It is one of the most prestigious Orders of Chivalry in Europe. It was founded by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy in 1430 and has since been divided into two different Orders, the Spanish version of the Order with the King of Spain as Sovereign and the Austrian version under the leadership of Karl von Habsburg.
