Title: The Greek Royal Family news, current events and general discussion
Post by: Jennifer on August 30, 2015, 11:25:35 AM
A thread  for the non-reigning Greek Royal Family's news, current events and general discussion.

QuoteToday's birthday girl is the former Queen of Greece, Anne-Marie, as she celebrates her 69th birthday. And her story is quite incredible too.

She grew up in Denmark as the youngest child of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. When she was only 13, she met her third cousin, Crown Prince Constantine of Greece, for the first time, as he accompanied his parents on an official visit to the Scandinavian country.

As a gathering of European royalty the wedding of King Constantine and Anne-Marie was one of the last of the great spectaculars, and that's reflected in the guest list and the bride's attendants. Of course, Constantine's mother Frederika was related to many of the guests and his sister Sophia became doubly so when she married Juan Carlos, the King of Spain. There's some video about on YouTube that shows them all going to a ball the day before.

I think that the only wedding that has recently has featured with royal attendants from outside the bride's home was when CP Victoria had her Godchildren:Amalia, Ingrid Alexandra, and Christian in her wedding.

Yes, TLLK, and Vic's bridesmaids were all children and very sweet. Constantine's mother was a formidable woman and went all out with this wedding. I'm sure none of the Scandi monarchies would have wanted such a show. Anne-Marie's attendants were all around her age or a few years younger, I believe. She was only just eighteen. Princess Anne, for instance, was fourteen, Margarita of Romania fifteen.

The bride's age and everything about this wedding really, reminded me of those old gatherings of royalty for a wedding of one of their own before the First World War. Everyone related to everyone else etc! For instance the BRF turned up! Constantine's supporters included three future Kings, the Prince of Wales, Carl Gustav of Sweden and Harald of Norway, as well as Michael of Kent and Michael of Greece.

There are photos here of the wedding party and the bridesmaids in white and tiaras. Spectacular! You can tell I enjoy all this, can't you?

But this is a lovely story - considering how young she was and all the pressure on their marriage from their political problems - they stayed together and seem genuinely happy

That's awful. However the Royal properties in Greece have not been well cared for anyway, and the security surrounding Tatoi s rotten. I remember seeing fountains choked with weeds in the gardens and plaster dropping off buildings years ago. Tatoi is a very melancholy place, if the photos of it are anything to go by.

Is there much ointerest in the RF, in Greece?  I get the impression that they were not all that well liked and are unlikey to get back

Historically George I (Prince Willem of Denmark) was well liked, though he was assassinated abroad as an old man. He was placed as King of Greece by the Great Powers in the 1860s when he was only 17. Since then the GRF have had troubles and been exiled several times. King Constantine, the present ex King, was believed to be under his mother Queen Frederika's thumb and was tossed out. I don't think he or his children are well-liked. IMO the Greeks are naturally a republican-minded people. There's no appetite for a monarchy there.

That was my feeling, that the RF might have been accepted years ago because new monarchies with royals from other countries were often accepted and provided a focus for loyalty.. but quite a few of the more recent kings were sent into exile. I gtather that Constatine and his wife do visit Greec but the Crown Prince is seen as leading a very lavish lifestyle and might not be tolerated.  I fel that royal families that have had a fairly short stay in their new countries, should give up expecting a restoration, pay the odd visit, keep ion touch but basically retire inot private life.

Constantine and his wife Queen Anne-Marie (a Princess of Denmark, sister of Queen Daisy) were permitted to return home to live in Greece in 2013. Constantine published his memoirs in a Greek newspaper two years later. I believe they spend the majority of their time in their villa in Greece now, as Constantine is in bad health. He can't walk properly any more.

Anne Marie has been a good wife to him. He and Juan Carlos of Spain, his brother in law, were reputedly very good mates and fond of European fun times with various ladies if you know what I mean, in their younger days, though Constantine was never so blatant as JC has been.

Constantine and Anne Marie have five children. The majority live and work in the US and Britain. The eldest son Crown Prince Pavlos married heiress Marie-Chantal Miller, from an enormously wealthy family (British-born.) She's something of a socialite, but is also a very smart business woman on her own account.

Her money has proved very useful and handy to the Greek Royals, as Constantine practically lived on donations from wealthy supporters for many years. Pr Charles is close to him and reputedly was generous.

And as I recall there was a lengthy court battle over who actually owned Tatoi (government or the GRF). For decades the GRF could only visit the cemetery for a few  hours at  a time for memorial services until they were allowed to settle in Greece. It's a shame that this type of vandalism did occur though.

Yes, I believe Constantine 'won' the court battle but received much less compensation for it than he had asked for. His younger sister Irene got an even smaller sum, can't remember whether Sophia was given anything, perhaps not as she was in much better financial circumstances.

With regard to the smashing of the stone over King Paul and Queen Frederika's grave, it is said that there is a saying in Greece 'If you want to start a fight in any taverna just propose a toast to the memory of Queen Frederika!'

There's a large Greek population in Melbourne and I can honestly say that of the Greeks that I've talked with about the GRF over the years I've met only one, a woman who thought she was alright. The rest made jokey 'Devils' horns', spat, told me the various uncomplimentary names she had among the population, etc. None wanted any royals back at all.

The Greek government announces plans for the former summer palace. It would like to have the estate converted to a five star hotel and spa. Former King Constantine does not wish to have the palace back but would like to see the royal tombs preserved.

Greek government plans to turn former Royal Palace into five-star spa-hotel ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/interests/residences/greek-government-plans-to-turn-former-royal-palace-into-five-star-spa-hotel-155089/)

QuoteThe former Greek Royal Palace of Tatoi is to re-open, but not as a royal palace. The Greek government, who seized the property when the Greek monarchy collapsed, plans to reopen the palace as a hotel. Tatoi Palace is the former summer palace of the Greek royal family and is located at a 10,000 acres estate, 27 kilometres from the city centre of Athens. For the last 50 years the Palace has been abandoned. Now the Greek government wants to redecorate the estate and open caf?s, restaurants and a five-star hotel with a spa on the property.

The government also wants to renovate the gardens, which house several royal tombs. The farm that is connected to the palace will also be given new life and be able to deliver exclusive agricultural products. The government believes the farm can offer products on a par with the some of the most exclusive products currently on the market.

The Greek Republic?s Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, is heading the project. She told the Greek press: ?The government want Tatoi to be a year-round attraction with environmentally friendly infrastructure. It is a hugely ambitious project. The biggest challenge will not be completing the project, rather it will be sustaining the massive running costs that it will incur once operational.?

The old palace itself will have a role as a museum or centre of Royal Greek history. The building from 1872 is now heavily dilapidated and has not been used for more than 50 years. The cost of the project, both renovating the old palace and building a hotel, restaurant and farm will be great. The Greek government now hopes that private investors will come forward and contact the government. The Greek government believes the project will have a budget of 130 million euros and hopes this can help strengthen the Greek economy and attract more tourists to Greece. They make no secret of the fact that it is the royal history of the property that will be able to attract more tourists to this part of the country.

The younger Greek royals obviously can't remember Tatoi when it was a (rather inconvenient) family home. King Constantine and Anne Marie do though, and the announcement that the palace is going to be a hotel (even a five star one) must evoke mixed feelings at least. However Constantine just wouldn't be able to keep up the maintenance of Tatoi as a private home and better that it become a hotel than in the unkempt and tumbledown condition it has been in for many years, masonry dropping off, ponds overgrown with algae etc.

Of course the ex King is naturally worried about the family graves of his ancestors and other relatives and they must be preserved. For better or for worse, the Greek Royal family was part of the nation's history on and off for nearly a hundred years, at least the Sonderberg-Glucksberg lot were, King Otto was from a different family!

Title: Re: The Greek Royal Family news, current events and general discussion
Post by: Curryong on January 27, 2021, 11:33:18 AM
I think it would be much nicer if the Greek royals were all removed to a nice secure mausoleum in a cemetery in Athens. The graves are all in a rather remote wooded spot on the Tatoi estate and probably vandals would find it quite easy to damage the graves again.

However Comstantine doesn't seem to want them moved, maybe he regards the graveyard as sacred ground for his family, and then the Eastern Orthodox Church would have to get involved, I suppose, and maybe it's all too complicated. Personally, if I were Constantine and Anne Marie, the last place I'd want to be buried is in this abandoned and melancholy spot, but they obviously feel differently.

Wildfires in Greece have reached the outskirts of Athens and are now threatening the grounds and graves in the royal cemetery of the Tatoi Palace.

The Palace is of course in bad repair as are the graves. The Palace and its wine cellars has also been looted many times since the Greek Royal Family left. However, there were reports of repairs and renovation in the near future and it would be disastrous if it was to be burned out. Prince Nicholas is at the Palace and the authorities have ordered that documents and other artefacts must be evacuated.

News report below.

BREAKING:
Tatoi Palace is now threatened by fires.

Greek media reports that the fire now has invaded the interior of the royal park & the royal cemetery.

According to the president of the Association of Friends of Tatoi the situation is extremely critical.

@LouisFerdinand -In the Orthodox denominations, the Sacraments are referred to as mysteries as they recognize God's presence in them.

The Sacraments (Mysteries) | Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (https://www.greekorthodoxchurchbuffalo.org/our-faith/the-sacraments-mysteries)

Nice Sofia and Benedikte, with a daughter each as companion, were able to attend their nephew's wedding. And Irene :flower3:

The bride is wearing the Greek antique corsage tiara. The tiara came with Anne Marie from Denmark (she got it for her 18th birthday) and was made from a corsage that belonged to her great-grandmother Queen Victoria of Sweden originally.

The Antique Corsage Tiara (https://www.thecourtjeweller.com/2016/11/the-antique-corsage-tiara.html)

No surprise we see it.It has been worn by all three of the daughter in laws of Anne Marie and Constantine on their weddings.

It looks a fantastic wedding, a real mix of family, royal relatives from the Greek and Danish sides, and European friends including the Yorkies and husbands. A real get together and everyone very happy.

Touching that the bride wore such an historic tiara. Anne Marie married at a very young age, an exception even at that time. What a turbulent time she and Constantine have experienced during their lives together!

The two bridesmaids helping with the train were daughters of Nina's new sister in law Alexia, Anna and Amelia Morales.

I also notice Alice Naylor-Leyland's daughter Nancy was one of the little flower girls. Alice who works for Vogue, hosted their recent wedding dinner back in England at her husband's family home Stibbingdon house.

Thank you @TudorQueen  for the bridesmaid information.  I was wondering who they might be. I noticed that Ann Marie wore her  diamond cross necklace yesterday  which was worn for her own wedding at the same cathedral.

I admit I am always curious about the bridal parties at royal weddings. Dont know why.

I found out the last little bridesmaid (still don't know the page boys). Its Gene Getty, daughter of Sabine Getty. Sabine is a Swiss born jewelry designer (married to a grandson John Paul Getty Jr).

There were a number of impressive jewels on the royals. Including the cross, a number with special meaning for the day.

An interesting article on Princess Irene who is the daughter of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece. She's also the younger sister of King Constantine and Spain's Queen Sofia. This makes her the sister-in-law of former King Juan Carlos and Greece's Queen Anne Marie. Irene is the aunt and great-aunt to many in Denmark, Greece and Spain.  She is also a concert pianist and is interested in Eastern Philosophy.

Pocket Profile - Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark ? Lilibet's Handbag (https://lilibetshandbag.blog/pocket-profile-princess-irene-of-greece-and-denmark/)

QuotePrincess Irene was a studious and disciplined child and young adult, and one with considerable musical talent. She was a pupil of the concert pianist Gina Bachauer and would later perform as a professional concert pianist. She lived in Greece during the reigns of both her father and brother, which would last until 1973 when the monarchy was abolished. At that point, she followed her family into another exile in Rome.

I?ve always wondered why Irene never married though her siblings did. Frederike was always one for arranging royal marriages for her children. In Sofia?s case it was a very grand royal match indeed. There are various stories about Irene remaining single, but I?ve always favoured the unrequited love angle. Although she was her mother?s companion for many years I don?t believe she was a picked handmaiden, a la Victoria of Wales. She seems to have been reasonably content in more recent years however.

It would be a surprise in one sense if Juan Carlos did turn up I think, but in another, not so much. Glad to see that Queen Leti will be there in support of her husband and mother in law.

I just hope that the Greek royals are doing something with the royal graveyard. The house is an absolute wreck and still needs tons of work. Judging from photos taken a few years ago the whole place just looks very sad. If they could just get the graveyard mowed and weeded and the gravestones whitened it would at least be something, even if the burial is of course very private.

That?s good, and if it comes to it I?m sure the Greek royals wouldn?t mind contributing a bit of money to perhaps get a stonemason in to tend to some of the neglected or smashed headstones. When I saw photos of the house, once a happy family home, on another forum years ago I just gasped. I did read today that some pine trees are being planted near the cemetery today to prepare for Monday's funeral and burial. Hopefully they're going to take root, flourish and help with erosion up on the hillsides.

The Greek Royal Family celebrate a religious rite three days after King Constatine's death.
Some information on Greek Orthodox funeral rites.

Cultural spotlight: Greek funeral traditions (https://www.frazerconsultants.com/2016/09/cultural-spotlight-greek-funeral-traditions/)

It's possible that the family were celebrating this custom.

QuoteRelease of the Spirit

In Greek culture, it is believed that the soul does not leave the body until three days after a person dies. Because of this, the family will visit the grave three days after the death for a small ceremony where a priest blesses a plate of koliva, scatters it to the wind, and then breaks the plate on the tombstone.

The BRF sometimes don?t send senior representatives to the funeral of other royals (witness the absence of anyone British and royal at the very recent funeral of the Margrave of Baden, a close descendant of PP?s sister) imo Anne should have gone to that one. Nor gdoes it seem that Charles will be there at Constantine?s funeral, though he was close to him, and William was his godson.

It?s definitely one of the things that I dislike about the BRF, and it?s long been a bugbear of mine that the late Queen and Prince Charles never bothered turning up to other monarchs? birthdays, anniversaries, or indeed funerals. The fact that the Queen ONCE broke her holiday at Balmoral to attend King Badouin?s funeral after his unexpected death was a matter of note in newspapers at the time.

They?ve always kept themselves apart in that way since the war really, and that shows no signs of changing. It?s not a way for younger generations of British royals to get to know their contemporaries.

It was said by some at the time that it would have seemed extremely churlish if the Queen had kept to her usual habit, in other words she was advised of the bad PR, if she had stayed away while enjoying holidays, given that practically every royal house in Europe had sent representatives, including fellow monarchs.

I've been checking some of the guest lists for  relatively recent European  royal funerals for reigning and non-reigning houses and here's what I have found. These are from 2003 forward.
Prince Claus-UK representative-Prince of Wales (Charles)
Princess Juliana-UK representative-Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Bernhard-UK representative-Duke of Edinburgh
Prince Rainer-UK representative-Duke of York.
King Michael-UK representative-Prince of Wales (Charles)

Prince Henrik of Denmark did not wish for any foreign royals to be present. Prince Friso's funeral only had King Harald as he was the Godfather.

I did mention other occasions (such as other royals birthdays) as well. Why wasn?t Prince George with the other heirs to European/Scandi thrones at that famous photoshoot for Prss I-A?s birthday? King Harald of Norway?s 80th birthday could have seen Charles and Camilla present but again no. Though Harald and Sonja have visited Sandringham and CH often.

The truth is that for decades whenever even informal Royal get-togethers are organised the very senior members of the BRF are almost always absent. ?Let?s send the Wessexes, they?ll do it,? has been the motto. And yes they were fine. However monarchs and heirs are more important in the scheme of things.

Unfortunately for the BRF their absences have been noted.  Did the late Queen ever attend any of Princess Beatrix?s birthdays or anniversaries when she was Queen? Queen Daisy has just celebrated her Jubilee. Have any members of the BRF been to Denmark (which isn?t exactly a million miles from Britain) to help her celebrate that? Not that I?ve read.

As for royal funerals, yes PP was utilised as he knew most of the royal families. What happens from now on? Send Camilla? And my point about funerals still stands. What happened at the Baden funeral was nasty. And has been commented on in royal forums and elsewhere. And if any senior members of the BRF are going to attend they?ve left it mighty late. If it is Anne that eventually turns up, then all well and good, though I feel that William should make an effort to attend his godfather?s funeral.

BRF didn?t attend Queen Marthage?s jubilee due death of Queen Elizabeth last September 2022

I don?t think Norway Royals household invited BRF for Princess Ingrid?s 18th birthday and included Prince George

Daisy has had birthdays and other Jubilees and neither the Queen nor Prince Charles attended any of those. And 10 years old Princess Estelle, the daughter of Sweden?s Crown Prss Victoria was in I-A of Norway?s photoshoot. And so was the toddler son of Gui and Stephanie of Luxembourg. Gui is heir to Grand Duke Henri, so Charles, like George, is heir to the heir. And so is Estelle.

Well Anne is a worthy representative of course, but it?s always odd that the BRF never bother to  send a contingent of four or five from the Royal House, as Europeans and Scandis often do, especially as Constantine had strong links to both Charles and William.

A hectic cleanup at the Tatoi cemetery to make it reasonable for the ceremony.

Anne is an excellent choice. Like her siblings she is a descendant of the Greek Royal Family through her late father the DoE. Also she has the ties to the Olympics as did the late King Constantine who win Greece's first gold medal at the 1960 Games in Rome.

QuoteI'm not at all surprised that William is not attending. William & Kate don't really attend big foreign royal events yet. And I think a big part of that is not wanting to pull focus from the event and allow the media attention to be on the person being honored, not William & Kate.

QuoteA lot of people were expecting Prince William to attend as King Constantine was his godfather.

I would like to point out that other Grandchildren like Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands are also not attending the funeral.
We have wait and see till confirmed from Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace or NOT!!

I do not think it would be very wise of BP/KP or anyone else to publish or say whether William and Catherine are going anywhere these days. It is to darn risky for them and those traveling with them.    If William goes then do it under the cover of darkness when leaving or however royals travel somewhere that is best to be kept secret.

I hadn't realized that the Greek Government had paid the Greek Royal Family for Tatoi and that they no longer own it and therefore it is not maintained. There have been proposals to revamp the property into a cultural center, but there doesn't appear to be the funding or the inclination to do anything at this point in time especially as the region is recovering from the wildfires and pandemic.

TATOI PALACE (http://www.parnitha-np.gr/tatoi_palace.htm)

QuoteIn 1994 a new regulation brought back the expropriation of 1973 and the whole estate became public again. After this regulation, the former owners have recoursed to the law and the case was closed in 2002 after a relevant decision of the European Court of Human Rights. By this decision, the former kings received 4,000,000,000 drachmas and Tatoi became Public Property permanently.

palace outbuildingThe Tatoi palace complex includes numerous outbuildings, such as personnel quarters, outposts, storehouses, mews, apiaries, stock farms etc., which are now derelict.

The long-lasting non-solving of the ownership issue of the Tatoi estate resulted to its neglect for years and consequently, to severe damage. The palace and several buildings can still be preserved and become excellent places for historical museums, environmental education centers, natural history museum, recreation grounds, etc. They are not far from Athens and the natural environment is ideal.

I did read about a couple of years ago that the Greek Govt intended to make the main house at Tatoi into some sort of culture centre. Even at that time I can remember thinking that the place had been allowed to tumble into such dilapidation that it would take an absolute fortune to fix.

I had also read years ago that while the King and his family were living in London that Constantine intended to use the international courts in Geneva to ask for proper restitution, that the Greeks had offered such a trifling amount for royal properties seized that he had refused outright to consider it. I suppose some kind of negotiated compromise was reached later as he never went to court over it as far as I know. However I did read that the compensation package was much smaller than he had wanted and the King and his supporters were disappointed.

I believe it has more to do with security, starting with International flight arrangements. There is no commercial flight with first or business class, where uniform can 'contain' its subject. Usually these two classes are easily contained because it doesn't surpass 10 seats each or 15 between both vs economy from 100 to 200 seats depending on the size of the airplane.

Oh for heavens sake! As if the Dutch and Spanish royal families for instance don?t face security risks when travelling! And King W-A?s eldest daughter had to stay away from going out with her student friends not too long ago due to a REAL threat of terrorism. If C+C and the Wales?s go on holidays somewhere abroad somehow all these so-called difficulties miraculously disappear! The truth is that they just couldn?t be bothered. And we saw it with the Margrave of Baden only recently as well.

The Netherlands has sent a ton of medical/humanitarian aid and Spain has been sending anti-aircraft missiles, tanks and other weapons to Ukraine for months. And please don?t try and make Harry the excuse for the tardiness of the BRF when it comes to attending their friends and relatives? funerals. Here's coverage from a Spanish television station if you are interested in viewing the funeral and burial. There were huge crowds lining the street and around the plaza in front of the cathedral. Queen Sofia and Princess Irene received a huge cheer when they arrived with KJCI, IE, IC and the children. Princes Pavlos, Nikolaus and Phillipos were at the cathedral to welcome the guests. Nearly every reigning and non-reigning European royal house/family sent a representative. Queen Anne Marie, her daughters-in-law and grandchildren were very warmly welcomed before and after the service. Plenty of applause for the late King Constantine. His orders and Olympic gold medal were on display throughout the service. CP Pavlos delivered the eulogy in Greek and summarized it in English.

Amazing watching the clips. And the turn out for the public for the funeral was touching. Truly a sad day.

The Brits really need to start being more present at these royal events. Even those they attend they send minor like the Wessexes. If it was such a security issue why is Anne there? It would be a risk to her as well even if not as important as William.  And she is one of the hardest working members of that family. One can hardly argue she likely didn't have to rearrange her schedule to go as well. It would have been nice if William had attended his godfather's funeral with his aunt and Gabrielle. Leave Kate behind if really that concerned.

Lady Gabriella seems to be the only godchild who attended. But the parents of his godchildren, the people who actually chose the man to have a role in his children's lives, were in attendance.

One more personal reason that the Princess Royal might have been the attendee was that she like Sweden's Princess Cristina (also in attendance today) was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Constantine and Anne Marie. Obviously Irene was there and I believe that Romania's Margareta was supposed to be there but only Radu was in attendance today. (Nicolae was there privately.)

Here's the list of their attendants: bridesmaids and crown bearers. (Those that I "bolded" were present today at the funeral.) The Crown Prince of Sweden is now King CG.

I think some spectators missed out on filing past the coffin and paying their respects, due to time limits. I hope the Greek government took notice. And hopefully the widowed Queen might spend a little time in Denmark with her sisters in coming months. I know it?s been said Crown Prince Pavlos will be relocating to Greece in the future, we will have to wait to see if that will come to pass, but perhaps Queen Anne Marie might benefit from being with her birth family for a while.

Yes. It appears that mourners had a limited time to pay their respects.

I believe that Anne Marie will keep the Athens apartment,  but will divide time between Denmark, The UK and Greece in the future.

Oh yes? I didn?t expect either King Charles or the Wales?s to go to the funeral. Almost all the other European/Scandi royal Houses turned out in force, Kings, Queens, Heirs in bulk, just not the BRF. Godparent, close friend, doesn?t matter apparently. Can?t be bothered!

I think it has more to do with what the gov tells them and their security right now.  After we here do not know that intelligence has come down regarding the Taliban or anyone else.  Other royal families right now do not have threats against them that we know of.  Also I am wondering if going to a funeral of a royal from another country makes some face their own immortality.

I wouldn't know about their security arrangement, what I do know is the governments of those countries aren't invested as UK with Ukraine or have a rogue member enticing the Taliban.

Absolutely that has to be taken into consideration in all of Charles and William's events now..a rouge member has put the entire royal family and country and military at risk. That is NO laughing matter either.

Please let us know when was the last time William, Catherine and Charles and Camilla went on a holiday somewhere abroad and Scotland is not out of the country or abroad either?

Sure. IMO their absence had to do more with the British government and the President of Cyprus being in the UK yesterday. Cyprus continues to be a difficult situation between Greece and Turkey and the UK does have military bases there.  I believe that the King and the PoW were advised not to travel to the funeral by the Foreign Office due to their constitutional positions. However sending the Princess Royal as an official representative was an acceptable choice for the FO. Sometimes in a Constitutional Monarchy, the government does have the final say on overseas royal travel for private events. For example Spain has previously limited the former King and Queen's visits to the UK over Gibraltar. Because of the dispute in 1981,  JC and Sofia were not permitted to attend Charles and Diana's wedding.

Didn't Catherine's brother get married in 2013 some time? That is not recent is it?  I don't think they are taking holidays all the time like they used to either.

Oh just a side note, how is the weather down there? Mother Nature sure is on a warpath lately. I can't think of a British royal wedding from 2013. Zara and Mike married in the summer of 2011.

@Nightowl-Sweden's Princess Madeline and Mr. Christopher O'Neil is the only "big" royal wedding that I can find for 2013.

In the end, while I would have liked to see either KCIII or the PoW present yesterday, the PssR had many personal connections to the late King of Greece. They both have common ancestors from the Greek Royal Family. Anne was one of the bridesmaids when Constantine and Anne Marie married. Anne and Constantine were both Olympic athletes and worked together at the IOC. The Greek Royals lived in the UK for decades etc... William reportedly requested that Lady Gabriella Kingston represent him at the funeral as they were both Godchildren of the late King and have family ties to the Greek Royals.

I believe that the Spanish royals were visibly touched by the reception that Queen Sofia received yesterday in Athens. While they would have been familiar with this in Spain, I sensed that Elena, Cristina and their children were a bit amazed to see and hear their mother/grandmother being so warmly greeted by the crowds. Even JC seemed to be a little surprised himself. Perhaps it brought back some fond memories of their Athens wedding day in 1962 for JC and Sofia.

Update on the Greek Royal Family.

Queen Anne Marie-To remain in Athens.
Princess Alexa and Carlos will stay in the Canary Islands.
CP Pavlos and CPss Marie Chantal-London/NYC with more frequent trips to Greece.
Prince Nickolaos and Princess Tatiana-Remain in Athens where they have lived since they married.
Princess Teodora and fiance Matthew Kumar-Los Angeles? London? NYC?
Prince Phillippos and Princess Nina ?

Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and Marie-Chantal will NOT move to Athens (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11666421/amp/Crown-Prince-Pavlos-Greece-Marie-Chantal-NOT-Athens.html)

QuoteCrown Prince Pavlos of Greece and his wife Crown Princess Marie-Chantal will not be moving to Athens following the death of King Constantine, sources have claimed.

Prince William's godfather and the nephew of the Duke of Edinburgh, King Constantine II of Greece passed away from a stroke earlier this month at the age of 82.

Now a royal aide has confirmed to Danish publication, Billed Bladet, that his wife Anne-Marie has no intention of leaving Athens.

Meanwhile sources told HOLA that Pavlos and Marie-Chantal, who usually split their time between London and New York, plan to spend an extended period of time in the city in order to support Anne-Marie.

I see the Fail is to the fore in ?reporting? this, but apparently the local Press did it first. I don?t believe that Queen Anne Marie ever said she was leaving Athens did she? What was speculated (and I still believe) is that she may well spend some periods of time with her sisters in Denmark to just relax. It would look pretty bad for the GRF for the former Queen to be moving away after her husband?s death, and AM has always been incredibly loyal.

As for Pavlos and MC, they have business interests elsewhere that would be very inconvenient to pursue in Athens. I just don?t believe they would live in Greece fulltime, anyway. If the ex Queen becomes very frail there will be long visits on both sides, but that?s all, imo anyway.

There really is no point of Pavlos and Chantal moving to Greece. Unlike other former houses like Romania, the Greeks don't have an unofficial role in the country. They are completely private citizens there.

It made sense Constantine and Anne Marie returned. Other then a few years during WWII, he spent the first 27 years of life there. He and Anne Marie were married there. He actually was king, unlike his son who will only ever be titular.

Pavlos may have been born there but he was only seven months old when they fled the country and has never lived there since. Like Prince Philip, he was a Greek prince in little but name. He spent longer in Rome (till 6) and with his grandmother Ingrid in Denmark (a year) then he has in Greece. He and his family have their work, home, lives and friends in the UK.

Now if like Romania, there was a role to take up from his father yes it would make sense. But its pointless to uproot their lives for it now.

I have to agree. Unlike Romania, Serbia, Portugal and to some extent Bulgaria, there doesn't appear to be a path forward for an "unofficial but somewhat official" presence for the  Greek Royal Family at this time.

Memorial services for the late King Constantine are being planned for Athens and London.

Memorial services planned for King Constantine in Athens and London ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/greece/memorial-services-planned-for-king-constantine-in-athens-and-london-186068/)

QuoteMemorial services for Constantine II, the last King of Greece, are set to be held in the coming months.

The first will be in Athens in February when the official royal mourning period for Constantine II comes to an end. Constantine died on January 10th 2023 and was buried from the Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens on January 16th 2023. A memorial service will take place forty days after the king?s death, on February 19th 2023.

That service will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens. Constantine?s widow, Queen Anne-Marie, along with their eldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos, will lead mourners. All of Constantine?s children and grandchildren will all take part. His sisters, Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Irene of Greece are also expected to attend. Afterwards, a small ceremony will be held at the tomb of the late king in the grounds of Tatoi Palace.

For Crown Prince Pavlos and his siblings, it is important to be there for their mother Queen Anne-Marie during a difficult time.

Crown Prince Pavlos left Greece this week to return to his home in New York. There are varying reports over whether he will move permanently to Greece now that he is head of the royal family. However, there will be no statements or interviews about that until at least the middle of February, when the 40 day mourning period is over.

It?s also expected that there will be a memorial service for King Constantine in London in the coming months. Journalist Andreas Mogas said the ceremony is expected to take place and see relatives who couldn?t attend the funeral in Athens attend, most likely to include King Charles III and the Prince of Wales.

CP Pavlos granted an interview with Pont du Vu magazine and shared his thanks to the people of Greece and his future plans as head of the family. The view is what I believe most people expected it to be and IMO it's a reasonable one.

Crown Prince Pavlos talks about family?s future in Greece ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/greece/crown-prince-pavlos-talks-about-familys-future-in-greece-186695/)

Quotecrown Prince Pavlos of Greece has given his first interview since the death of his father, King Constantine II.

The Crown Prince shared his view of his family?s future in Greece and his own role as the head of the Greek Royal Family in an interview with the French magazine Point de Vue.

Pavlos was questioned on how he imagined his role as the head of the Royal House, to which he responded: ?I inherited this role from my father, not associated with any responsibility at the state level, just at a family level. My role will be ? to be a good example to the family. We will continue to be united and keep strong ties with our country.?

The Crown Prince stressed that he would not interfere in Greek state affairs. He said neither he nor his son, Prince Constantine Alexios, would take on any official roles. However, he did share that he hopes that his son follows in the late monarch?s footsteps in being a good person.

Crown Prince Pavlos received the French magazine for the interview in Athens during the commemoration of the 40th day since the passing of his father. He took the opportunity to thank the Greek people for their support and promised that he would spend more time in his country of birth. The royal currently resides in New York.

Crown Prince Pavlos said: ?I would thank the Greek people for the respect they have shown to my father and to us. Whether people are royalists or not does not matter. They paid tribute to a historical figure, a part of Greek history. On behalf of my family, I thank them from the bottom of my heart.?

Greek princes teams up for charity ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/greece/greek-princes-teams-up-for-charity-190007/)

QuoteFollowing the death of King Constantine II earlier this year, many members of the Greek royal family have been spending more time in their homeland. Now, the king?s younger sons, Prince Philippos and Prince Nikolaos of Greece, have teamed up for a charity project in the eastern Greek islands.

Prince Philippos and Prince Nikolaos are attending the 13th campaign of Axion Hellas. Prince Nikolaos has previously attended this charity campaign several times before. This is his brother Prince Philippos first time attending the campaign.

More than 150 volunteers, including 54 volunteer doctors with a range of different specialties, are providing services to the residents of the Greek islands of Heraklia, Halki, Symi, Pserimos and Kimolos. Axion Hellas which have seen an influx of immigrants arriving in recent times.

Prince Nikolaos said: ?We believe in collaboration, and we are not doing it all by ourselves. We are transferring educational programs to the coastal islands of Greece. I just came out to talk to you, from a program-based course started by Kate Kennedy, daughter of the late Robert Kennedy. Through this, learning children about human rights.?

The prince continued: ?We all voluntarily participate in the organization. No one gets paid. Our fee is the warmth with which we are welcomed. This morning the kindergarten children said good morning to us in song. They filled our souls with positive energy. This recharges our batteries. I love all the islands equally.?

The two eldest sons of the late King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie have given an interview in Greece. Prince Nikolaos lives in the country and appears to be more comfortable speaking Greek than his older brother Crown Prince Pavlos.

Yes, it was interesting that the two brothers decided to do a joint interview. Of course Pavlos grew up in London and lives mainly in the US with his wife, but I can?t imagine that King Constantine didn?t insist on his children, especially his heir, speaking Greek when they lived together as a family. Pavlos?s rustiness with the Greek language must have come in the last decade or so.

@Curryong - I know that all of KC and QAM's children attended a bilingual Greek-English school that was established in London but has since closed. However, like you mention CP Pavlos' rustiness has come with a lack of day to day use of the language. KC's cousin Prince Michael has mentioned in the past that his cousin was "the most Greek" member of the royal family and definitely had a good command of the language.

Observations about the BRF and attendance at the memorial service for the late King Constantine by Richard Kay of the DM. They turned up (many of them, but not the Edinburghs who were skiing, or William who gave 46 mins notice of his non-attendance at the service. )

Kay describes the 'grinning' Andrew, pushing himself forward in leading the BRF family into St George's with Fergie (I can just imagine the howls of outrage if Harry and Meghan had been there and done something like that! The heavens would have erupted!)

Kay also accurately describes most of the British royals as an elderly and 'uninspiring' bunch in this gloomy article. The tabloids are missing all those fabulous clicks and royal gossip and I can imagine there is gloom around the newsrooms of these rags!

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/royals/article-13137805/Richard-Kay-Royals-crisis-charles-kate-william-harry-camilla.html

RICHARD KAY: Never in memory have the royals had so many troubles at once. If not yet a crisis for the House of Windsor, it's getting perilously close...

'Nine months on, the post-Coronation glow that enveloped the country at the prospect of a new reign under King Charles III has dissipated.

And gazing at the remnants of our first family on display at Windsor this week it was impossible to escape the conclusion that it has suddenly become a threadbare institution.

Princess Anne, of course, remains a tower of strength. But for all her resilience, she is 73; sprightly, but still an age when most women have long left behind the kind of regular working hours she puts in.

The other working royals who were visible on duty on Tuesday are even older — the Duke of Gloucester is 79, the increasingly frail Duke of Kent is 88 and his sister, the stylish Princess Alexandra who was taken into St George's in a wheelchair to attend, is 87. These then — together with Prince Edward and Sophie who were not present at the service — are the public faces of the Royal Family. Through no fault of their own, they are hardly an inspiring bunch.'

Apparently Nicholas Medford-Mills, the son of Margareta's sister Elena, took part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards himself when at school in England. He was spoken of often meeting members of the Danish-Greek royal family and other royals in the past and may well end up as heir again, especially as both his mother and aunt are now elderly.
