Filippo Juvara of Italy was selected to design the palace. All of the construction was vaulted in stone and brick.

My niece saw it in July. It's very impressive. All the same, it's quite understandable that modern royals dont want to live there. Even with a full Royal Household plus servants and a large family King Alfonzo and Queen Ena must have felt as if they were rattling around in a huge mausoleum. Impossible to light or heat properly in the winter, a journey if you wanted to visit the nurseries spur  of the moment.

The Royal Palace is Madrid's largest building.
