The birth of Princess Caroline: the media frenzy that surrounded a royal baby ? Royal Central

On the 23rd of January 1957, protected by the walls of the Princely Palace, Princess Grace gave birth. The world went crazy and swarmed the tiny principality with photographers and journalists, all ready to report on Grace Kelly?s new baby.

It was announced that the baby was a girl, born at 8lbs 2oz and that she would be called Caroline Louise Marguerite; she would receive the title of Princess and was to be the heiress to the Mon?gasque throne.

She retained the title until her brother?s birth on the 14th of March 1958. And in those 14 months, the princely couple offered several photo opportunities to the world?s media, including the official presentation of the baby to the Mon?gasque population, a tradition that has been followed many years later by Prince Albert and Princess Charlene.

Princess Caroline was christened on the 5th of March 1957, in Monaco?s Cathedral, with Margaret Davis and Prince George Festetics de Tolna as her godparents.

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco stepped into the shoes of one of the most legendary women in history, bearing her title and serving Monaco as their first lady just as she did. Nearly six years following the succession of Prince Albert II to his father?s throne, Charlene Lynette Wittstock married and became royalty.

Thirty-three years before her wedding day, Charlene Lynette Wittstock was born to Michael Wittstock and Lynette in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe). The family, which also included two younger brothers, would relocate to South Africa in 1989 when Charlene was only 11-years-old. The Protestant Wittstock family came from a very strong German heritage, from which Charlene?s great-great-grandparents emigrated to South Africa to escape hardship in 1861. Embracing a new life in a new country, Charlene would attend the Tom Newby Primary School located in Benoni, South Africa, not far from Johannesburg.

Charlene?s mother was previously a very accomplished athlete, taking part in the sport of diving. She also was a swimming coach. In some way following in her mother?s footsteps, the future princess took to the pool herself and would go on to become a successful Olympian.

Then Charlene Wittstock?s Olympic fame would come in the year 2000 when she would place 5th as a part of the women?s South African medley swim team. Previously, she clenched medals in both the All-African Games in 1999, Commonwealth Games in 1998 and again in 2002. Although not star-studded as some, Charlene?s swimming career would result in two silver medals and three gold medals total.

Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques?s birthday dedicated to important cause ? Royal Central

Monaco?s Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques celebrated their eighth birthday over the weekend and highlighted an important cause.

Celebrating at Monaco?s Oceanographic Institute, the young twins helped prepare a pack of juvenile turtles who will soon depart the principality to join the Turtle Village in Noflaye, Senegal.

In a Facebook post on the Princely Palace account, it was revealed that Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques were joined by their parents, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, for the engagement.

The twins were photographed petting the turtles and decorating their crates. According to the EcoFund website, over 600 turtles have been rescued and rehabilitated by the Turtle Village, with the ultimate goal of releasing them into nature reserves and parks around Senegal.

According to the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, the young royals helped prepare 46 juvenile turtles for their journey to Senegal. Their participation was part of the first round of a three-year programme to rehabilitate and return turtles to the wild.

On Tuesday,  Prince Albert celebrated his 65th birthday! At noon, he was joined by Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella to watch the Changing of the Guard. The Prince's Carabinieri Orchestra wished him a happy birthday with music.

An emotional tribute from a prince to his father to mark special anniversary ? Royal Central

Prince Albert II of Monaco has fired two cannons linked to the birth of his father, Prince Rainer III.

The Sovereign Prince was joined by his sisters, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie, as the two historic guns were put back into use.

The cannons, on the Fort Antoine Esplanade in Monaco, were used a century ago to signal the birth of Prince Rainier.

They were fired to mark the arrival of the prince on May 31st 1923.

They have been restored to mark the centenary of the birth of Rainier who went on to be one of the most celebrated of all Monaco?s rulers and among the most famous royals of the 20th century.

Prince Albert II fired the cannons alongside his wife, Princess Charlene.

Princess Stephanie?s son, Louis Ducruet, was also present for the twilight ceremony.

The guns may be fired again on November 19th, Monaco?s National Day, when a salute traditionally takes plac

Aren?t the twins growing up! I think they resemble Charlene and her family more than Albert though. Even though Albert was fair as a child he was stockier than his son, even when he was very young. They are just a few weeks younger than my twin grandchildren, also a boy and a girl, so I?ve taken notice of their progress. They seem happy kids!
