QuoteDuchess of Cambridge Withdraws from Solo Malta Trip on Advice of Doctors

The Duchess of Cambridge will not travel to Malta this weekend for her first official solo overseas visit because she is still suffering the effects of acute morning sickness.

The duchess, who is pregnant with her second child, had been in doubt after suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. Her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, will take her place.

The couple made their decision on Wednesday night in consultation with the duchess's doctors.

From the Express story:

Quote
But now William, who was originally said to be too busy focusing on studying for flying exams inn preparation for a career as an air ambulance pilot, will go to Malta instead and carry out her programme of engagements.

I wonder what changed for William's training schedule. :hmm:

The quote interpretation is "studying" for exams, theoretical. He no longer has this weekend to study for the exam.

Presumably what changed is that Kate had to drop out.  Most people who are studying can rearrange their schedules if necessary, even if ideally they would be using certain times to study.

I'm sure Kate is very disappointed she can't go.  That said, it does sound like it's best for her not to attempt it.  Better safe than sorry.

If the Italian press is correct in reporting that Harry and some Middletons have arrived in Itally for the Gilkes wedding, it would seem that the obvious assumption about William missing the Malta trip because of training, while logical, might not have been the correct one.

Again, if the Italian press is correct, it would appear that Kate was originally scheduled to go to the tour rather than the wedding, while William went to the wedding without her. Which, if true, should be lauded by people who want Kate to put work ahead of her personal life. With the change to William, it looks like he's now putting work ahead of his personal life, which, again, should be cheered.

QuoteA Statement About The Duchess of Cambridge No Longer Visiting Malta This Weekend

The Duchess of Cambridge will no longer visit Malta this weekend. The Duke of Cambridge will undertake the visit instead.

Her Royal Highness continues to suffer from the effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The decision not to travel was taken by the Duke and Duchess on the advice of the Duchess's doctors.

The Duke is honoured to represent Her Majesty The Queen on the visit, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Malta's Independence.

The visit itinerary remains unchanged.

Forecasting that William will wear a blue  suit, red tie, white shirt and sensible black shoes. For casual he'll go with an open neck shirt in either blue or tan with jeans and an African inspired belt with slightly scuffed trainers.

However he may receive a last minute instruction to wear a kilt for the entire trip if the "No" campaign wins.  :D

I was kind of thinking that William might go, but to be brutally honest, if I were Maltese, I would prefer someone such as Beatrice or Eugenie (it was suggested elsewhere that they could be "replacements", but I understand that they're not 'full time' royals so their presence wouldn't have happened), as I find William rather boring now. I used to like him when he was younger as I always thought he was more good looking than Harry (but now it's the other way round!), but there's something off about him now IMO.

QuoteTwo Opportunities for Public to See Prince William

Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, will have two engagements tailored to meet the public during his brief visit to Malta today and tomorrow.

He arrives this afternoon to represent the Queen at the 50th anniversary celebrations of Malta's Independence. The activities were due to have been attended by the Duchess of Cambridge, but her visit was called off because she is in the early stages of her second pregnancy.

This afternoon at 4.40 pm Prince William will be at St George's Square, Valletta where he will see an In Guardia re-enactment.  Tomorrow at 1.40pm the duke will be attending a Gozitan folklore performance in Vittoriosa Square.

His other engagements will include calls on President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca (San Anton Palace) and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Auberge de Castille.

QuotePalaces, Churches, Gardens and Fireworks: How Prince William Will Spend Whirlwind Trip to Malta as Island Celebrates Independence

Prince William has a hectic 24 hours ahead of him in Malta when the second in line to the throne steps in for the Duchess of Cambridge as the royal guest of honour as the island nation celebrates its 50th anniversary of Independence Day.

With his wife Kate unable to go through with her first official solo overseas visit due to the effects of acute morning sickness from their second pregnancy, Prince William has a busy schedule from the moment he lands in Malta on Saturday afternoon.

His first stop will be San Anton Palace, the official residence of the President of the Republic Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, where he will be staying. It is also where his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, stayed on her visit there in 2005.

As is tradition for a visiting head of state, the Duke of Cambridge will plant a tree in the Palace's extensive gardens, which have been open to the public since 1882. He will then be whisked to a series a landmarks, tourist attractions and official engagements.

The interesting thing about the crowds is that it's not just about William, unlike the Australia trip. This is about the country's independence and William's really a bit player. I think if people aren't interested in coming out to see William, well, fair play.. but if the don't come out to their own independence events, that's something different. There are people living who saw independence.

In short, it'll be interesting to see if everything is as sparsely attended as the Guardia Parade, I don't think that will be on William's head. And, if it's as sparse as the parade, I think we can safely call Malta the anti-Scotland.

QuoteWatch Prince William Visits the National Library  (VIDEOS & PHOTOS)

The Prince's visit to Malta was only confirmed a few days ago; his wife Catherine, who is pregnant with their second child, was due to attend, but had to cancel due to severe morning sickness. He landed at the Malta International Airport at around 3pm.

He immediately travelled to the San Anton Palace to call on President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. A small crowd of people has gathered outside the palace well in advance, in the hope of getting a glimpse of the Prince. The Prince planted a tree in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Malta being independent.

The Prince's other commitments for the day are all in Valletta. His visit to the President was followed by a call on Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Auberge de Castille, where he was welcomed by Dr Muscat, his wife and their two daughters.

Only a small group of people opted to wait outside Castille, but a substantially larger number, with many tourists in their midst, gathered at St George's Square where an In Guardia Parade, a re-enactment showing military drills of the Knights of St John, has been held. The Prime Minister has accompanied the Prince at the square, along with Valletta mayor Alexiei Dingli.

Your Excellency President of Malta, Honourable Prime Minister, Honourable Ministers and Parliamentarians, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen – thank you so much for such a warm welcome on the occasion of Malta's fiftieth anniversary of independence.

While I know that you were not expecting me until a few days ago, I must admit that I feel honoured to be able to represent Her Majesty in a country so beloved by her.

Catherine has asked me to say how very sorry she is that she couldn't be the one to pass on The Queen's greetings to you all.  She was looking forward to coming here, and I know she hopes very much that she will be able to visit in the future.

It is now a great privilege to deliver a message to the people of Malta from Her Majesty The Queen.

QuotePrince William attended his first public Mass today as he embarked on the second day of an official visit to Malta.

The second in line to the throne was at the opulently decorated St John's Co- Cathedral in Valletta, the capital of the island.

Arriving at the cathedral, one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the world, the prince was greeted by the national anthem and took his place at the front of the church next to British High Commissioner Rob Luke.

Aides said the prince might might have attended a requiem mass or some other form of Catholic service privately, but that he is not believed to have attended a public Mass before.

The term "Mass" is used, which assumedly means it was a Roman Catholic Mass.  So the answer is probably "yes".  Someone would have to tell me the same. :P

QuoteThe Duke of Cambridge flew solo in place of his wife after the Duchess was forced to withdraw from the trip due to severe morning sickness.

William has been in regular touch with Kate about the trip – which was meant to be her first solo trip.

But, as ever, William was all smiles as he visited a centre providing a range of services for youngsters and adults from an impoverished area.

The second-in-line also revealed that his 14-month-old son is also in his thoughts, joking with a child care student that she could come to the UK and look after Prince George.

He told 17-year-old Janet Desira: "You can come and do some babysitting for me."

There would have been crowds regardless of William (or Kate) being there.

It's good PR to lump them into an event that would have been busy whether they went or not.

I think it was Adrienne that said (up thread) that William had nothing to do with big or small crowds.

Malta celebrates the independence Sept 21, this is special 2 days following William's schedule.

Reviewing what they do yearly, its not like this 2 day trip.

Well it's now time for me to remove my big ol' foot out of my mouth . Oh by the way just when you think you'd have all responses/prayers memorized,  they've changed most of our responses and the Profession of Faith to "reflect the original Latin form." You should be able to follow along with the handy response card that would be in every pew. Good times.

The Queen is planning to make a major foreign visit to Malta next year - and bring her three heirs, including toddler Prince George, with her, it can be revealed.
The historic family trip is being mooted for next November when the sovereign, who will be 89, attends the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM) for the first time since 2011.
It would be the first time a monarch and her three heirs - in this case Charles, William and George - have travelled abroad together.

QuoteRoyal Visit Malta - Day Two

The Duke of Cambridge proved a whizz at table football when he joined a group of teenagers for a lunchtime match - and scored the winning goal.

His Royal Highness is on the second day of a two-day visit to Malta, representing The Queen at the 50th anniversary of independence celebrations.

For the first engagement of the day, The Duke joined worshippers at the stunning St. John's Co-Cathedral for the Independence Day Service and saw close-up the amazing Caravaggios created by the artist especially for the cathedral.

Afterwards His Royal Highness visited a centre providing a range of services for youngsters and adults from an disadvantaged area of Malta.

QuoteLong have clothing designers, High Street brands and travel agents worshiped the 'Kate effect' - where anything the Duchess of Cambridge touches turns to commercial gold.

Now it seems Prince William is commanding serious pulling power of his own after a recent royal trip to Malta caused a 71 per cent spike in interest in the area.

According to hotel comparison website Trivago, online search traffic for the island has jumped after the second in line to the throne stepped in for Kate as the royal guest of honour at the 50th anniversary celebrations of Malta's independence.

QuoteOne of the gifts Prince William took back home with him after his visit to Malta last Sunday was for his wife Kate - and the gift was presented to him by the Prime Minister's wife, Michelle Muscat.

The gift was a sparkling midnight minaudiere handbag by Sunita Mukhi, a Maltese designer who lives in London. The bag was decorated with countless tiny Swarovski crystals and a white Maltese cross.

QuoteWhile the Duchess of Cambridge had to stay home, William filled in for his wife and went to Malta. Prince William is representing his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, on the official visit celebrating the 50th anniversary of independence.

After an exciting first day on Saturday, Prince William had a packed programme on Sunday.

On the second day of the official visit, Prince William started the day off by attending Mass at St. John's Co-Cathedral. Afterwards he looked at art, among that two masterpieces made by Italian artist Caravaggio in the Cathedral Museum.
