She will be giving up her rank no matter who she marries. This happens to all of the princesses. However she would probably not receive the one time financial compensation.

Japan?s 14-year-old Prince Hisahito receives honourable mention in literature contest ? Royal Central

QuoteJapan?s Prince Hisahito of Akishino received an honorable mention for his non-fiction writing submission to a children?s non-fiction literature contest.

The 14-year-old?s work was chosen out of 357 contest entries from elementary and junior high school students. Prince Hisahito wrote about his trip to the Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands. He went to these Pacific Islands with his mother, Princess Kiko. Though the trip was four years ago, it had a powerful impact on Prince Hisahito. During the online ceremony he commented: ?The islanders took us on tours and we got to see rich nature in the mountains and the seas. The experience of interacting with people on Chichijima and Hahajima remains clearly in my mind.?

Japanese actor and writer, Lily Franky, was part of the selection committee and described Prince Hisahito?s work as balanced, beautiful prose.

IT all seems very complicated, and there doesn't seem to be any will in Japan, in the Imp family or government, for working things out.  I gather that he and Mako will be given a sum of money when she leaves royal life.. and I suppose they are tyring to get that money for their new life.

When a Japanese princess marries she is given an one time sum of money. It is meant to help them continue their quality of life after marriage.

When Ayako married in 2018, she received 107 million yen which is about $975,000 USD. Its a tax free one time sum.

The money is indeed intended to be for Mako and her future. I guess the question would be should the money be used in part to pay off his debts which is not what it is intended for.

With a Law degree from Fordham and passing the bar in New York, Princess Mako's fiance can do very well for himself and the Princess if he pursues law in New York City. Would she be able to live abroad as a member of the Japanese Royal house?

She loses her place in the royal house whether she remains in Japan or not. Sad reality of Japan's rules to this day.

Like royal ladies before her, most recently Ayako, she will lose her title and all place in the Imperial family. They do usually get an one time gift. Ayako received about $970,000 USD.

Normally that also means relinquishing any patronages (though Ayako has kept one). So not living in Japan would mean little in her future.

There is really no financial or societal benefit for them to stay in Japan. If he can land a good job with a firm in NY it would be a good place.

Tudor Queen,
It is unfortunate that the female members of the Japanese Royal family have few rights. I guess the royal tradition has never been to marry for love, but duty and to someone selected by the royal house.

Princess Mako appears to be set to marry  long time fiancee Kei Koumro later this year. She reportedly will forgo the traditional pay out when she leaves the Imperial Family upon marrying a commoner. Reportedly the couple will then reside in New York.

QuoteJapan?s Princess Mako is reportedly set to marry her fianc?, Kei Komuro, by the end of the year, according to Japanese media.

Sources close to the couple have said the Princess and Komuro?s marriage will be registered by the end of 2021. They added that the traditional Imperial Family ceremonies and rituals surrounding the wedding would not be held; these include the Nosai-no-Gi engagement ceremony and the Choken-no-Gi ritual where the royal thanks the Emperor and Empress.

This is a break from tradition that has existed since the end of the Second World War for the royals.

The Princess, who will turn 30 in October, will register the marriage in Japan and remove herself from the Imperial Family register. She will then move to New York, where Komuro is expected to be employed at a law firm. Komuro has resided in New York since 2018 and attended law school in the United States.

Princess Mako has reportedly decided to decline the lump-sum payment she is entitled to as she leaves the Imperial Family; the money comes from taxes, and this could be in response to the financial controversy that has surrounded her long-term boyfriend for the past couple of years. She was set to receive 152.5 million yen (equivalent to a little over one million GBP) ? an amount determined by the Imperial Household Economy Council, which includes Prime Minister Suga.

The Imperial Household Agency is expected to discuss lowering Mako?s payment and if she is able to decline the lump sum.

I am happy they are getting married finally. It seems bittersweet and unceremonious. I hope Mako enjoys living in NYC and that the marriage will be worth the sacrifices she has made.

More on Princess Mako's diagnosis of PTSD.

Japan?s Princess Mako diagnosed with PTSD as marriage date is announced ? Royal Central

QuoteThe Princess has been unwell since 2018 and has been diagnosed with a complex form of PTSD caused by psychological abuse of her and Komuro and their families.

The psychiatrist who diagnosed Mako, Tsuyoshi Akiyama, said complex PTSD develops as a response to repeated trauma experiences like verbal abuse and cyberbullying.

Despite the new diagnosis and troubles surrounding Komuro and his family?s finances, the couple will finally wed on 26 October without the traditional imperial ceremonies. Instead, they will hold a joint press conference that day to share their feelings and will register their marriage before relocating to the United States. Komuro is employed in a New York law firm.

Because of the financial controversy, the traditional ceremonies will not be held. Mako?s father, Crown Prince Akishino, believes that since many Japanese people do not support the union, the imperial ceremonies should not be held. A close friend of his said that not allowing these rites is ?almost equal to disowning Princess Mako? for the heir to the throne. However, in November 2020, he shared his support for the marriage.

Princess Mako will, however, meet her uncle and aunt, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who, according to Yasuhiko Nishimura, grand steward of the Imperial Household Agency, ?wish that (the couple) will have a happy life in the future.?

Her Imperial Highness will also meet her grandparents, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko and visit the Imperial Palace Sanctuaries (which enshrine the spirits of the Imperial Family ancestors). All of this will be done without her fianc?.
