It was very honorable of Anne and James to name their first son Charles after James' brother, King Charles II. Unfortunately Charles, Duke of Cambridge died when he was seven months old.

The public affection Prince James, Duke of York showed toward Anne, such as kissing, was considered improper behavior from man to wife during the seventeenth century.

Anne Hyde became a lady-in-waiting to Mary Stuart, Princess of Orange. Princess Mary's brother James, Duke of York married Anne. Mary found it offensive that her former lady-in-waiting was married to her brother.
