QuoteStrong Dutch presence at next week's Davos meeting

There will be a strong Dutch presence at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2017 which opens next Tuesday in Davos, Switzerland. More than 3,000 government leaders, business chiefs and scientists from around the world will settle in the mountaintop town for the meeting which is noted for its secrecy. The theme this year is responsive and responsible leadership. Prime minister Mark Rutte will head the Dutch government delegation, the Telegraaf reported on Friday. Rutte will be accompanied by finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, foreign trade and development aid minister Lilianne Ploumen, defence minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and health minister Edith Schippers.

While the UK and the Netherlands have their monarchs read a government prepared speech from the throne, not all of them have their royal families participate. In Sweden, Norway and Denmark the royal family is present but the PM typically is the one to read the speech and the royals sit in a gallery.
In the UK the royals are in gala wear but in the Netherlands it's long dresses for the ladies and hats while the gentlemen are in morning suits. The royals in the NL are seen bowing to the royal standard prior to entering the Grote Kerk.

This year due to COVID 19 restrictions, there were no large crowds gathering.

The Dutch government has agreed to review the annual cost of its Royal Family, the House of Orange-Nassau, following pressure from the opposition party.

Yet Prime Minister Mark Rutte has expressed concerns that revealing the exact amount that King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima receive from the Dutch taxpayer might spark calls for a vote on the costs of the monarchy.

Every now and again the subject of the cost of this Royal family rears up, both in the political arena in the Netherlands and out of it. They are certainly among the most expensive monarchies to maintain, more so than the British, though of course they are funded differently, and much more so than any of the Scandi royal Houses. So perhaps in today's economic climate some corners could be cut, but not too drastically.
Title: Re: The Dutch Monarchy Current Events
Post by: TLLK on October 09, 2020, 04:28:01 PM
I agree that they're definitely one of the more expensive monarchies to fund and with a rather small number of "working" members of the Royal House. The Royal House includes: W-A, Maxima, their three daughters, Beatrix, Constantijn and Laurentian along with Princess Margriet (Beatrix's sister), and her husband Pieter. However the vast majority of engagements are carried out by W-A, Maxima and Beatrix. Margriet, Pieter, Constantijn and Laurentian have limited representation and the AAA  team is still in school.

Members of the Royal House | Royal House of the Netherlands (https://www.royal-house.nl/members-royal-house)

Everyone else is considered part of the Royal Family. They're not really involved in any official representation ie: Prinsjedag but are present at family events and on King's Day.

Royal family | Royal House of the Netherlands (https://www.royal-house.nl/members-royal-house/royal-family)

Princess Catharina-Amalia turns 17 ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/princess-catharina-amalia-turns-17-153236/)

QuotePrincess Catharina-Amalia, the heir to the Dutch throne, turns 17 years old today. Unlike last year, the Dutch Royal Family did not release a new photo of the Princess.

The Princess of Orange ? as she is known officially as the heir to the throne ? was born on 7 December 2003. When Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother on 30 April 2013, his eldest child automatically became Princess of Orange as the title no longer differentiated between a male or female heir. Catharina-Amalia is the first woman to hold the title in her own right, despite the Netherlands having had three Queens regnant before her.

She was baptised on 12 June 2004 with Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Baroness Rengers-Deane, Prince Constantijn, Martin Zorreguieta, Herman Tjeenk Willink and Marc ter Haar as godparents. Her full name is Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria. Catharina-Amalia and her sisters attend mayor functions, such as King?s Day and the press moments.

And another article on the same. The King and Queen need to be very careful going forward. Their holiday activities in the past when they were the Prince/Princess of Orange were sometimes called into question regarding where, when and why they were on vacation. Public?s trust in Dutch King plummets ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/publics-trust-in-dutch-king-plummets-154104/)

QuoteThe public?s trust in King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has plummeted from 76% in April of this year to just 47% in December, according to research bureau Ipsos.

There were several moments during 2020 when the King was heavily criticised. During his holiday to Greece in August, the King and Queen were pictured with the owner of a restaurant without taking social distancing into account. Shortly before this, King Willem-Alexander had purchased a new speedboat, costing two million euros. By doing this in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was accused of not showing solidarity with the Dutch people.

Another incident occurred in October when the Royal Family travelled to Greece on the government jet ? shortly after the government had called on the Dutch people to stop travelling abroad. The situation got so out of hand that the King decided to return home. However, it soon became clear that two of their daughters had remained behind, leading to even more criticism. A few days later, King Willem-Alexander and Queen M?xima recorded a video in which they apologised for the breach of trust.

Around 75% of the interviewees called it ?unwise? that the family went on holiday in October, even though it had not been forbidden by the government as Greece was only code yellow at the time. Around 70% said that the image of the Royal Family had been damaged by their actions.

That's a shocking fall in numbers for W-A and Maxi thanks to an ill-judged, ill-timed holiday. People in Europe and elsewhere are feeling extremely irritated and annoyed and upset at this pandemic continuing on and on and on. Of course they are going to lash out at those they see as getting round any restrictions, whoever they might be. This drop isn't terminal though, IMO, and next year when things improve the couple's ratings are likely to get higher.
Title: Re: The Dutch Royal Family
Post by: TLLK on December 29, 2020, 02:44:23 PM
@Curryong-I do agree that it isn't terminal but I was surprised again to see yet another issue associated with their vacations. As I recall the couple rarely has anyone criticizing their domestic activities but there have been complaints regarding their summer holiday activities for years now: ie Plan to invest in a vacation home resort in East Africa which raised concerns about the additional security measures that would have to be taken.  AFAIK the only criticism they received about their winter trip to Lech is that they'd pull their daughters out of school a little early.
Title: Re: The Dutch Royal Family
Post by: Curryong on December 29, 2020, 08:31:44 PM
Maybe there is some hidden resentment about the high cost of the Dutch monarchy as a whole, even though W-A, Maxi and their girls are themselves personally popular?  I don't know much about the Dutch peoples' holiday habits. Apart from trips across the borders to neighbouring countries, are they known as enthusiastic travellers on less travelled routes, as say the Germans are? The Netherlands isn't exactly tropical and the couple seem to like unusual and interesting sunny places, even expressing a wish, as you have pointed out, to have a second home in such locales.

If you are Dutch, earning a reasonable salary but not a high one, are a not very well-travelled person, and you see your well heeled monarch wanting to slither off to exotic sunny climes far from home every year perhaps there's a bit of 'How about holidaying nearby for a change?'. Of course it might be just some irritability, 'fedupitus' being expressed due to Covid restrictions. Nevertheless, perhaps a summer holiday in Belgium or somewhere similar might be advisable next year!
Title: Re: The Dutch Royal Family
Post by: TLLK on December 29, 2020, 10:35:29 PM
@Curryong-One of our Dutch posters on the big forum mentioned today that most people tend to go outside of the country for vacations so I don't think  it's entirely due to the fact that they Royals like to go to sunny locations like Greece, Italy, etc.. W-A did purchase an expensive boat/yacht this summer and it might look out of touch to the average citizen. Plus with Amalia turning 18 in December 2021, she's supposed to begin receiving an allowance from the state.  As to Dutch on holiday, I've followed more than one recreational vehicle with a big old NL sticker on the back on French, Belgian, Italian and German roads and Autobahns.  The most "delightful" moment came in Northern Ireland when an older Dutch couple in  a large camper decided to ignore the well marked "No RVs" on the sign when were were on a very narrow road near the Giant's Causeway. A few minutes prior the teenage shepherd had been moving his flock along in front of us so it was meant really for smaller vehicles like ours. As I recall this was my husband's first day driving on the right and he was getting reacquainted with a standard (stick) gear shift and doing it "backwards." We all survived but the Dutch did receive their fair share of honks and what I'll call "internationally recognized hand gestures" from us and those who were also in the traffic.

I do believe that Wax/Max might want to consider having a long Zoom session with the neighbors Phillipe and Mathilde. One of the major Flemish papers just named Phillipe as 2020's "Man of the Year" due to his impressive handling of welcoming his half-sister into the family and more importantly his leadership throughout the pandemic. IMO this  is very significant as the Flemish have typically been the most critical of the monarchy and the royal family.

Very hilarious and interesting, TLLK. Holidays abroad are such fun, usually.  I am so vague I've never noticed number plates or stickers on cars on holiday or not! I got into a stranger's car instead of our friends car once. Fortunately he took it in good part! Nor have I actually met any Dutch people on holiday to speak to, bar once in New York. I probably never spoke to hundreds of them! How did you like driving on the left in Britain, or did you leave it to your husband?

You're probably right, Amalia's allowance plus an expensive yacht would get many citizens offside. W-A is going to have to budget himself for a year or two. It's a historical anomaly isn't it that the Belg RF are traditionally less popular in the Flemish parts of Belgium, so Phillipe should be proud of himself. Even so, didn't he and Mathilde get into trouble for going to a French spa for a few days when there was a national crisis a few years ago?

The Benelux countries are so tiny that in today's world of course people are going to go abroad for holidays.. but Will and Maxima were supposed to be very popular so now they are bound to be attacked for going on holiday to Greece when travel had just been banned.  And they clearly were in the wrong because they came creeping back...
Seems that Willem's buying a very expensive yacht at present didn't go down well either.

My husband is an excellent driver but we both agreed that for our first day of driving in the UK that we'd literally need two pairs of eyes on the road especially when were were in Belfast which is where we picked up our rental car. When we walked into the rental office that morning, I was thrilled to hear an American accent behind the counter because I knew that this man would be able to give us the pointers that we would need. He gave us great tips and I believe that they made our trip much safer. For the remainder of our cruise around the UK trip we drove in the Scottish Highlands, in the Cotswolds,  around Bath and then up to London. However in urban areas we always took advantage of public transportation.  Now my husband really prefers driving on the German autobahns  and  wants all American freeways/highways to use their method using the left lane ONLY for passing. When we come back from trips I have to remind him that our speed limits are lower and that to not  expect autobahn drivers.

QuoteYou're probably right, Amalia's allowance plus an expensive yacht would get many citizens offside.

IMHO they may want to reconsider that allowance to be delayed until she's finished with her schooling/military training etc..whatever and request it when she's clearly ready to begin her royal activities. AFAIK she wouldn't need to hire staff to coordinate activities or answer correspondence for awhile. I wonder what the Belgians are doing for Elisabeth's "allowance?" I am not sure if she has one yet.

I need to check on the spa story. I can't recall if they were out of the country when the terror attack happened or did they go away after it occurred.

There's little left online of the hoo-ha about Phillipe and Mathilde relaxing at a spa in Brittany at the time of the terror attack, just a couple of magazine articles. A bit of bad luck in timing that particular trip! My goodness, it's been five years since that happened!

King Philippe responds to criticism over spa photo during level 4 terror alert | The Bulletin (https://www.thebulletin.be/king-philippe-responds-criticism-over-spa-photo-during-level-4-terror-alert)

As far as driving on 'opposite' sides of the roads are concerned you're very brave! I was always a bit uneasy in cars driven by British and Aussie drivers in Europe. All it takes is one lapse of concentration etc, but nothing ever happened. My son (then in his twenties) was almost written off once in the US by not registering which way traffic was coming. He stepped off the pavement and whoosh, a bus missed him by an inch!

@Curryong-That experience with your son is why I am forever grateful that parts of the main tourist areas around  London has "Look Left!" written in big white letters on its asphalt  pavement.

Here's an article (in Spanish) that compares and contrasts 2020 for W-A, Phillipe and Felipe. All three had parents who abdicated  for various reasons and came to the throne within a few years of each other. From what I have read in the past all three former monarchs are friendly with each other and reportedly Albert requested advice from Beatrix and JC after Baudoin's death.

W-A originally had the highest approval and his throne was seen to be the most stable with Felipe's being considered the least. 2020 also saw Phillipe and Felipe having to deal with the personal and controversial actions of their fathers' and there was much focus upon how each man would handle it. With Phillipe it was his father's behavior in regards to his daughter Delphine Boel. After the court ruled in her favor, Phillipe invited her to the palace and  she and her children were now to be considered part of the titled members of the Belgian royal family. With Felipe it was was of course Juan Carlos' shady finances  and his subsequent retirement outside of Spain. With W-A it was the Greek vacation.

In regards how they dealt with COVID, Phillipe and Felipe are considered to have handled it better. They were more visible with virtual and when it was possible their in-person visits. The Spanish royals - Felipe, Leonor and Infanta Sofia all had to quarantine at home at different times with Letizia picking up  the slack. Also it was noted that Felipe/Letizia and Phillipe/Mathilde had their children out with them when it was safe to volunteer and meet with the public. In the NL it appeared that the royals were less  visible.

Now I do believe that the Dutch royals can bounce back but I hope this end of the year polling serves as a wake up call to W-A and Maxima. Might be time to have that virtual meeting with Belgium and Spain.

It would indeed be a shame if all the goodwill W-A and Maxi have built up over the years since their marriage remains dissipated by foolish actions and little visibility over the past ten months. As you know, these two are personal favourites of mine as their informal and friendly manner when performing Royal engagements has always resonated with me. I love the genuine friendships between these European Royal Houses as well.

However, as Queen Elizabeth once quipped, 'I have to be seen to be believed' and that is as true of monarchs today as it was then. People can excuse the dip in public appearances during a pandemic of the extremely elderly like Queen Daisy, King Harald (who has in fact been quite busy) and Queens Daisy and Elizabeth.

It's when the sovereign and his wife are only in middle age and become semi-visible for months at a time of crisis it is harder to explain away. When the HOS is extremely respected and popular, it's amazing what some virtual appearances can do in addresses to the nation during difficult times. It provides reassurance that everyone is together in this and it won't last for ever etc.

A few of those messages, plus a real attempt to keep up their public appearances by distance and zoom and so on might well have helped W-A and Maxi when the silly Greek holiday business came to light. It is quite disappointing, and their sincere mea culpas, while sincere, also hit a false note. They are just going to have to be very very careful for the next couple of years and pull the horns back a bit in terms of any extravagances in lifestyle. They are a charismatic couple however, especially Maxi, and I'm sure they can bounce back in popularity and more importantly win back the trust of their people.

Everyone is following the government's rules as well regarding the wearing of masks and social distancing 1.5 m.  (I'm adding this because as we've seen through out 2020 there have been many variations the basics: masks, distance, etc.. ) As I recall the NL like neighboring Germany appeared to have fewer cases early on so their recommendations were far less restrictive than in Italy and Spain so we were seeing photos of TM at in person indoor events without masks and even social distancing seemed closer.

I think about eight months ago when all this was very new I posted about public libraries in a pandemic and wondered whether Covid stays on the pages and covers of books at all when handled by infectious people who didn't necessarily know it.  Same sort of thing I suppose, though customers' masks probably help.

Dutch King and Queen send a message of support after curfew riots ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/dutch-king-and-queen-send-a-message-of-support-after-curfew-riots-155131/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands have sent a message of support to first responders after riots broke out in several cities in the Netherlands.

?Our thanks go out to all those police officers, first responders and municipal employees who are there for our safety. You do fantastic work under the most difficult of circumstances! We feel for all the shop owners and others who were affected by the violence. And we are impressed by the heartwarming response of those people who came to help. We will get through this together.?

The riots began as a protest against the newly implemented nighttime curfew (from 9 PM until 4.30 AM) to curb the spread of the coronavirus. However, these quickly spiralled into violent riots in several cities over several nights. In Eindhoven, rioters targetted the central station. Windows were smashed, several shops were looted and a car belonging to the national railway services was tipped over and set on fire.

The following day, several inhabitants of Eindhoven showed up with their own brooms to help clean up the mess and crowdfunding for a woman who saw her shop completely destroyed has so far raised over ?100.000. After three nights, the most intense riots seem to be contained, but unrest remains in several cities.

I get that people are frustrated that they cannot go out at night, but looting, setting fires and smashing windows doesn't change that there is a need to stop the spread of the virus.

It does my heart good that mental health is being recognized as important.  That old idea to ?tough it through? is so harmful.

When I was a fairly new nurse, mental health was whispered about. Psych rotation was dreaded.  Now - I have a wealth of programs to refer my patients to. People are more willing to talk about issues.  There is a long way to go but I think we are moving in the right direction.  At least here in Canada.

The second half, ?Fatherland? will come out later and examine her years in the Netherlands. The author is Marcia Luyten.

Dutch royals head to Eindhoven to celebrate scaled-down King?s Day ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/dutch-royals-head-to-eindhoven-to-celebrate-scaled-down-kings-day-159171/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander, Queen M?xima and their daughters, the Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, have left Paleis Huis ten Bosch to travel to Eindhoven to celebrate a scaled-down King?s Day. A photo was released in which the royals posed in front of the Palace.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the celebrations have been scaled down for the second year in a row. In 2019, Royal Central was able to report directly from the celebrations in Amersfoort. The King and his family will travel to the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, where they will take part in a special TV show, which will also be live-streamed, with the theme of ?getting to know each other.?

The public has been asked to stay at home and to keep all celebrations local. The lines in front of bakeries stretched around the block in some cases as people lined up to buy orange tompouce pastries.

Prime Minister Rutte congratulated King Willem-Alexander on his 54th birthday on Twitter. ?I wish him a beautiful and festive day with his family in Eindhoven. And I wish everyone in the Netherlands a subdued, safe but above all a happy #KingsDay!?

Unfortunately the King's approval rating remains low.

King?s Day survey shows King Willem-Alexander?s approval rating still low ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/kings-day-survey-shows-king-willem-alexanders-approval-rating-still-low-159169/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander may celebrate his 54th birthday today, but his approval rating is still recovering from his ill-timed holiday to Greece.

A survey held by Ipsos late last year showed a steep decline from 76% in April 2020 to just 47%. This figure has now risen slightly to 57%. This is still significantly lower than in previous years. Queen M?xima?s approval rating also suffered as a result of the holiday to Greece, and she has an approval rating of just 68%. Around 75% of those questioned also felt that the allowance for his eldest daughter Princess Amalia, which she will receive upon her 18th birthday in December, is much too high at 1,6 million euro.

The overall support for the monarchy is still greater than any support for a republic, but that too fell from 75% to 58%. Around 25% said that the Netherlands should become a republic, most of which were young people. The Dutch people are also critical of the role of the King and Queen during the pandemic. Almost 50% believed they were visible enough last year, but this has now gone down to 26%. Just 23% felt they were being supported by the King and Queen, and 40% believed that the King and Queen have no idea what is going in the society right now.

Why on earth would an 18 year old, still at home, need 1.8 mill euros???   If she was setting up her own household and foundation, paying for staff etc, I could see it, sort of.  But if this is personal allowance, jeez.

This coming year, when she hits 18, she will be given $111,000. But it has been clarified $20,000 will serve as an allowance while the other 91,000 are for expenses and and operations. And when she is increased over 1 million euros, she will get $300,000 income from that.

Dutch Princess Amalia?s 2021 allowance revealed ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/dutch-princess-amalias-2021-allowance-revealed-149273/)

I am not sure how much expense she will have for she won't have too much staff or engagements to fund while she is likely to be in college.

But that begs the question: how much stock do we put in a poll that gets basic information that wrong and misleads the public?

I'm very glad that these solemn remembrance events were able to take place yesterday. Typically May 5 is the celebration day when there are concerts and other events to remember the joy of liberation from the Nazis.  I know that the Netherlands has an especially close bond with Canada as that nation welcomed then Princess Juliana and her daughters as refugees during WWII with Princess Margriet being born in Canada. Also the country played a great role in liberating the kingdom too.  Ottawa receives an annual thank you gift of tulip bulbs from the Netherlands.

Yes the Canadians were there with the British in the liberation of the Netherlands. The Canadian combat in Europe in WW2 is too often forgotten.
The Nazis did dreadful things in the Netherlands, as they did in all the countries they occupied. Wrecking dykes causing farmlands to flood, and that last wretched winter of the war which caused terrible hunger due to no food supplies.

Very true @Curryong. It's these significant and relatively recent events in our human history that I have serious concerns that they'll be too soon forgotten or ignored. I'm so happy that as a family we've been able to travel to Europe and to view not only beautiful castles and cathedrals, but the more solemn sites such as the D Day beaches and the various WWI and WWII memorials there so we can discuss this with our children.  They are in the unique position of having great-grandfathers who fought on both sides. My son had just finished his high school World History class so he was especially impressed by the sites in Normandy and you could see the challenges that the invading Allied forces had to face that day in June.

Just three years ago we were all sharing a cone of frites and were standing in a very bustling Dam Square. I was pointing out the various royal and national monuments to our kids. Had I not visited sites like this one, I would not have the same knowledge and connection to them.

Yes, there is nothing like seeing all these sites, experiencing the ambience of different cities and countries for yourself, and if you can do it in a family party all the better. I remember two of my kids not really appreciating many of the things they saw at the time, but they did later when they were able to visit as young adults.

Every year Ottawa has a tulip festival - its gorgeous and a photographers dream.

It is a celebration of the gift of tulips made by the Dutch in thanks for both Canada?s part in the liberation of their country in WW2 and in hosting the royal family.

About The Canadian Tulip Festival

The Canadian Tulip Festival was established to celebrate the historic Royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians immediately following the Second World War as a symbol of international friendship. The Festival preserves the memorable role of the Canadian troops in the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe, as well as commemorates the birth of Dutch Princess Margriet in Ottawa during World War II?the only royal personage ever born in Canada

Yes I thought he'd have to give it up once he ascended to the throne, but it appears that "Mr. Van Amsberg" has been keeping up his flight hours the whole time.

In 2017, he revealed that he'd fly twice a month on scheduled KLM flights and that hardly anyone recognized him in his cap and uniform as he walked through Schipool Airport.

Dutch king reveals he held part-time job as airline pilot | Netherlands | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/17/dutch-king-willem-alexander-admits-to-working-part-time-as-an-airline-pilot)

QuoteThe Dutch king has revealed that for more than two decades he has, alongside his royal duties, held down a part-time second job.

In a newspaper interview published on Wednesday, King Willem-Alexander said that he recently ended his role as a regular ?guest pilot? after 21 years on KLM?s fleet of Fokker 70 planes and before that on Dutch carrier Martinair.

As a guest flier, the king worked about twice a month, always as co-pilot. He will now retrain to fly Boeing 737s as the Fokkers are being phased out of service. The 50-year-old father of three and monarch to 17 million Dutch citizens calls flying a ?hobby? that lets him leave his royal duties on the ground and fully focus on something else.

He didn't have to announce his name as co-pilot, but sometimes passengers would recognize his voice during announcements...if they were paying attention. :hehe:

QuoteAnd even when he makes announcements to passengers, Willem-Alexander says that as a co-pilot he doesn?t have to give his name. So while some people recognise his voice, it does not happen often. ?Most people don?t listen anyway,? he added.

Fantastic photos of the Berlin skyline today as the couple meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel atop the Bundestag. And yes I think that Angela is truly bemused by Maxima's hat today.  It's been awhile since Maxima has worn a hat that has captured my attention but just when I think that she's too predictable, she finds a way to prove me wrong. The hat is a repeat of one that she wore to Royal Ascot.

Honestly I don't believe that I've ever seen Angela in anything but her trademark black slacks and sensible jacket.  :D

Living up to her name tonight is Queen Maxima in a repeated light blue tiered lace gown with a spectacular aquamarine necklace. Bless the late Juliana who had the foresight to create a large foundation for the royal jewelry. Perhaps she knew that one day there would be a Queen of the Netherlands who would wear those pieces to perfection. Hmm....how would Maxima used her creativity if she'd married into a Royal House with a fairly sparse collection ie: Belgium???? The Belgians have very few tiaras though some are convertible into necklaces and bracelets. This would have taken all of Maxima's imagination to create her stunning looks.  :Jen:

It would indeed have meant a lot of ingenuity on Maxi?s part. Perhaps she would have borrowed from Brussels jewellers. I do love the aquamarines and gown though!

I?ve never really understood why the Belgians have so few pieces. I always understood that Fabiola had several magnificent parures. Where are they?  Astrid was given many gifts of jewellery when she married. Did Leopold?s second wife, alias the Wicked Witch of the West, snaffle most of them and then sell them?

@Curryong-From what I've read it was a matter of gifting pieces to female family members combined with some selling that left the Belgian vault rather sparse. Reportedly this is what prompted Juliana's action. With four daughters and a large number of grandchildren, she did want to ensure that the collection would remain intact but available to those who needed to use them. While the Dutch Royal House is kept purposely small, the extended Royal Family is rather large. Thus the ladies have been able to have access to pieces for big events at home and abroad. How else would a female monarch or queen consort plus former female monarch and many sisters/in-laws been able to have something special to wear to weddings, birthday galas and enthronements?

I really wish this queen who has all the money in the world to fix her hair would do something with it.....it is an ugly mess 99.99% of the time.  She is a vibrant woman who I think really enjoys meeting people yet most of the time, her clothes and hair look so messy.  Surely she has an area in the palace for a hairdresser and sink and mirrors........LOL

I don?t think Maxi cares about her hair sometimes being messy. She?s been like that since her engagement. And it?s thin flyaway hair that you often can?t do anything with, especially out of doors. She?s so full of verve and enthusiasm anyway. And her clothes are sometimes beautiful, colourful and original, even if she does tend to colour-block by preference Love her, always have!

Her messy hair has been a standard part of her look. I don't think she always cares that much about her hair. Sometimes her hair is slick and neat, and other times it is windblown and messy.

King Willem-Alexander visits Rotterdam in aftermath of riots ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/king-willem-alexander-visits-rotterdam-in-aftermath-of-riots-168942/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander has travelled to Rotterdam in the wake of riots in the city.

The King of the Netherlands went to Rotterdam City Hall on November 22nd 2021, just hours after protests in the area against new coronavirus restrictions turned violent again. Other Dutch municipalities have also been affected by demonstrations and outbreaks of rioting against the new measures.

King Willem-Alexander spoke to the fire brigade, police, ambulance and others affected after the riots. Among other things, the king got to talk to civilians who were injured and shop owners who had their premises attacked and looted.

The Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb said that he thought it was incredibly thoughtful that the king had spontaneously come to Rotterdam not only in good times, such as the opening of a museum depot, but also in bad times. ?Those caught during the riots had a terrible time. I have never experienced it this bad. They had to fight for their lives,? said the mayor.

In his conversations with those affected, the king gave a clear message that such behaviour cannot be accepted in the Dutch society.

The King expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the emergency services who were involved and wanted to express his compassion. His Majesty said: ?On behalf of ninety percent of the Dutch population who think that this is not a good way to act I want to expressed my thanks to the police and emergency services?.

King Willem-Alexander remembers peace conference during government dinner ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/king-willem-alexander-remembers-peace-conference-during-government-dinner-174824/)

QuoteKing Willem-Alexander and Queen M?xima hosted a dinner for government members at Huis ten Bosch Palace.

On the evening of Tuesday, 29 March, Their Majesties offered dinner to the members of the new Rutte government, who were installed on 10 January.

The dinner marked the conclusion of the rounds of welcome audiences that King Willem-Alexander held with all 20 ministers plus the nine secretaries of state over the course of the past two months.

The King and Queen welcomed the members of the cabinet and their partners in the Orange Hall of the Palace for a meal, during which His Majesty gave a speech, illustrating the stance of the country on the challenges it is facing.

Speaking about the last month, the King highlighted the role the Netherlands played in history for other peace conferences, most notably in 1899 for the First Hague Peace Conference, where Queen Wilhelmina acted as a host for Tsar Nicholas II?s Russia and other 26 countries.

On the centenary of the conference, in 1999, the then-Prince of Orange travelled to St Petersburg to take part in ?The Future of War,? a meeting designed to celebrate the values of Europe for peace, stability and prosperity.

A touching tribute to Ukraine marks the official beginning of the Indian State Visit to the Netherlands ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/netherlands/a-touching-tribute-to-ukraine-marks-the-official-beginning-of-the-indian-state-visit-to-the-netherlands-174988/)

QuoteTuesday, 5 April, marked the official beginning of the Indian State Visit to the Netherlands, during which President Ram Nath Kovind and First Lady Savita Kovind visited the northern European country upon the invitation of King Willem-Alexander.

Like every state visit, the trip began with the official welcome ceremony, where the President and the King inspected the Honour Guard in Dam Square in Amsterdam.

Following the guard inspection, the two heads of state and their wives made their way inside the Royal Palace, where the two delegations took part in a reception.
His Majesty then continued by highlighting the importance of international relationships, especially during moments of crisis, and retraced the history of the relations between India and the Netherlands.

The visit will be carried out through Wednesday, 6 April and is carried out in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Indian-Dutch diplomatic relationships.

The President and First Lady?s trip began on Monday with a christening ceremony for a new tulip, the Maitri, in the presence of the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs. The name means ?friendship? in Hindi, and the specimen comes from the flower bulb company Jan de Wit & Zonen. The Netherlands are famous worldwide for its tulips, and annual festivals are abundant all around the country.

This visit comes as India is facing a lot of international scrutiny because of its position towards Russia in the Ukrainian conflict, as well as the political crisis currently unfolding in neighbouring Pakistan.

Today is King's Day in the Netherlands which is a national holiday that coincides with the King's actual birthday with everyone being permitted to have a nationwide "garage sale" and huge street parties.  Today members of the Dutch royal family will visit the city of Maastricht.  The family is typically joined by the King's brother Constantijn and sister-in-law Laurentian along with his four cousins and their wives. It's a relaxed and celebratory event with the majority of the family participating in various activities-dancing, skating, etc...

News on Queen Maxima's trip to Africa.

Queen M?xima begins financial trip to Africa ? Royal Central (https://royalcentral.co.uk/europe/queen-maxima-begins-financial-trip-to-africa-177971/)

QuoteQueen M?xima has landed in Ivory Coast?s capital Abidjan as part of a four-day visit that will also take her to Senegal as UN Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development.

Her Majesty landed aboard an Air France flight at around 9 pm local time on Sunday, 12 June. Upon arrival, she was welcomed by Ivory Coast?s Prime Minister Patrick Achi, and the two of them were heard speaking French.

The Prime Minister then expressed his happiness at the Queen?s arrival, a sign of the importance such a visit has, not only for the profile of the guest but especially because of the topics it will cover.

The Royal House of the Netherlands has stated: ?The main themes of both visits are financial health and the further development of affordable and secure digital financial services?, a topic that is very familiar for the Dutch Queen since she has a degree in Economics from the Argentinian Catholic University, and a Master?s Degree in the US on the same topics.

King W-A will not accompany Queen Maxima on the working trip to  the United States as he is recovering from pneumonia.

King Willem-Alexander unable to join working visit to the United States; Queen M?xima?s presence not affected | News item | Royal House of the (https://www.royal-house.nl/latest/news/2022/09/01/king-willem-alexander-unable-to-join-working-visit-to-the-united-states-queen-maximas-presence-not-affected)

QuoteHis Majesty King Willem-Alexander will not participate in the working visit to California and Texas from 6 to 9 September 2022. This decision has been made on doctors? advice. The King is recovering from pneumonia and air travel at this time could impede a full recovery. The King?s commitments in the Netherlands will not be affected by this decision and will go ahead as planned, albeit on a more limited scale.

Queen M?xima and the members of the government taking part in the visit will step in for him in his absence. An updated programme will be announced in due course.
