Don Carlos (1545-1568) was the eldest son of King Philip II of Spain and Maria Manuela of Portugal.
He was deformed from birth. As he grew, Don Carlos began to show increasing signs of mental disabilities.
He was known as the Infante Carlos and Prince of Asturias.

It was unfortunate that Carlos' mother, Maria Manuela died very soon after his birth.
Having his mother look after him might have been beneficial for him.

Don Carlos complained about his father's resistance of giving him positions of authority. Finally, King Philip gave him a position in the Council of Castile.
