (before the marriage) that the Spencers as a family were 'difficult'. And there's no doubt that aristocratic families like the Bowes Lyons know about other such clans. And when you add the instability of the Roches to the hot temper etc of the Spencers, with both families having a history of intractability and stubbornness, there's a combination! Sparks flew in both Diana's and Frances's personal relationships. Not all the time, but regularly. Nothing was comfy cosy for years at a time.

Why do you say that Hasnet Khan was 'no beacon of morality himself', btw? I've never heard he was a womaniser or adulterer or anything.

Well I dont think that their relationship was without its problems as you also write. I do however think that the love they had for each other was deeper than any disagreements that they might have had. I am basing this on their own words and actions. Frances stood up for Diana and was very loyal even after she had passed away. There is no written credible account, none whatsoever, of Frances speaking in any way that might be considered disparaging of Diana. Now of course they did probably have their arguments in private. I also think that Diana had come to forgive Frances, just as she forgave Raine. The very fact that Diana had Frances in her will as someone who should be counselled with regards to the upbringing of her children, speaks volumes about Dianas estimation of her mother.

I never meant to imply that Khan was an adulterer. That would be unfair since there is no information out there regarding this. People accuse Frances of something of which there is no proof of, namely that she objected to Khans religion. I think Khan mentioned it also?  Khan, in the inquiry of Dianas death, if I remember correctly, said that Diana had acted strangely and thought the reason was her cheating or meeting someone else.  I thought that was in very poor taste to put forth a theory of which there was no basis. It came across as manipulative and a case of sour grapes. Diana might have discussed her some aspects of her relationship with her mother and other people close to her who might then have given their opinion.   So I meant to say that people who accuse others are no angels themselves and have agendas of their own. But this is just IMO.

The only other people who said similar things were Burrell who is simply not operating in reality and had a vendetta against Frances who testified against him, and Simmons who claimed that Diana slept with JFK jr and tried c-ke. Khan was and is more sly IMO.

Why do you say that Hasnet Khan was 'no beacon of morality himself', btw? I've never heard he was a womaniser or adulterer or anything.
I think its blindingly obvious that the relationship between Diana and her mother (AND the relationship with her father) was very volaitle...  full of rows and dramas and not speaking.  The Spencers ARE like that, but with Di it seemed a bit worse than average... I think its obvious that she tried to get over her childhood feeling of abandonment but she was  not able to do so and when she and Frances got angry, or seh felt that Frances was acting up, her childhood feelings bubbled up again and she felt the same anger and mis?ry that she had as a little girl when her mother walked out.  And Frances did drink heavily which Diana strongly disapproved of... and probably when she was drinking she said things that she might have refrained form if she hadn't been driniking...Possibly she didn't even remember them but I can well beleive that she did criticise Di for her affairs or because the men were foreigners or Muslims.. and Diana lashed out at her.

Khan was right in that Diana split up with him when she started seeing Dodi, that was what he said as I recall.. that she was acting strangely and he thought she mgiht have met someone else.  She had, Dodi, and she told him that, and he was shocked as well he might be that she'd gotten involved in the Fayed family..  I dont think you realize that they are not well thought of in the UK... and they certainly didn't look after Diana very well.
There's no evidence that Diana had forgiven her mother.  She did often fall out with people and refuse to take their calls but then sometimes she did get back with them but it was her calling them..   When Frances got the phone call to say that Di had been in an accident she said that she had hoped it was her daughter calling to make up the quarrel... but it was a friend calling to say that Diana was injured. If Di had forgiven her mother I'm sure she would have called her up and made things up or just started talking again but she didn't. She may not have thought of her WIll, which had been made a while before... and which was probably something she had been advised to do.. She was very young to think of dying, and she had probably been advised that she ought to have a will in place just in case she did die prematurely, I would say she didn't really consider taking her mother out of it.. because, she didn't think too much about it.
Sadly I think at the end of her life, she hadn't mended fences wiht her mother.. and Frances lost her with no reconcilation.

Diana had moved on and that was entirely her right. Her acting 'strangely' is merely his interpretation and he comes across as manipulative but masquerades as caring. Diana is not here to tell her side of the story. However, her actions are very clear. She moved on from Khan even quicker than Hewitt, and even prince Charles. I don't think leaving that relationship was a loss for Diana. She seemed happy and enjoying herself which leads me to believe she made the right decision.

Diana and her family had known the Fayeds for over a decade and MAF even held charities where the RF attended so their reputation couldn't have been all that bad. Khan must've known that Diana knew them for a long time. His remarks only came after Diana had begun to date Dodi which I believe affected his ego and was the reason for his unkind remarks.
Who was Khan to make judgement on someone else?

Diana was well taken care of during that vacation. She was with them for weeks and nothing remotely bad had happened except for that fateful night which was an accident.

I meant that Diana had forgiven Frances for her childhood. Diana not speaking temporarily to Frances was not an issue. She would have contacted her eventually. I don't believe that Frances was an angel and  I think she made many mistakes. However, I truly believe that she loved all her children deeply and had Dianas best interest at heart. I think Diana valued her counsel and would definetly have reached out again.

Diana may have been happy with Dodi Fayed for a week or 2 but how happy was she going to be with a man who was not just seeing but engaged to another woman?  According to people who sympathise with her she had already experienced a marriage to a man who had deep feelings for another woman where he ended up in an affair with her.. and that didn't work out well, did it?  Dodi was at best a silly weak man who had had no career, no success in his life and led an aimless playboy existence.  That might be fun for a few weeks to have a man who had plenty of time and money to take her on holidays... but the evidence about their relationship shows Diana as very ambivalent about him and about their affair, more than once telling people that it was just a light summer fling.. and that she didn't intend it to be serious..
She wasn't "well taken care of".  In spite of all MAFs money, he didn't spend enough on bodyguards to keep the press away, and Dodi messed the bodyguards around with his stupid plans.. so that they couldn't do their job properly.  I'd hardly say that an affiar that only lasted about 5 weeks went well or that Diana was taken care of, when it ended with the tragic death of 3 people.. MAF didn't look after his son's girlfriend at all well...
THey had a few weeks of fun, but the last days of the holiday were not that happy with the press bothering them, and with Dodi messing around.. and then it ended in tragedy.. How on earth could that be evidence that the Fayeds took care of Diana?
Khan was right to believe that Diana's reputation would be affected by her relationship.. MAF had a bad reputation as dishonest and sleazy, and when she took holidays from him, she did begin to get criticism.   When she started to Date Dodi, at first the press and many of the public were pleased to see her out having fun with a man.. because nothing was known of Dodi at the time... but before long it emerged that Dodi was a far from satisfactory character and she got  criticism for getting herself involved with the family..
As for Frances, yes of course Diana would probably have spoken to her again.  Very few people completely break up with their mother permanently.  But their relationship was not a very solid one and was marred by tension and unease.  Diana had forgiven her for her desertion in childhood in theory, but in practice when Di was upset, she reverted to the lonely frightened little girl who was sitting at home waiting for her mother to come back and she got angry and upset.  Then she lashed out at her mother.  They had been non speakers for about 4 months over what wasn't that big a deal..and there was no sign of them making up.  Frances had tried to get in touch with her again but had not been able to because Diana had refused to take her calls...

Dodi left his fianc?e for Diana and he did have a job as a movie producer.

Going on a vacation with family and someone she dated would not affect her reputation. She is still beloved til this day. What would affect her reputation was if she had stayed with a man that was not interested in solidating a relationship. But who instead was fine with seeing Diana indefinetly in secrecy. That would be crass, and in very poor taste to carry on in this manner. Like I said, it was sour grapes on Khans part. Diana had already moved on.

Diana was rightfully upset when Frances spoke about Dianas divorce. She would have spoken to Frances again and their relationship was indeed strong if Diana chose her mother alongside Sarah to be counselled in matters concerning her children. Frances never betrayed Dianas trust after her passing away and was loyal all her remaning years towards Diana.

OK I think there's no point in going on is there?  I've more than once pointed out that Di's affiar with Dodi and her open friendship with the Fayeds DID damage her reputation at the time. and that Dodi didn't have a job.. and that he ditched his fiancee at the clicks of his father's fingers, to pursue a romance with Diana  - that probably would have ended in a few weeks as she got fed up with him.  You obviously dont want to believe that Dodi was a far from satisfactory character and that Khan is the bad guy..
So Im done ....
Re Frances Diana's relationship with her obviously wasn't very strong when  they were rowing over Diana's boyfriends and when Di could turn against her mother over an interview, having said that , Frances knew that Diana was upset over losing the HRH, and so it was stupid and tactless of her to say in an interview that it was for the best....

First of all, I would like to ask you to not put words into my mouth. How you interpret what I write is entirely up to you but don't write a statement in black and white and equal it to what I posted.

I have not written anything that elevated Fayed to a saintly character and Khan to a 'bad guy'. To summarize it as such is patently untrue. First of all, it is perfectly legitimate to criticize someone for their words and actions without painting them as 'bad'. I have also previously criticized Fayed and his intentions. I suspect to critize these men must be difficult because then it might absolve Diana of blame that she might not have deserved in the first place.

I was also pointing out that Diana is still loved more than two decades after her death. Whatever criticism she received was therefore shallow and probably hyped up by the media who lack a moral compass IMO.

Frances made a mistake which she payed for. Rightfully. There is no evidence that Diana would have stop speaking to her forever. People argue and make mistakes. It's human nature.

The queen didn't care WHAT Diana did, she was no longer a member of the RF.  She could date whom she wanted.
And this interview with Bashir DID push Diana out of the RF, since she was foolish enough to comment on the succession and to show hostility towards the RF....It was ultimately Di's choice to do the interview but Bashir's behaviour was still appalling.  He played on her paranoia, and made her feel more alienated from and suspicious of the RF and more willing to do something that would finally cut the cord with the RF.. and then she was reliant on herself.. and depending on rich friends to look after her, in matters of security...

No, I dont think HM cared who Diana dated. That was entirely Dianas business.

It wasnt the interview itself that 'pushed' Diana out of the RF. It was the back and forth between her and her ex-husband. Perhaps HM didn't want that to continue so she drew the line there.

What hostility did she show? She mostly tried to clear her name if I remember the transcripts correctly. She gave her general opinion on the effect the 'top job' would have on PC iirc.

How did he play on her 'paranoia'? The verdict is still out and Bashir needs to explain himself. That does not mean I think he's a saint, mind you. And Diana has been portrayed in negative ways after her passing and there were leaks against her before, so I wouldn't directly classify it as paranoia.

Diana was not 'paranoic' and 'easily prone to believe all sorts of things'. We do not know that she believed that Edward and HM were ill. She might have based her decision for doing the interview on other factors. Diana is not here to confirm or deny, so it's all hearsay as far as I'm concerned.

The interview was not a 'disaster'. It got her point across, and made it more difficult for people who were bent on shaping the narrative by portraying her in a certain way.

HM ordered the divorce because she was perhaps afraid of there being a back and forth. And she wasn't 'severed completely' from the RF. She was the mother to a future king and was invited to anything that had to do with Prince William and Harry. She even kept her home in Kensington Palace and carried on with her work.

Isn't it easier to sue someone in the UK for libel? He's probably afraid people are emboldened to do so.

To be honest, journalism in the UK does not seem to be bound by morals, put it that way.

Wasn't it Piers Morgans magazine, when he was an editor, that hacked phones of victims? Or am I mistaken? Yet this man is still allowed to be on air and pontificate. Honestly. It boggles the mind. But then, most people in his profession are no paragons of virtue, sadly.

No indeed, Oak, journalists certainly aren't paragons of virtue. And Piers Morgan is a prime example of that. An ancient but interesting article from the Guardian addresses the phone hacking, which Morgan has always denied he had a hand in, and his other 'professional' activities. It's written by a fellow journalist who knows him well.

And another delightful Press tactic...

Karen Daynes, consultant forensic psychologist who often appears in the media, previously told Insider that she has been asked questions designed to achieve a negative and misleading response about Markle.

"I have been asked (by British, more right-wing media) to comment on Harry and Meghan in my capacity as an expert in coercive control," Daynes told Insider.

"I have been asked leading questions along the lines of, 'Can you confirm that isolating someone from their family is a tactic used by controlling partners?'"

Im not entirely sure I believe Khan tbh. Ive read the interview and it sounds like he's speaking for Diana if that makes sense.

This is just my opinion but the way I see it is him saying Diana was vulnerable and Bashir took advantage of that vulnerability. She might have based her decisions on other factors and decided to do the interview based on those reasons. Again, and I must reiterate that this is my personal opinion and I can be wrong, but this to me is talk similar to what he's said before, and I think his image of Diana was her being emotional, vulnerable and instinctive. It almost comes across as her being portrayed at excelling at the emotional but lacking in the 'intellectual' if that makes sense.

One other thing I find slightly interesting is him claiming her reasoning was that PC had made an interview with Dimbleby and thus she was also entitled to do one. And his response was 'two wrongs don't make a right'. I personally believe that he might have misunderstood her explanation. If one looks back, Diana was 'leaked against' for the better part of a decade with all sorts of insinuations towards her. She only began to fight back with the Morton book. The Dimbleby interview with it's revelations set things on a whole other course and Diana was perfectly within her right to make a response to that. Had she not made the Panorama interview the slander against her might have escalated, as it did after her passing. Him not thinking from that POV indicates a shallowness IMO.

To me, it almost seems like he's portraying himself as being the one being mature and logical and talking sense to Diana. I think Diana was a logical, intelligent person who was capable of thinking things through and doing a thorough analysis and planning. She would not have been able to survive and excell for almost 20 years in her situation and enviroment had she not.  This is just an conclusion on my part and my personal opinion but I think Diana also had begun to see through Khan and his perception of her as time went on. This might be slightly arrogant of me to assume, but I will go ahead and do so anyway, seeing as this is a discussion board and we can discuss our opinions (provided that we do so in a respectful manner) but I don't think he knew Diana all that well. 23 years after her passing and he still speaks of her in what I would like to call an almost dismissive tone.

Its difficult to explain but if one took his words at their surface value he comes across as someone stellar, it's only when you read his statements a bit more carefully that they become a bit more suspicious. And repetitive, with him always trying to be reasonable while Diana was not. He did the same thing in the 2007 inquiry where he claimed that he knew Diana so well as to know that she had 'acted strangely' and surmised that the reason might have been her cheating. First he speculated about it being the bodyguard if I remember correctly. It simply cannot have been that she had had enough of the relationship going nowhere and deciding to move on. She might have not have been that in love by then at all, but this is just IMO and I obviously cannot speak for Diana. However, her moving on so quickly does lend some credibility to this claim.

Though Khan was a part of her life and should of course give his opinion, at the end of the day only Diana can speak up and confirm or deny. And shes not here to do so.

I was also a bit surprised at W and H keeping in touch with him but that's how it's done in those circles I suppose.

I will also add one more thing, I think Diana was not just clever but genuinely intelligent. More so than Dr. Khan IMO. There's something about him that doesn't sit right with me. I don't know how to explain it, but  he comes across as a bit calculated IMO with his wordings, slightly 'artistic' with his words if I can put it that way, a bit slick. Don't know how else to put it. And I wouldn't be surprised if Diana was eventually on to him. But this of course IMO. I could be wrong.

Khan sounds very clueless about her life and motives. Barbara Walters is quoted in several Diana bios, she undertands that Diana was looking for a reporter to give a interview for some time before november 1995.

iirc she says diana asked her a lot of questions about the behind the scenes of a interview. what was the ideal clothing, make-up etc

To me, It's obvious that Diana was no victim of Bashir. If her sons dont understand or support her motives, it's their business. But they shouldnt (want) rewrite her story.

How for Khan her then boyfriend dont being supportive of her motives being aware of all she went through looks very bad imo. Problably he prefered there was no interview then Diana would have keep their relationship secret forever

Diana's relationship with Khan had nothing to do with the interview.  Diana may have wanted a platform to put forward her point of view but she was (a) not very stable and it was a bad idea and (b) she was lied to by Bashir, who pressed her into the interview by teling her lies and feeding her paranoia. And the interview pushed the queen to order a divorce and created a final alienation between Diana and the RF..

I agree, @dianab .

I don't think Diana was a fool. I think she knew what she was doing. And her sons I think don't see her viewpoint. Not the same outlook I guess.

I think this is a way for Khan to put his own spin out there. I wouldn't necessarily put much trust in his version, or in his intentions to be completely honest.

But this is all just in my opinion.

If diana knew waht she was doing, how come she seemed very surprised and angry when the queen ordered a divorce?  She was not IMO expecting that at all.. and yet once she had said the explosives' things she did, she had cut herself off completely from any kind of relationship with the RF and divorce was inevitable.  of course her sons didn't want her to end up with a divorce which left her completely alienated from their birth family and on bad terms with them..  It led to the whole scenario of her cutting off from people who might disapprove of her at times but who didn't want her to put herself in danger...and she unfortunately ended depedning on all sorts of random people to advise her and provide her with security

Being surprised and angry at a divorce does not mean she did not know what she was doing.

Diana did not depend on random people.
Title: Re: The 1995 Panorama Interview and the Investigation into the BBC

Why would she be surprised and angry at the divorce, when her actions had seemed to provoke it?  She and Charles had both admitted to affairs, they were clearly unable to stay married.. and she had questioned the succession.  The queen had tried to keep them formally married but she was not going to do that when Diana had questioned the succession, which is laid down by parliament...
She clealry did depend on random people though many of them warned her against doing that interview and she went ahead and did it anyway...

Alot of the same people that supposedly warned her of doing that interview or disapproved of it turned out to be untrustworthy anyway. Jephson, Warfe etc. Lots of people afraid of the gravy train stopping. This included people in her personal life. imo. Lot of individuals with their own self interest, as evidenced to this day, where they see it fit to chime in on different occasions. Diana is not here to give her side of the story. I would take what others have said with a pinch of salt.

Yes HM Queen order divorce in taboilds and HM Queen makes decisions is finalized for stripped HRH but Diana is no longer members of royal family but HM Queen says Diana will know as Diana,Princess of Wales or Princess Diana in public but Diana is mother of future King of England expect Duke of Cambridge know as Prince William but William will become King one day after his dad and Grandmother the Queen Elizabeth II

From the BBC article.

QuoteThe BBC investigation is looking at the steps Bashir and the corporation took to secure the interview.

Lord Dyson, who was Master of the Rolls - the second most senior judge in England and Wales - for four years until he retired in October 2016, is leading the probe.

The BBC said it was handing over "all of its relevant records" to him.

It has revealed that a previously missing note from Diana, thought to indicate she was happy with the way her interview by BBC Panorama was obtained, had been found.

If the late Diana, Princess of Wales indicated that she was content and/or pleased with how the interview was obtained then I can see why there won't be an investigation.

but it doesn't alter the fact that she was lied to and manipulated into the interview. I think she would have spoken to SOMEONE on TV abut her marriage around that time.. so there was no need to play dirty tricks and to increase her paranonia...

As well as Dianas sons, the BBC has also written apologies to Prince Charles and Earl Spencer. It is also returning all awards the interview received, including a TV Bafta won in 1996.

Wow! This is truly shocking news but I'm glad that the BBC is taking the steps to apologize and return any BAFTA related awards from the Panorama Interview. Good to see that the Wales brothers, the PoW and Earl Spencer are receiving these apology notes, though IMO Lady Sarah and Lady Jane deserve them as well.

Isn't it a bit of an exaggeration of Earl Spencer to blame Bashir for Diana's death?

And why would the bbc apologize to prince Charles for?

Tehy told all sorts of lies to Diana bout the RF, to provoke her into agreeing to the interview...  so why shouldn't they apologise to the people they lied about.

One of the fake claims that was made by the BBC   <_< was that the PoW was having an affair with Tiggy Legge-Bourke which we do know that Diana believed to be true.

As to the Earl Spencer, he was the one who helped the BBC gain access to Diana after he was presented with false information. Charles Spencer was shown fake bank statements alleging  that some of her staff ie: Patrick Jephson was being paid to keep surveillance on her.

QuoteWhat did Diana's brother allege?

Earl Spencer claimed that in the weeks before the programme, Mr Bashir showed him forged bank statements that related to alleged payments made to his sister's former private secretary Patrick Jephson and another former royal household member by the security services.

The documents falsely suggested the individuals were being paid for keeping the princess under surveillance.

So I can understand why the BBC is apologizing to the PoW and Earl Spencer. IMO they owe an apology to Prince Edward too after claiming he was receiving treatment for AIDS.

Glad to see that the Wales brothers have each released their own statements. How awful for those involved who were hurt and deceived by the BBC.

William had been Diana's confidante for years and was more aware of her emotional state and the breakdown of his parents' relationship.  Sadly the Panorama interview had a devastating effect on his relationship with his mother. How awful it must have been for him to have witnessed Diana's paranoia exacerbated by this information.

While I believe that Harry due to his age had been more sheltered by his parents, this deception obviously had a troubling effect upon his mother's behavior during those years. This just made the situation worse for all of those living in Apartments 8 & 9 at Kensington Palace.

It's hard to keep up with digital media. Nine hours ago, the above was front page news in the UK; all had William's speech/statement about Diana, minus one who had Diana and Bashir picture and story (The Guardian).

Nine hours later, it's Harry's shenanigans as front page news.

I used to check the Paperboy website, I'm a bit nostalgic with newspapers, but we are in the digital era, so moving on since a few years ago.

I thought Prince William's "speech" was right to the point and he said what needed to be said.  I also think that this revelation serves to underline the danger that famous people are in from those who want to use them.  We can add her name to the list, and it is such a shame.  Above all else she was a mother, a very good mother, and by hurting her they hurt her sons.

yes, she was very badly treated.  The trouble is htat she was very keen to talk publicly and it made her more eager to say her say when she met Bashir.  Had she been less eager to do an interivew she might not have been so ready to go ahead and to speak far too openly.  I think she was angry that Charles had admitted to an affair and that she herself wanted a chance to say that she had had a lover as well, that she had had men who found her attractive, even if her husband didn't find her that attractive.
but none of that excuses Bashir.  She would possibly have done an interview with no persuasion..but he wanted to be sure she would talk to him and that she'd say very dramatic things.  So he pushed her buttons, knowing that she was volatile and paranoid.. and by doing so, he put silly ideas in her head which caused problems for her, such as the Tiggy row.
Its distressing to see how vulnerable she was, and how easily she fell into Bashir's trap..

The BBC hopes to make amends for the Martin Bashir scandal by paying about GBP1.5 million guilt money to a charity chosen by the Royal Family, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. The unprecedented donation includes GBP 1.15 million, the amount the Corporation made from selling the global rights to Bashir's explosive Princess Diana interview , plus reparations.

The moneys will go to a charity chosen by Charles, William and Harry. The reparations are still to be negotiated.

Princess Diana believed 75% of the profits of her interview with Martin Bashir would be donated  | Daily Mail Online (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9915557/Princess-Diana-believed-75-profits-interview-Martin-Bashir-donated.html)

QuotePrincess Diana believed that 75 per cent of the profits from her Panorama interview with Martin Bashir should go to charity, The Mail on Sunday has learned.

It comes as pressure mounted on the BBC last night to confirm the timing and details of when the profits from the 1995 interview would be donated to a charity chosen by the Royal Family.

The issue of a donation was first raised by Diana and it is understood that negotiations were ongoing just before the interview was shown.

Diana had hoped for a similar agreement to that struck between Prince Charles and ITV the previous year. But, in Diana?s case, the BBC refused to honour her wish.

Yes it's the DM but if this turns out to be true, then IMO it's further proof of the BBC's despicable behavior towards Diana.

I really don?t see why Jephson would receive ?enormous damages? because of the Bashir interview. Diana didn?t inform him of the proposal by Bashir that she give her side of the story, and so potentially muddied the waters between himself and the Palace old guard. However, apart from the humiliation, Jephson didn?t really suffer any lasting damage. He had decided to resign following the Tiggy incident, which seems to have shocked him deeply, (I have a copy of Shadows of a Princess on my kindle.)

This just speeded up the process, though he did go with her on her trip to Argentina. So did her Press Secretary who also resigned. Jephson seems in fact to have immediately decided to cover his own butt regarding the interview pretty well as soon as he knew that the interview was going ahead, understandable in a man who knew that the Palace held all the aces. For instance he rang the Queen?s PS and explained his position as soon as possible.

Martin Bashir invented a litany of lies about the ex-Naval officer that Diana no longer trusted her right-hand man and came to doubt his loyalty.

The BBC did the right thing by granting him payment damages for GBP 100K.

Of course Bashir?s poisonous barbs didn?t help. Personally though, I think she doubted her PS?s loyalty when he made it clear that in his opinion the Tiggy remarks were uncalled for. However the BBC is entitled to grant Jephson a sum for his ?pain and suffering?. A sum which almost certainly comes from the British taxpayer, let?s not forget.

Regarding the remarks that Diana made to Tiggy  in a public setting regarding the alleged abortion were definitely uncalled for and did land Diana in legal hot water with the Legge-Bourke family. I believe that knowing Diana had left herself open to being sued  is why Jephson made his opinion known to his employer.   However  I'm pleased to see that the entire sum of his payout from the BBC was given to the Welsh children's hospice. Diana's association with the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice ended with her death but Charles has taken it on now.

I dont like Jephson but I think that he was increasingly wary of Diana, who was leaving messages on his phone and acting very oddly.. so I think that it was understandable that he would part company with her and tell her that she was going to get herself in hot water, with things like the remarks to Tiggy and the Panorama interview.
William has said that at that time, Diana was paranoid already, and becoming more so thanks to Bashir's disgraceful behaviour.

BBC to pay ?substantial? damages to William and Harry?s former nanny
Alexandra Pettifer, previously known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, appeared at the High Court in London for a public apology from the broadcaster.

BBC to pay ?substantial? damages to William and Harry?s former nanny | Evening Standard (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/bbc-diana-wales-princess-high-court-b1013799.html)

The BBC apology to Tiggy Legge-Bourke in full
'Following publication of the Dyson Report last year we have been working with those who suffered as a result of the deceitful tactics used by the BBC in pursuit of its interview with Diana, Princess of Wales for the Panorama programme in 1995, including the matters that were mentioned in court today in respect of Miss Tiggy Legge-Bourke, now Mrs Alexandra Pettifer.

'The BBC has agreed to pay substantial damages to Mrs Pettifer and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise publicly to her, to the Prince of Wales, and to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, for the way in which Princess Diana was deceived and the subsequent impact on all their lives.

'It is a matter of great regret that the BBC did not get to the facts in the immediate aftermath of the programme when there were warning signs that the interview might have been obtained improperly. Instead, as the Duke of Cambridge himself put it, the BBC failed to ask the tough questions.

'Had we done our job properly Princess Diana would have known the truth during her lifetime. We let her, the royal family and our audiences down.

'Now we know about the shocking way that the interview was obtained I have decided that the BBC will never show the programme again; nor will we licence it in whole or part to other broadcasters.

'It does of course remain part of the historical record and there may be occasions in the future when it will be justified for the BBC to use short extracts for journalistic purposes, but these will be few and far between and will need to be agreed at executive committee level and set in the full context of what we now know about the way the interview was obtained. I would urge others to exercise similar restraint.'

I'm very pleased to see that Tiggy will be receiving a substantial payment from the BBC. She didn't deserve to be treated in this manner at all.

I recall that one of Prince William's requests in his statement regarding the Panorama interview that the program never be aired again. I can understand that there will be the occasional excerpt released but with an explanation as to how the interview was obtained.

At that point the relationship most likely could never have been saved, anyway, so I agree it was ridiculous to think the interview made it significantly worse. However, after it aired a separation and divorce were inevitable.  That is probably what he meant.  I can also understand his anger - and he loves both his parents, so it's understandable to me that the unfair picture she painted of his father affected him badly.

How much more evidence do people need that Diana was conned by Martin to do the interview, his questions were based on the 'conning' he did to her.  He should be behind bars or home arrest since the BBC is saying he's got a sickness.

Guily as sin, they (BBC) wouldn't be paying out Charles, William, Harry, the Nanny.

Harry want's to cover/save/excuse his own infamous ill advised trashing the family interview, replicating and destroying is very strong.

yes Bashir did push diana to talk by scaring her and he got her to say wild things by telling her a load of lies, backed up by forgeries. She would not have said the wild things she said about Tiggy, probalby without Bashir lying and tellng her that Ch was having an affair with Tiggy.  William is quite right that the fears and paranoia in Diana were clealry made worse by Bashir pushing her and lying to her, and that they made her more unhappy and made his parents' relationship even worse, because Di was increasingly isolated from the RF and did not trust anyone there....

The seven charities that will be receiving donations from the BBC are the late Diana, Princess of Wales former charities. (I would prefer though that it wasn't from the licensing fees that the national broadcaster takes in but rather from Martin Bashir and other BBC producers personal income.)  Prince William has taken over the patronage of one charity, Centrepoint.

All is well on the BBC donation front. The Corporation announced that the money donated to the seven charities will be coming from its commercial enterprises not from licence fees.
