Well, it depends what Royal dinners we are talking about doesn't it? I can imagine William and Kate had George and Charlotte in high chairs for family meals (as they will Louis when he's old enough) but they stayed in the nursery when they had (have) formal dinners with friends. Nor do I expect to read that they will appear to lunches and evening meals with visitors when their parents are Prince and Princess of Wales, until their mid teens at least.

Anne is Royal but I don't imagine that she objects when she visits Zara or Peter and the little ones are there on booster seats when the family gathers to eat breakfast or lunch. It depends at what hour the household has dinner as to whether the children would be present or not.

On the other hand the Queen and Duke are older people and it wasn't done years ago to have children of under teen years dining with adults. Thus, when they visit Edward and Sophie for tea, for example, both Louise and James are likely to be present. If they are there for dinner, probably not.

And at Balmoral and at Sandringham Queen's rules apply, and I don't imagine it changing in Charles's time either. Littlies are indeed confined to separate tables or even to the nursery when adults gather for meals. That would apply to older children too. Different bed times, different evening meal schedules.

I think that is wise. Dinners can be boring for children and they can do unexpected things such as throwing food or cutlery. Better to do a kiddie table for them.

Yes they can throw food over adult tables not idea!! But they separate adult tables and kiddie tables,@royalanthropologist

What is the oldest a royal child was when he/she was still sitting at the children's table?

Post by: Curryong on June 15, 2018, 12:20:32 AM
We don't know details of seating arrangements for young members of the BRF in their private homes, or at Balmoral and Sandringham.

Royal children are probably allowed to dine with adults, except at very important and formal dinner parties with guests, when they have learned some table manners and dinner party conversation without exasperating their elders too much. I'd guess about fourteen or fifteen years of age. I think I remember reading about Diana encountering the teenage Edward having a tray of food sometimes while he watched videos in a sitting room at Balmoral.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte have Christmas stockings.
Will Prince William and Kate Middleton's son Prince Louis be opening this stocking on Christmas morning? (http://www.hellomagazine.com/homes/2018122365894/prince-william-kate-middleton-son-prince-louis-christmas-stocking)

Yes it doesn't matter if you're royal or not but it is traditional for each child (sometimes adults too) to have their own individual stocking at Christmas.

I wonder if Charlotte has been told that Father Christmas will expect her to clean up the pony's stall. :xmas15:

Anyhow, I somewhat doubt that she's going to have her wish granted, though there are ponies at Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Balmoral for her to ride on. AFAIK there isn't stable space at KP but there should be some at St. James Palace. :xmas4:

George is more likely to receive a tennis raquet and something related to football.
Louis will likely be happy with a big box to play in.  :xmas1:

Yes I would expect that during her youth, Princess Elizabeth and her younger sister Princess Margaret had more access to pony riding. I remember an old video of QEII with her then young grandchildren, Princess William and Harry, the Phillips and the York princesses riding with their grandmother at Balmoral.
I wonder if London had more horse accommodations in the pre-WWII 1930's when the Yorks were residing there?
Were more people riding for pleasure and were some tradespeople still using horse carts for some deliveries in different parts of the metropolis?
Title: Re: Wales' Kids general chat

Yes from what I've read there were a lot more livery stable around in cities including London. There was a large one for people to ride in the Row at Hyde Park. Of course the Yorks were often away from central London on official duties and leisure activities. The Duke went on a lot of shoots and fox hunts as well. And they were given White Lodge which in those days was a lot more semi rural than it is now.

As a horse loving mom with two horse crazy daughters I can say with confidence that early riding is fine. You just can?t expect them to be able to take off on their own. They love to be in the saddle and take lessons, and by five years old they can be trotting and going over cross rails with a great deal of supervision and in an enclosed area. However, I did read somewhere that Prince William thinks she is too young.....and he and Catherine are the best judges of what is best for her.

Great to get your insight on this sport @Princess Cassandra. It appears that the Cambridges have followed the example of the PoW and the late Diana, Princess of Wales by introducing their children to pony riding early on. The Queen's Phillips', Wales, York and Wessex grandchildren all seem to have started on one of the small ponies to become acquainted with riding early on.

QuoteKate supposedly was allergic to horses or so I read.

This article from 2018 shared that George was learning from Zara Tindall. There are plenty of experienced riders in the BRF, so Catherine knows that she doesn't have to teach this sport to her kids when there's two Olympians in the family.

Kate Middleton's son Prince George learning to ride on Zara Tindall's Shetland pony | HELLO! (https://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2018052448863/prince-george-learning-ride-shetland-pony/)

QuotePrince George is taking after his great-grandmother the Queen! The future King, who turns five in July, is learning how to ride and has been having lessons at Windsor. A source exclusively told HELLO! that George has been practising on a Shetland pony that belongs to his father Prince William's cousin, Zara Tindall, who is a talented equestrian herself. They said: "William and Kate were really keen to get George riding ? it's something all the royals do and the whole family adore animals. But obviously he's only small so they didn't want to put him on a big horse. They asked Zara if they could use one of her Shetland ponies and he's been learning to ride on one of those."

No doubt the Phillips girls, Charlotte, and Mia Tindall have already been taught some early riding basics and in time I'm sure that Louis, Lena and Archie will join them. :xmas15:

^^^@sandy-I'm confused. Where does it say that Charlotte is the Queen's "clone" in the Daily Mail or Mirror Online articles? AFAIK there have been other reports and articles suggesting that Charlotte enjoys activities/toys that are similar to QEII as a girl but also that they've liked other things as well.

As she gets older I think she will look more and more like a Middleton. I don't think people need a windsor gene to like horses, besides which there are stables of horses that would certainly attract any child royal or not. The Queen is a thoroughbred horse owner and avidly visited horse farms which many breeders and owners do just as avidly.

Yes, I heard that, too. The Cambridge children probably have lessons already, but to have a pony of one?s own at her age may be unwise. I don?t know where they would be taking lessons and whether there are dedicated grooms and teachers for the royal children. I?ve always thought she would ride.

I believe that the Windsor children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have more or less had access to ponies and horses via the royal estates and of course had family members who have ridden for decades so it's unsurprising that they enjoy them.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Queen's great-grandchildren chooses to try for the British Olympic Equestrian team in the future.

As for Princess Charlotte's physical appearance, right now I'm inclined to think that she is a mix of QEII, Lady Sarah Chatto and Carole Middleton.  :xmas15:

I hope she does not look like Lady Chatto, I don't think she does. Lady Chatto looks more like her Dad. Lady Chatto 's mouth and chin are entirely different than Charlotte's.

I don't see her looking like the Queen. The grandchild with the closest resemblance to the Queen is Lady Louise. I don't see the Queen's looks coming out in the great grandchildren. Which I think is as it should be.

Charlotte has the looks of a MIddleton. Maybe with some Spencer characteristics around the eyes. In a few years she may just look like the Middleton side of the family as she ages.

@sandy-We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.  :xmas17:

Hello did a poll on this question in 2016 and even then QEII and Lady Sarah were the top two among the choices on the online poll: Choices: QEII, Lady Sarah Chatto, Carole Middleton, Catherine and William.

Princess Charlotte: who does she look like? (https://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2016093033799/princess-charlotte-vote-who-does-she-look-like/)

QuoteThe Queen 46.75%
Lady Sarah Chatto 34.08%
Carole Middleton 8.89%
Kate Middleton 4.79%
Prince William 5.49%

Obviously three years have passed, but I can see why people thought that little Charlotte bore a resemblance to these ladies.

Now I wasn't surprised to see it suggested that George and Charlotte might receive children's cooking kits from Father Christmas this year. Apparently they love to help in the kitchen, so kid sized utensils might be a good gift. :xmas15:

It's amusing to me that Charlotte's own parents are rated low in who she resembles. I see no resemblance to the Queen whatsoever, there seems to be a wish that she does which I don't get. Lady Chatto's mouth and chin are not the same as Charlotte's. Unless Charlotte is related to Snowdon I don't see how she can resemble lady Chatto who looks like her dad.

I think she's actually a mini me of Carole and Kate.

Why was Diana left out, Diana is her grandmother and there are pictures showing the resemblance. The ones who say she looks like the Queen have her side by side with 90 something Queen. The Queen looked totally different from Charlotte when she was a child.  Wishing Charlotte looking like the Queen took place when the child was swaddled in blankets and a new born.

Yes I recall that is what Princess Anne competed in during her years as a competitive equestrian and that Zara does the same. I believe that Anne's ex-husband competed in the same events too.

Well if the weather is good during the children's winter break, then they'll likely ride when they're up at Amner Hall.

George has tall parents and may end up at 6ft 5 +. The BRF has shot up from small to average height (George V, Mary and their sons, in fact Edward VIII was diminutive) to average height (due to Prince Philip) in Charles's generation, then  to tall William and Harry thanks largely to Diana, in only a few generations.

Kudos to their parents for enabling and encouraging inter-generational relationships!  Grandparents are so important, and they are so lucky to have two sets plus great-grandparents.  It's also wonderful that they are so interested in animals and flowers; things in the natural world are enriching to us all, and these children are fortunate to have so much exposure to them.

What W&K do with their children, home videos and phone calls is a normal activity in united families with no bad blood relationships.

Years/decades later, I bet there will be a few releases of these precious and private moments.  The Queen has done so, private or unseen pictures of her time with parents, sibling, with her own family, etc.

I can honestly say that looking back on my own childhood, I find that memories of my grandparents are sharper than any others. I treasured my time with them. So glad they will have similar memories.

True, I too treasure memories of my grandparents, both sides.  Sometimes I dream about those moments with them.

About the Covid19 and children, I believe Kate will not be much in the duty frontline, her principal duty will be homeschooling the children until schools are reopened, phase 2 of a pandemic, probably optimistically September 2020 for schools to reopen/school year, optimistic for a phase 2 in general; business and schools reopen Mid June to early July 2020.

If they do have a summer term, IMO they should have a good three to four week true vacation before fall term begins.

Aha, since you are an educator your mind travels in that direction. I was thinking less educationally and more from a child's or parents' point of view. I just think it would be nice to have a veritable break between school years....like closure and commencement. Either way you look at it I hope it happens that way. Thanks for your input!

Obviously you were right on, TLLK.  But I was thinking that halfway through this school  year we may see Prince Louis beginning nursery....both of the older children started when they were 2 1/2, I think.  Won't he be adorable with that Michael Middleton hair and smile!

I agree - Louis' speech is very good for a child of 2 1/2.  I think between their nanny and their parents these children have had a lot of quality time and attention, and it shows.  But you don't need a nanny to provide this kind of advantage - just the example and knowledge of how to work it in to a busy working family lifestyle.

QuoteThe Queen?s passion for horses has spanned more than 90 years ? and she will soon have some new riding companions. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are trotting about on their first ponies.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge?s children have become avid riders in recent months, practising their skills at their home in Norfolk, where they have spent much of the lockdown. The Queen, 94, who has continued riding her fell ponies during lockdown, is understood to be taking a close interest in her great-grandchildren?s progress in the saddle.

When the lockdown eases, George, 7, Charlotte, 5, and Louis, 2, are expected to join ?Gan Gan?, as they call her, for rides at Windsor and Balmoral in the summer.

Not unexpected as it runs in the family.  I wonder if their mother is learning to ride as well, or did I read some time ago that she is allergic to horses? I also wonder where they are riding - at a riding stable or at Sandringham where the instructor comes to them. We can expect to see them all (Phillips, Cambridge, Tindals) in the future.  What fun!

That makes sense, because a pony club will have an indoor arena for lessons in all weather in addition for facilities for boarding.  Another benefit is meeting other like minded children.  We don't have actual "pony clubs" here, but my children found friends with others who took lessons and boarded at a riding stable. In fact, there are lots of benefits to the sport.

You know its a slow news month when every major British paper regurgitates her quote.

Hillary has made some controvercial comments about Kate in the past.

Back to the actual news:

Cute seeing the kids in their uniforms and shopping since we didnt get back to school photos this year.

I noticed we didn't for any monarchy. Are some countries still distance learning or did the royals just forego photos? The only ones I recall are the three who went off to boarding school (Christian, Alexia and Leonor).

I doubt the twitter headline George paid for it with his allowance. I doubt they make him pay for school pencils with allowance.

@TudorQueen - I believe that schools are back in person for all of the nations with reigning royals or at least a hybrid of distance with smaller cohorts of in person classes. From what I recall  the  Belgian, Monegasques and Spanish royals routinely released an annual back to school photo usually showing the parents dropping off the kids at school on the first morning of the school year. However the pandemic and perhaps age of the students seems to have ended that practice for the Belgians and Spaniards. I have seen one paparazzi photo of Infanta Sofia walking in to the school in her uniform and a very heavy backpack.

The Danes, British,Japanese,  Norwegians and Dutch tended to just do a first day for their kids when they started at a new school ( nursery, primary, secondary).
So I expect that a year from now we'll see Louis starting his first day.

So from what I have read, the Cambridges were shopping at an Australian based stationary/toy shop named Smiggles which looks like it carries all the fancy erasers (rubbers), scented pencils, etc...Which kids love and teachers...well  <_< :hehe: Let's just say that it can be tricky to keep kids focused when they're all smelling their pencils, pens and playing with their fancy stationary kits.

I expect that for basic school supplies, Thomas Battersea has  list supplied to the parents on what they do need to provide.

So adorable. And I?m glad to see them bringing their children out to public events like this. I think it?s a good way to acclimate them to the fact that they?ll have their picture taken for the rest of their lives as member of the RF (and a future king), but they can be calm and set boundaries.

Yes, there any of the following school/uni/military in facility days will very likely be agreed with the BM to be respected and the BRF does their part to showcase them at birthday pictures and children friendly events.

THE Princess of Wales watched Strictly stars rehearse yesterday on a secret studio visit  before her children got the chance to be judges.

Kate took her two youngest, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, along with her.

They were allowed to sit in the judges' chairs and deliver verdicts with scoring paddles for dancers Katya Jones and Neil Jones.

Kate, 41, and the youngsters were then introduced to presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, and got to meet pros including Dianne Buswell and Nadiya Bychkova.

During their two-hour visit, they were shown the costume department, where Louis tried on a small gold crown, and stood on the balcony where the contestants gather above the dance floor at BBC's Elstree studios.

A source said: ''Kate and Charlotte are huge fans of Strictly so they were delighted to be invited.

''Kate took pictures of the children in the judges' seats.

''She seemed really relaxed and was all smiles.

"She was polite, sweet and charming with everyone and made sure Louis didn't get over-excited.

"There was a strict security lockdown on set and staff were told not to take any photos.

''The children were especially excited and got dressed up.

"They were thrilled to be on set and to meet their favourite celebrities.

King Charles, 75, and Queen Camilla, 76, are also big fans, as was the late Queen.

Do you think Lena calls The Princess of Wales "Aunt Catherine"?

I do, this is what families are like, they take care of each other and support each other during good and bad times, this was a fun event for children which Catherine is very good at.  That there shows the strong closeness with the Tindall's and the Wales in letting their children just go and have fun with Auntie.

Louis and Mia today walking hand in hand reminds me of an old picture of Zara and William about the same age and at Sandringham.

You sure can see the meaning of loyalty and deep love William has for his family, seeing that picture of him with Zara when children shows how much he then really loved his family and that has carried over to this day......Thanks Wannable for sharing the pictures of the then William and Zara with Louis now his son and Mia now Zara's daughter........love that the closeness of the generations is continuing.

:xmas10: I know how much I appreciated my cousins while I was growing up and it's lovely to see that the Tindall and Wales children are close too.  Considering that Sandringham is  smaller than most royal residences perhaps the Tindall stayed with the Wales?

Yes YLLK, it is so very nice to see that so many in the royal family are close to each other and I bet they all have their backs also.  I like that Anne in that interview by Mike's podcast showed how close she was to William and Catherine and that Catherine and Sophie are like best friends also....that is what the security of love in a family brings to them as a whole tribe. And to know that William and Mike are very good friends as William sure does need the friendships of those he trusts as he now has a heavier job then before.  I am sure if HM is looking down that she is very proud of that closeness in those that walked to church today.

Those are such sweet and cute pictures of Mia and Louis, and William and Zara, walking together, and I love Louis' tartan trousers.  It's lovely to see how close these families are, and also with the Phillips' girls.
