Great initiative, and already successful. She really is making a difference - books can take children anywhere they want to go, and children in disadvantaged areas need that so much.

Queen Camilla champions favourite cause in historic solo audience ? Royal Central

I am so pleased to see that Camilla's still promoting one of her most important patronages and causes.  :yesss:

Quote

Queen Camilla has put one of her great passions at the heart of her first solo audience as consort.

Her Majesty received the Children?s Laureate, Joseph Coelho, at Buckingham Palace on the morning of November 3rd 2022.

Queen Camilla has long championed literacy and reading and chose it as the subject of her first individual audience since her husband?s accession.

Joseph Coelho was appointed as Children?s Laureate in 2022 and will hold the post for two years. He has a long career in performance poetry as well as playwriting. The role is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of children?s literature and poetry. It was created in 1999.

Literacy is one of Queen Camilla?s favourite issues. She has been patron of a wide range of organisations encouraging reading and also started her own online book club on Instagram where she recommends favourite works and encourages discussion around them.

Queen Camilla starts her own literary festival ? Royal Central

What began as a virtual activity is now going to be an in person one as well.

QuoteThe Queen had a busy Thursday on her first day back at engagements after testing positive for Covid-19 early in February. Her Majesty launched her new charity, The Queen?s Reading Room.

At a Clarence House reception that was meant to happen last week, Queen Camilla announced that her online book club is now a registered charity. On the charity?s official website, RoyalReadingRoom.UK, she outlines the charity?s goals:

?The Queen?s Reading Room is a charity working to provide opportunities for the appreciation of literature among adults and children in the UK and around the world. We seek to advance education by closing the gap between writers and readers through accessible, educational and free literary content available year-round. Our purpose is to help more people find and connect with books which enrich their lives and turn them into lifelong readers.?

The Royal Reading Room was first launched in January 2021 on Instagram and provided a new list of book recommendations each season for followers to enjoy. The Instagram page featured author interviews, insights, and further recommendations.

The Queen?s Reading Room will also be hosting an annual literary festival. The first festival will be held at Hampton Court Palace in Surrey on 11 June. Ticket holders can hear talks and see performances from notable authors and performers, including David Olusoga, Gyles Brandreth, Ken Follet, and Dame Judi Dench. There will also be literary-themed tours happening at Hampton Court Palace.

^I?d like to see more of this! As books are challenged and libraries are continuously under attack, I love seeing any public figure encourage children to read!

It?s more important than ever in this digital age that children learn the absolute joy of reading a good book. I?ve been a voracious reader all my life. I can?t imagine coming from a background where reading and writing isn5 encouraged.

This is a wonderful project. However it?s a great shame that a genuinely popular author like JK Rowling who encouraged a whole generation of children to read, wasn't asked to contribute a story. People like Conan Doyle whose works sold like hot cakes in the first quarter of the 20th century contributed a tiny story in the original library. However, with the exception of Anthony Horowitz and a couple of others, the 21st century compilers haven?t bothered with popular British authors.

And as for recipe books, instead of nepotism running wild, what about Mary Berry?

Birthdate: March 24, 1935
Birthplace: Bath, Somerset, England
Author of over 75 cookbooks, Mary Berry has also hosted several culinary shows, such as Mary Berry Cooks. The Guardian ranked her the second-best-dressed person over 50. A CBE and DBE recipient, she has also received the Guild of Food Writers Lifetime Achievement Award and an honorary degree.

And

Jamie Oliver has been named as Britain?s second biggest-selling author since records began, behind ... guess who?

With total sales of ?126million from more than 10million cookbooks, the Essex-born television chef and school meals campaigner is ranked second only to Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Ms Rowling?s seven books about the boy wizard have generated sales of more than ?237.6million.

The sales figures have been compiled by The Bookseller, which drew up a list of Britain?s 50 most successful authors (see below).?
