QuoteDuchess of Cambridge's Date with van Dyck Boosts Bid to Save £12.5M Work for Nation
The Duchess of Cambridge has enjoyed a special viewing of a £12.5 million painting the National Portrait Gallery has just been given five more months to save.
She was shown the Sir Anthony van Dyck self-portrait during a gala dinner. Today the gallery revealed the Government has extended a temporary export ban on the painting.
The work by the 17th-century court artist has been in British private collections for nearly 400 years, but has been sold to a buyer who wants to take it abroad. Raising enough money to match the price is the only chance a British gallery has of acquiring it.

She's the patron of the National Portrait Gallery, perhaps they believe her name will bring in more donations. That's what organizations and charities want Royal patrons for, anyway ... that name on their letterhead. I can understand the NPG's concern about the painting leaving the country, but doesn't the new owner have the right to do whatever he/she wants with it, including taking it out of the country? Or is there a special clause in the sales contract when a treasure like this is sold?
Cindy
The government can impose an export ban on objects considered of importance to the nation.
There is a committee in parliament that oversees this; The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest
But even by just viewing the painting, its getting a lot of publicity and that's part of Kate's job as patron of the NPG, to draw attention to issues like this.
Thanks for the explanation, Princess!
It drew publicity for the people who pay close attention to these sorts of things. I don't think they expect that the general public, those of us who don't normally keep track of individual paintings and whether or not they're sold, to get behind this cause. The general public usually only pays attention when a painting sells for something like $155M.

QuoteA self-portrait of Sir Anthony van Dyck could remain in Britain after the withdrawal of its buyer – the son-in-law of Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.
Financier James Stunt, who is married to Mr Ecclestone's daughter Petra, said he pulled out of the purchase in 'light of the people's passion' to keep it in the UK.
The artwork, dating back to 1640, had been destined for his LA home but a fundraising campaign called for it to stay in Britain.

Kate Middleton will make her official debut as an art curator later this month.
Using her art history degree from University of St. Andrews, the Duchess of Cambridge selected images for an upcoming exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) called ?Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography.? The show that opens in London on March 1 highlights the work of four early photography masters: Julia Margaret Cameron, Oscar Rejlander, Clementina Hawarden, and Lewis Carroll.
Yes, that Lewis Carroll. Middleton?s undergraduate thesis??Angels From Heaven: Lewis Carroll?s Photographic Interpretation of Childhood??explored the vast, under-appreciated photography portfolio by the Alice and Wonderland author, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

Love, love love the work of Victorian photographers, Julia Margaret Cameron and Lutwidge Dodgson included. The National Gallery is a wonderful place.
I've seen some of these at a travelling exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria years ago. Breathtaking, especially when you consider what a performance it was to develop wet plates before 1880. I remember reading about Julia Margaret being overcome by some cyanide fumes one day and a couple of her sons had to walk her around so she didn't lose consciousness.
^^^ Thank you for sharing your experience
@Curryong. I've read about the Victorian practice of taking a photo with their recently deceased family members as a means of capturing one last memory of their loved ones. The dead sometimes had "eyes" painted upon their eyelids to give the impression that they were still alive. I hadn't read about the background information regarding the toxic chemicals used during that era in order to produce prints, so I thank you for the information. I have to wonder if the length of time required for the subjects to hold their pose might have meant that some of them could have been affected by the fumes as well.

QuoteHer Majesty The Queen has passed the patronage to The Duchess after having held the role for 67 years. The new patronage has been announced ahead of Her Royal Highness's visit to a photography workshop run by The Royal Photographic Society and Action for Children, which is another of The Duchess?s patronages.
Her Royal Highness will join children from Action for Children in several sessions, run with Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellows Jillian Edelstein and Harry Borden, that will cover various elements of photography such as portraits, light and colour. Alongside developing new skills, the workshop will highlight how photography provides a universal language for young people to express themselves and release their thoughts and feelings.
The Duchess has a longstanding interest in photography, and this patronage will further highlight the beneficial impact that art and creativity can have on emotional wellbeing, particularly for children and young people.

Yes it is an amazing place. I so enjoy museums with an extensive collection.
Great casual, fall outfit for today's engagement. Good to see Catherine experimenting with new looks.
The culottes looked too much like "polyester." Somehow to me this look does not suit her.
:D that would be because they are made of polyester.

:hehe: Well any time a member of a royal family has appeared in a track suit, sports jersey, swimsuit, and most modern day active wear they have probably worn polyester. :hehe:

It's on my bucket list after these posts...as I imagine her visit will do for a lot of other folks. Regarding her outfit, one thing I've noticed that never wavers about her style is that her clothes always fit well. Unless it is a loose fitting design, the clothes always fit close to her figure, but never too tight. I love the scalloped neck and sleeves, as well as the color, but it's already sold out.

well Im not crazy about her clothes in that there's no special quality about them..but OTOH she rarely dresses unitdy? From what I remember of culottes when I was a kid, they were bigger and baggier than what K is wearing..which do indeed look nice and fit well. She rarely jars the eye with her clothes
I found the culottes not matching the top and not a good look for her at all. She also needs to get a hair trim (not short) and cut the stray ends. It also emphasizes too much just how thin she is which is not a good thing since she needs to put on some weight.

Yes I agree. She does take the fit into consideration when she selects her outfits. It is a shame that the plum/berry sweater/jumper is already sold out.
There are prettier sweaters and jumpers besides the ones Kate wears. I don't buy because a celebrity wears something. Not my thing.
Both colours are very autumn/winter, I do like the combo. Also her new lighter hair colouring very likely hides for more time any gray and highlights her green eyes.

I JUST REALIZED IT WAS EUGENIE RATHER THAN BEA....If one was to believe there was any kind of enmity/apathy during Kate's roller blading days :D the 2 ladies or supposedly Bea grew out of it. I blame her 10 years ex boyfriend, what's his name. Going back, he had received the invite and forgot to tell her the theme. So true or false Katie Nicholl story, the child tantrum is over and out.
In reference to the project, I also support it. Someone with the power, it has always been this way, except the cave times of preserved wall chiseling/hand painting for posterity/history education and since technology discovery and history channels...as I said people with power have the structure to 'preserve' moments of the study of the past, historical events, especially human affairs.

And it should be preserved. Consider the iconic photos taken throughout world wide events ie Times' Square kiss photo after VE day and the many photos from 9/11. These are a part of our collective human memory know.
Europe's plague monuments or houses of worship that were built to show gratitude for surviving an epidemic still stand in many places.
Lovely to see Princess Eugenie supporting this project especially since she works in the art world.

?The Duchess of Cambridge and I were inspired to see how the photographs have captured the resilience of the British people at such a challenging time, whether that is through celebrating frontline workers, recognising community spirit or showing the efforts of individuals supporting those in need.

KFC pokes fun at the Duke of Cambridge ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/cambridge/kfc-pokes-fun-at-the-duke-of-cambridge-151635/)
QuoteThis year has had a lot of unprecedented events. Those events may have led some to look for a laugh or indulge in their favourite comfort food. So why not combine the two?
On Tuesday, the Duke of Cambridge accompanied his wife at an appearance in London to meet with some of the finalists of the Duchess of Cambridge?s Hold Still photo project. Hold Still is a community project to make a unique collective portrait of the UK during the lockdown.
On their way to the event, the Duke was seen peering into the window of a KFC restaurant. The popular chain decided to have a little fun with the Duke?s curiosity tweeting a photo along with the caption:
?William whispered quietly to himself;
Oh, I just can?t wait to be wing!?
A play on words of the famous song ?I Just Can?t Wait to be King? from the 1990s Disney film, The Lion King.
The chicken chain then followed up with another tweet: ?I?m sad I didn?t call him His Royal Thighness in the main tweet tbh.?
The Duke?s love of chicken has never been a secret. In past comments, the Duke said a roast chicken is his favourite thing to cook. He is also a fan of Nando?s, a South African restaurant chain that specialises in peri-peri style chicken.
More photos from "Hold Still" are now installed around the UK and the subjects are seen posing next to them.

QuoteThe Duchess of Cambridge has marked the end of the Hold Still community exhibit with a video message thanking all those who submitted images for the project to highlight the United Kingdom during the first COVID-19 lockdown.
Hold Still was a project that invited people of all ages from across the UK to submit photos they had taken during the lockdown. The Duchess and the judging panel selected the final 100 images in July via a video call. Upon the revealing of the selected 100 portraits, The Queen released a message in support of the initiative and congratulated those who had their photograph chosen as one of the final 100.
The Duchess said she launched the project in May with the National Portrait Gallery because ?I wanted to find a way to allow everyone to share their stories and experiences of lockdown.?
She added that she was thrilled with the 31,000 submissions and grateful for all the participation.

*We have been thrilled by the response to the project and I couldn?t be more grateful to each and every one of the 31,000 people who submitted an image,* Kate said.
The Hold Still digital exhibition has had more than 5.2 million page views to date, and the final 100 images have also been displayed on billboards and outdoor poster sites across the UK.

A personal tweet from Kate announcing Hold Still, the book.
QuoteWhen we look back at the COVID-19 pandemic in decades to come, we will think of the challenges we all faced - the loved ones we lost, the extended isolation from our families and friends and the strain placed on our key workers.
But we will also remember the positives: the incredible acts of kindness, the helpers and heroes who emerged from all walks of life, and how together we adapted to a new normal.
Through Hold Still, I wanted to use the power of photography to create a lasting record of what we were all experiencing - to capture individuals stories and document significant moments for families and communities as we lived through the pandemic. C

The Duchess of Cambridge has today visited The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, to hear about how art helps improve the experience of being in hospital and to offer her personal thanks to our staff.
The visit was to mark the publication of Hold Still: A Portrait of Our Nation in 2020 , part of a photography project, launched by The Duchess and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) last year, which aimed to create a unique collective portrait of the UK during lockdown.
I love that the "book faeries" are leaving a copy of "Hold Still" in sites around the UK. What a marvelous opportunity for people in the community to discover the talented photographers who contributed to this book.

What an honor for Catherine and she has over time developed an eye for photography. You can see it in all the pictures she takes of the children and William. In time Catherine has learned the job of a royal lady and took it to heart and made it her own, balancing the job with her family...a wonderful future queen consort in the making! :blowkiss:
