Scar-face, the notorious Duke of Cumberland, even worse than his 'Butcher' uncle, who had the same title. Scandal-ridden and sinister, it was believed that even his brother King George IV was afraid of him. Frederika was rumoured to be an ogress, who had poisoned her first husband!

Today's British tabloids would have had a field day with King George III's offspring. Rumours of illicit love affairs and illegitimate children even among his closeted away daughters. Streams of illegitimate progeny among his sons.

Marriages against the contravention of the Royal Marriages Act with at least two of the sons including the heir, who later committed bigamy with Caroline of Brunswick. This was followed years later by a very sordid legal attack on his wife's morals when he publicly wished to divorce her.

Then there was the attack on Prince Ernest the Duke of Cumberland by his valet in the middle of the night, the victim bore scars on his face for the rest of his life and the valet slit his own throat. Rumours abounded about his motivations. Ernest was subject to many rumours for the rest of his life, including that he intended to make a grab for the Throne in 1837 and imprison the true heir Victoria in the Tower!

Ernest Augustus became King of Hanover in 1837 because that monarchy followed the Salic Law where a female would not inherit the throne.

Yes, Ernest and his wife and family settled down quite well in Hannover. He was, to the astonishment of the British, quite popular there. His eyesight in one eye faded thanks to a deep sabre cut when he was a soldier, and his son George, who succeeded him for a while as King until he came a cropper against the Prussians, was of course completely blind due to a childhood accident.

Forgot to add, Ernest spent quite a bit of time in England after he became King, bothering his niece Queen Victoria and ultimately suing her for the dead Princess Charlotte's jewels, which he believed belonged to the Crown of Hanover. In the end she had to hand them over.

Queen Charlotte's jewellery, that should be!

It was quite a funny little dispute, really. Victoria didn't have huge amounts of jewellery as a young Queen, though she did end up keeping most of the Hanoverian jewels she inherited from William IV/Queen Adelaide

However in 1857, as a result of the law suit she returned Queen Charlotte's diamond wedding crown, diamond stomacher and diamond necklace and cross to the King of Hanover in full settlement of the dispute.

The jewels in question had been left to the 'Butcher' Duke of Cumberland by his father, George II. The Duke then sold them to his nephew, George III, in 1761. George III gave them to Queen Charlotte as a wedding gift and she left them to 'the House of Hanover' after her death in 1818. Victoria was not then born and Queen Charlotte obviously had expected a grandson to take over both the British throne and that of Hanover.

Because of the Salic Law passed in the German principalities and kingdoms, Victoria could not succeed to the throne of Hanover. Her uncle, Scarface Ernst-Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, demanded half of William IV's jewel collection, as the new King of Hanover and a son of Queen Charlotte. Victoria probably did owe him some of the jewels, but refused to cooperate for many years. However, she finally capitulated.
