Students and staff welcomed His Royal Highness Prince Charles to the University of Essex when he arrived to visit the Big Bang Fair being hosted at the Colchester Campus in partnership with Engineering UK.

His Royal Highness stopped to speak to the crowds as he walked to the event with the Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Forster and Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant, Lord Petre, after arriving by helicopter.

Outside the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall, His Royal Highness was presented to a number of dignitaries including:

The years may have rolled by but the Prince of Wales has shown he still has the reactions that made him a Navy pilot.

When he came across a machine normally used to train the hand-eye co-ordination of athletes, during a visit to a engineering fair for teenagers, Charles sprang into action.

Despite wearing his trademark double-breasted suit, he stretched quickly to the right and then left, tapping out lights on the machine in quick succession as they appeared.

The Prince was touring the Big Bang fair at the University of Essex in Colchester, one of around 100 similar events held every year by the organisation Engineering UK to give young people a taster of careers in technology, science, maths and engineering.
