When Queen Victoria of England became interested in India the Durbar Room was added to Osborne House. The new wing had Moghul-style plasterwork and arches. The design was that of Bhai Ram Singh, with the assistance of the director of the Lahore Museum, Lockwood Kipling.

Lockwood Kipling was the father of Rudyard Kipling, the poet and writer. He made quite a name for himself as an interior designer using Indian artifacts. I believe he worked for the Duke of Connaught as well as the Queen.

Yes, Albert and Victoria knew the original building would be far too small for the family, retinue, number of servants and any future guests, so it would have to go. It was the stunning location that was the attraction.
