I suppose in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the present WA was nearing completion, around 1200 people (most standing) would have been considered a huge number. It?s only been in the last century or so that such a number has proved the Abbey to be a bit inadequate. Certainly twice the number that can be fitted in, including foreign dignitaries, wanted invitations to this funeral, which has been truly a once in a lifetime event.
