Title: Charles and Camilla Tour of Canada 2014
Post by: PrincessOfPeace on April 11, 2014, 10:44:03 PM
QuoteThe Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will carry out a Royal Tour of Canada next month, Clarence House confirm. The royal couple will stop in Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island.

This will be Charles's 17th visit to Canada and the third for Camilla. Two years the royal couple travelled to New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan on a four-day tour. The couple visited Canada in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

"I am pleased that Their Royal Highnesses will be joining us in a few months-time, as Canada enters a five-year period of significant national celebrations," Prime Minister Stephen Harper commented in a news release.

^^It feels like they are (Wessexs last month, Cambridges this, Charles/Cam next, Harry next and June)-- which is odd because there were a ton for the Jubilee, so we should be used to them. Still, it feels like a lot!

I wonder if it has to do with the Queen's old age and health?  I would be surprised if she took on any more tours, and I think that the monarchy knows that there is at least some sentiment in their commonwealth countries that they are going to consider breaking away and not having a British head of state after the Queen dies.

I agree that there does seem to be many tours being undertaken or are in the planning stages. It does seem a bit surprising after the Windsor World Tour in 2012 for the Jubilee.

The thing to remember about tours to the realms is that the host country must first invite the royals. It isn't a case of Charles forcing himself on Canada, the Government of Canada invited him and wants him to visit.

The realms are realms for a reason. If it was only the Queen who is popular other royals wouldn't receive invitations to visit.

C&C's Canadian tour is only 4 days.   It is a mini tour not a major tour.

The many visits abroad by several members of the Royal Family reflects the fact that Her Majesty The Queen is slowly reducing her commitments abroad. For instance, her visit to Rome this month was the first such visit abroad since 2011. I am not saying she won't travel again, but what she will do is carefully select her schedule when it involves travel.

As for the visit to Canada by the Prince and Princess of Wales! What wonderful news, especially for Canadians as it means they get their future King on their national day. :)

The Prince of Wales has a wonderful relationship with Canada

QuoteCanada is one of Her Majesty's Realms, and as such The Prince of Wales is Heir to The Canadian Throne.

The Prince of Wales has often spoken of his life-long affinity with Canada.

In 1996 he declared: "Every time I come to Canada, and I've been here many times since 1970, a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream and, from there, straight into my heart."

During his 15 visits to Canada, The Prince has visited every Province and, counting his visits to communities in Nunavut that took place before its creation in 1999, every Territory as well.

His Royal Highness serves as Colonel-in-Chief to seven Canadian regiments: the Air Reserve of Canada, Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians), the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the Royal Regiment of Canada, the Royal Canadian Dragoons, the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada and the Toronto Scottish Regiment (Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Own).

... The Duchess of Cornwall has also taken on the Colonelcy-in-Chief of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada and visited the regiment during their last visit to Canada in 2012 which was made to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee with the Canadian people.

Yes, it  seems to be many tours.

TPTB be  in The UK  and  Commonwealth nations want, need that pr thing to go on.
I know  you all the nations must invite them, but  TPTB there work with the  The Uk/Monarchy, I assume.
QEII, cannot, it is not best  for her and PP  at their ages to  go to overseas  tours or even out of The UK.
She has her family to do that.

I assume Camilla can attend this tour. No, she  will not  be over, nor forget her brother. Still, there will be some time between his funeral and  her tour  for  her to  ok in public.

He   was  her brother.  Her neice  has a  mother and  aunt (the other sister)  there  so  Camillla  can resume her public life..

The reports abouther brother is that he was his own man. Had his own life well before PCand C  got married.  Was a  good fahter and ex husband even.

For he leaves a very young, rich  daughter, that is sad.

The Department of Canadian Heritage budgets x amount of money yearly for royal tours. It works alongside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Britain to hammer out the details of the itinerary along with some input from the royals.

The same thing occurred with the Cambridges in Australia and New Zealand. The host realm picks up the tab and decide on most of the itinerary.
Because some realms are larger than others, it often takes multiple tours over many years to visit all areas.

The Cambridges flew on a RCAF jet for their visit to Canada and RAAF provided the flight to and from Australia.

It makes complete sense because HM is Queen of the individual realms independent of her role of Queen of the UK.

According the Prince of Wales official website, this will be the sixteenth time he has visited Canada.

Quote"Nova Scotia is proud to be the first stop for the Royal Couple and we're looking forward to sharing our vibrant history and culture with them," said Premier Stephen McNeil. "Victoria Day weekend is a time to celebrate with family and friends and there will be plenty of opportunity to share what makes our province so unique. Not only will our shared heritage be front and centre during the tour, so will the traditions that keep our communities strong."

Their Royal Highnesses will arrive at Halifax Stanfield International Airport at 6:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 18.

Governor General David Johnston, Premier Stephen McNeil and other dignitaries will officially welcome the Royal Couple to Canada at 10 a.m., Monday, May 19, at Grand Parade with a 21-gun-salute, a guard of honour from the Canadian Armed Forces, and a band and choral performance.

QuoteAs you know, TRH will be visiting Canada for four days from 18th – 21st May.  The focus of this Royal Tour will be highlighting Canadian achievement – past and present, and looking to the future.

This will be the 16th time that The Prince of Wales has visited Canada since his first visit in 1970 with Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne.  It's worth noting that in the past five years, The Prince and The Duchess will have visited Canada together three times, which shows their commitment to, and deep affection for, the Canadian people.

This time, The Prince and The Duchess will visit three Canadian provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Manitoba and six communities: Halifax and Pictou County in Nova Scotia (18th and 19th May); Charlottetown, Bonshaw and Cornwall in Prince Edward Island (19th and 20th May) and Winnipeg in Manitoba (20th and 21st May).  The Prince last visited Manitoba in 1996 and Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 1983.  The Duchess has not previously visited any of the three provinces.

are not the tours linked to the WWI commemorative events?  So there will then be a lot more of them - and multiple visits.  Harry and Will for example - will be going back to Australia in a year for Gallipoli commemorations.  There will be multiple voists to France and Belgium too.  So I think it is more than usual but because of these anniversaries.

Yep.  Some of those visits can't be more than 10 - 20 minutes.  There is lots of driving in between.  For example, it is a 40 min drive from Bonshaw Park to the airport and Charles only has 75 minutes to visit the park and get to the plane.

QuoteThe Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will begin their Canadian tour in Halifax on Sunday May 18th.

Not surprisingly, with a visit of this significance comes a lot of planning and attention to detail.

Lane Farguson of the Halifax Port Authority said, " As you can imagine it has been a very busy few weeks since we found out the Royal couple would be here, we are doing our best to make sure the property is in tip top shape".

The Mounties will be accompanying the couple on each stop of their tour and Sgt Alain LeBlanc said, "It's a balance, you know, between ensuring their protection yet also respecting the rights of the public to take photos and possibly talk to them too".

City staff are busy prepping the Public Gardens in downtown Halifax, where Prince Charles will plant an English oak tree adjacent to the oak tree planted by his Grandfather, King George VI, 75 years ago. HRM Urban forester John Simmons said, "We've condensed the work we do in a month and a half in to two weeks. Everything is looking good, we'll have to cut the grass prior to the arrival".

QuotePrime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. His Royal Highness was sworn in as a Privy Councillor during an audience with His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, at Government House, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Privy Councillors are members of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, established under the Constitution Act, 1867 to advise the Government of Canada. The Privy Council includes all past and present Ministers, as well as a number of select persons honoured for their contributions to Canada. Members are appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

QuoteThe Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will arrive in Canada Sunday for a four-day visit.

During the trip, Prince Charles and Camilla will travel to Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

This royal tour marks the 150th anniversary of the 1864 conferences in Charlottetown and Quebec City that led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada, and the 100th anniversary of First World War. The visit also celebrates the anniversary of Queen Victoria's birthday.

Usually George is pretty hard hitting but in this case the questions were preapproved.

I'd think any pre-approval of questions steers an interview into well controlled PR grounds rather than honest reporting.

Yep.  I would love a no hold back interview by Stroumie.  It would be interesting to see how PC would do.

QuotePrince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, arrived in Canada tonight on a break-neck tour of the country.

The royal couple will visit three provinces, six towns and cities and undertake a staggering 41 engagements in just three days.

The heir to throne is notorious for the pace of his foreign trips on behalf of the UK government, packing more into them than any other member of the Royal Family.

But this latest trip to Canada - his 17th to the country where his mother, the Queen, is still head of state - is challenging by even his standards.

Charles and Camilla arrived on a Canadian Air Force Jet in Halifax tonight where they were greeted at the international airport by dignitaries and then met with the Governor General, the monarch's representative in the country.

^^^ It is indeed a great honour

Prince Charles creates his own Canadian legacy

QuoteThe variety of Canadians on the long list of people Prince Charles is trying to help through his charity work seem to have little in common. Among them are sheep farmers, disadvantaged youth and ex-soldiers whose military service has ended.

At least over the next few days they will have the full attention of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall as they make a whistle stop tour of Canada, beginning on Sunday evening in Halifax and concluding Wednesday night in Winnipeg.

In an exclusive CBC interview with George Stroumboulopoulos ahead of the visit, Prince Charles said he "feels a great interest with everything that goes on in Canada". He continued by saying: "fitting everything into the schedule when I visit Canada is getting more and more difficult...it gets busier and busier every time I am here because I have more organisations that I am involved with and take an interest in".

QuoteCold and rainy weather could not dampen the spirits of royal watchers this morning, as they made their way to Grand Parade next to Halifax's City Hall, since 6:30am, for the official welcoming of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to Canada and Nova Scotia on this, their third Canadian tour in four years.

An impressive military parade entertained the large crowds gathered around the Cenotaph – the empty tomb in honour of those whose remains are not present – as the motorcade made its way into the historic military square.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Minister of Defense and Attorney General of Canada Peter Mackay welcomed the royal guests, and led them through a receiving line of dignitaries, military members and Aboriginal elders.

Their Royal Highnesses were greeted with full military honours including a heart-pounding "21-gun salute and the breaking of His Royal Highness's Canadian Flag," as The Prince inspected the soldiers, sailors and airmen of Her Majesty's Canadian Armed Forces.

QuoteThe Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall landed in Prince Edward Island at the Charlottetown airport at about 6:45 p.m. (ADT) on Monday evening. The light rain and cooler temperatures did not dampen the spirit of the official delegation that greeted the Royal couple upon their arrival.

Lt.-Gov. Frank Lewis, Premier Robert Ghiz, federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea and other dignitaries welcomed Charles and Camilla to Prince Edward Island as they arrived from their day earlier in Pictou and Halifax.

"It was really good to meet the prince and his wife," Cameron Good, a student who also celebrated his 14th birthday on Monday commented after presenting the couple flowers. He added: "I was really excited. I'm going to tell my friends at school tomorrow that I met the prince. I'm really happy."

Bagpipers from the College of Piping played for Charles and Camilla as they received officials in the welcoming delegation.

QuoteA Speech by HRH The Prince of Wales at the Official Arrival Ceremony in Canada

Your Excellencies, Minister, Your Honours, Premier, Distinguished guests,

Thank you Governor General, Minister and Premier for your most generous words of welcome.

I do also want to thank all of you ladies and gentlemen for coming here to welcome my wife and myself on our return to this great country.

It is, as always, a special joy to be back in Canada again - a place that is very dear to us both - this time to be in Canada's historic ocean gateway to the Atlantic at the official start of summer!  I have fond memories of coming to Halifax forty-two years ago, when I was then serving in the Royal Navy.  On that occasion, I have to admit, my visit was due to an act of God:  mechanical failure of the ship in which I was serrving. In fact a fishing net and miles of rope and cable round the propellor shaft.  (An American net, of course!).  I'm glad that I was invited this time!

As members of your Canadian Royal Family, we are always made to feel so much at home in Canada and are greatly touched by the warmth of your welcome.

QuoteIn His Own Words: Prince Charles on His Charities and Love for Canada

I suspect the truth is that I am one of those people who has never been very good at sitting back and expecting others to sort out problems. I like to try and solve them. From the very beginning I have wanted to improve the lives of others and build sustainable communities.

For example, I have long believed in the enormous difference that can be made to young people's lives, and the development of their true potential, if they are given the opportunities to develop their confidence, build their own businesses, and become leaders in their communities. I have also seen the powerful impact that CEOs can have beyond the boardroom if they are exposed to challenges in their communities and then work together to solve them.

I established my Prince's Charities Canada so that I could connect the accomplishments of my charities in the U.K. and across the world with organizations in Canada in order to make a difference in the lives of Canadians.

Royal visit 2014: Prince Charles gives soldiers business 'wings' for life after military

Quotef things go according to plan, naval Lt. Scott Harrigan will meet Prince Charles for the third time today, as he escorts the heir to the throne around the Military Family Resource Centre in Halifax.

For Harrigan, it's an honour of course, but it is also a chance to show how grateful he is for the way Charles has, indirectly, been helping him move toward a new life after his military service ends.

The 40-year-old Harrigan has served with the Canadian Forces in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Haiti, and is one of nearly 400 people who have taken part in Operation Entrepreneur, an initiative of Charles's Canadian charity.

"I don't think people realize the depth to which he takes part in these things and how closely he follows them," says Harrigan. "I think it's very cool that he does this."

Charles will be honoured today with award to recognise his contribution to Canadian Society during third day of tour
The Prince and Duchess of Cornwall are also due to meet Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth athletes

QuotePrince Charles joked about being in the Flintstones cartoon when he met carpentry students during his and the Duchess of Cornwall's second day of their whirlwind tour of Canada.

Charles was handed a huge mallet used to demonstrate how early houses were built during a tour of a workshop at Holland College, in Charlottetown.

'It's the Flintstones,' Charles joked as he lifted the wooden hammer.

He pulled a stern face as he posed for photographers holding the mallet.

'This is what you've all been waiting for,' Charles said. 'That's why they've all come.'

The royal couple had earlier today embarked on the second day of their tour as they mean to go on – cramming in eleven packed public engagements.

Some confuse the role as The Prince of Wales and that of Monarch as The Prince of Wales he has more freedom to speak his mind and why shouldn't he especially when he speaks what a lot of people are thinking? As a Monarch he will keep his mouth shut which personally I think isn't right or why have a Monarch at all?
Title: Re: Charles and Camilla Tour of Canada 2014

The prince of Wales is not and never will be a private person, he is the Monarch To Be, he cannot unsay what he says and wipe the slate clean to pretend he is above it all when he is Monarch after making every effort to meddle and leave his opinion everywhere and very publicly affect Britain's international relations, as future Monarch he is preparing for the role of Monarch not passing the time wreaking havoc until it happens... The fact that he is not Monarch YET does not mean he should consider his mouth to be on a drunken spring break.

The trouble is, I think, that he is speaking his mind about a political situation which is both delicate and volatile. He isn't giving an opinion on say architecture or ecology. He might think he has a firm grasp on happenings in the Ukraine, (and he might have for all I know,) but what if he hasn't?

What if those remarks cause embarrassment to the British Government, to the British Ambassador in Moscow? Better to remain silent, under the circumstances, IMO.

QuoteDay Three: Canada Royal Visit (and Speech)

The widening gap between rich and poor is one of the 'huge challenges' facing the world, The Prince of Wales said today as he was honoured for his contribution to Canadian society.

His Royal Highness was awarded an honorary Symons Medal  - usually reserved for Canadians - at an arts centre whichTthe Queen officially opened 50 years ago in Charlottetown, Canada.

Addressing guests at the event, The Prince said becoming a grandfather had brought into 'sharper focus' the need to address economic and environmental problems:

'I am sure that you will agree that the world faces huge challenges but has enormous opportunities," he said.

'Youth unemployment, the widening gap between rich and poor, the constant struggle to advance human rights and democracy, the need to open the doors of opportunity for women and young girls around the world, the impact we can expect from climate change, the dangers of over-fishing, of deforestation and the rapid urbanisation of the world's equally rapidly expanding population - these are all the kind of issues that challenge us.

QuoteCharles and Camilla "were in on the joke,'' says Wade Lynch

A comic impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II Monday in Charlottetown in front of her son Prince Charles may have been a royal mistake.

The decision to have actor Wade Lynch reprise his familiar role has sparked negative, even angry, feedback from the public.

Tasteless, insulting and shameful are among the descriptions given to the tongue-in-cheek performance watched by Charles and his wife Camilla. However, others said they enjoyed the show and didn't express any concerns about the performance.

Prince Charles looked to be having a banging good time as he visited a woodwork department in Charlottetown, Canada on Tuesday.
The future King and his wife Camilla were on the third day of their royal tour of the country, when they paid a visit to Holland College.

As Charles, 65, stopped by the community college's centre for applied science and technology, he chatted to students and eagerly took part in a carpentry workshop.

"It's the Flintstones," Charles joked as he picked up a mallet. The royal appeared to struggle slightly as he lifted the heavy load and tried to hammer in a peg, saying, "This is what you've all been waiting for," before breaking into laughter at his attempt.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were greeted by students an event to celebrate 'Aerospace and Innovation in Manitoba' at Stevenson Hangar in Winnipeg.

Their Royal Highnesses, accompanied by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke to the youngsters as they learned about the aerospace and aviation industry. The Prince and The Duchess were given the chance to test the flight of their own paper planes by throwing them at a target.

His Royal Highness asked one group of students whether they enjoyed learning about science and technology at the aircraft hangar.

'It beats sitting in the classroom,' he joked.

I am most grateful to Your Honour and to you, Premier, for your very generous and kind words of welcome. I cannot tell you what a special privilege it is to be able to honour today some of your finest citizens from across the Province in the Order of Manitoba.  Each one of these worthy recipients has, in his or her own special way, greatly enriched this Province and made an enormous difference to the lives of others.

Ladies and Gentlemen, my wife and I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations and thanks to you all for your outstanding accomplishments.

I know very well of the reputation for extraordinary resilience acquired by the citizens of Manitoba, a Province so often tested by adversity.  By way of a reminder, on our way to Winnipeg yesterday evening we flew over Duff's Ditch, an innovative and forward-looking initiative of the 1960s that continues to defend this community against the might of the Red River.

QuoteThe mood was one of sheer excitement as The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall celebrated 'Aerospace and Aviation in Manitoba Day' at Red River College's Aviation Campus on Wednesday, upon embarking on the last leg of their third royal tour to Canada.

Joined by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen, Their Royal Highnesses were besieged with cheers and the waving of flags as over 300 elementary schoolchildren joyfully welcomed them into the Stevenson Hangar, an aircraft maintenance training facility at the Winnipeg Airport.

This was an opportunity for the royal couple to witness firsthand the unique partnerships between industry and educational stakeholders in Manitoba's aerospace and aviation sectors, as well as the initiatives that exist to encourage young people to consider pursuing education and careers in these fields.

The royal couple met with dignitaries, military personnel and aviation industry workers, but were especially eager to interact with Grade 6 schoolchildren whose science projects were prominently displayed throughout the hangar.

QuoteDrag 'Queen' Leaves Charles Unamused: Prince Grimaces As He Is Forced to Sit Through Excruciating Male Impersonation of His Mother  (VIDEO)

The excruciating moment Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were forced to watch a male comedian dress up as the Queen and prance around on stage has been caught on camera.

The royal couple can hardly conceal their disgust in the video, filmed at an official event in Charlottetown on Canada's Prince Edward Island on Monday night.

As Canadian funnyman Wade Lynch impersonates Her Majesty, the pair remain stonefaced and grimace when the fake Queen declares: 'There are two members of our audience that call me by quite another name and that is of course "Mummy." Hello kids. Surprise.'

Prince Edward Island's Premier Robert Ghiz, sitting immediately to Camilla's left, was clearly humiliated at the entertainment officials chose to dish up to their special guests.

QuotePrince of Wales Tries Out Google Glass As He Visits Canada's 'Innovation Alley'

Google Glass has been given the Royal seal of approval after the Prince of Wales tried Google's controversial eyewear on his tour of Canada.  Charles was visiting an area known as Innovation Alley on Adelaide Street, where a number of local startups have their offices.

He donned a pair of the smart specs to try out an app designed to help workmen keep up with the jobs they have to do.

Charles tried out the energy sector app VisualSpection, where he was shown a preview by founder David Enns.  The Google Glasses app is designed to improve the productivity and accuracy of utility workers inspecting and reporting problems in the field.

QuoteCharles Given Mini Flying Jacket for Prince George So He Can Follow In William's Footsteps

He may be just 10 months old, but Prince George is already gearing up to fly a plane like his father.  And it seems granddad Prince Charles - who was handed a mini flying jacket for the royal infant - didn't know what to think of the prospect.

Holding up the gift from Stevenson Campus Air Hanger in Winnipeg, Canada, the Prince of Wales stared for a few moments before finally breaking out into a chuckle.

George's father, Prince William, has been an RAF pilot for five years, and is now training to pass his commercial flying licence.  And with his new jacket, it seems the little infant is all set to carry on the tradition.

QuotePrince Charles Builds Rapport with Polar Bear Amid Putin Furore  (VIDEO)

The heir to the throne may have angered Russia by comparing Vladimir Putin to Hitler but at least one bear enjoys his company as he visits a zoo in Canada.

Prince Charles visited Assiniboine Park Zoo in Manitoba, Canada, where he had a rare opportunity to feed a polar bear.  He used a pair of long metal tongs to pinch a small fish, then fed it through a metal fence to the polar bear who was awaiting the meal.

When asked if it was the first polar bear he has fed, Charles responded with a chuckle, saying, "I don't do it very often."

Don't see George wearing that jacket for too long. He's going to grow out of it very quickly.
