Information about the Swedish Royal Residences

The Royal Palace of Stockholm
The Royal Palace of Stockholm is the official residence of the Swedish monarch as well as the setting for the monarch's official receptions. The Royal Palace is located on Stadsholmen in Stockholm, Sweden's capital. It neighbors the Riksdag, Sweden's parliament. The offices of the monarch (King Carl XVI Gustaf) and the other members of the Swedish Royal Family as well as the offices of the Royal Court of Sweden are located there.

The palace was built in the baroque style and has over 600 rooms on 7 floors. In addition to being an official residence and a place of work, the palace also houses 3 museums and is open year round for guided tours. (read more about The Royal Palace of Stockholm...)

Drottningholm Palace
Drottningholm Palace is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It is located in Drottningholm, on the island Lovön (in Ekerö Municipality of Stockholm County). It was originally built in the late 16th century and served as a residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century. Apart from being the private residence of the Swedish royal family, the palace is a popular tourist attraction. The Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO´s World Heritage list of places that are of outstanding universal value to humanity, representing the best examples of the world´s cultural and natural heritage. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia

Upon his accession, the King chose to drop most of the ancient titles of the Swedish King, and instead style himself as King of Sweden.

The King is the Head of State of the Kingdom of Sweden, and represents the country abroad at State Visits, and official functions abroad. He also is the Head of the Swedish Armed Forces.  One of the most famous duties as King of Sweden is presenting the Noble Prizes every year.

The King married Silvia Sommerlath on June 1976 and have three children together: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel

As Crown Princess and Heir Apparent to the throne of Sweden, Her Royal Highness carries hundreds of engagements per year in aid of charitable organizations, the Swedish Government and people and the Swedish Crown.  The Crown Princess married Daniel Westling on 19 June 2010. In 1997, Daniel started his own fitness consulting company, and later started running a gym. The Prince currently owns two gyms in Stockholm.

Prince Carl Philip

Prince Carl Philip is the second child of three and the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. He was born Carl Philip Edmund Bertil in Stockholm on 13 May 1979 and is styled Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland.

As the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, the prince was the heir to the throne for a few months after he was born in 1979. But in 1980 the rules were changed and the principle of primogeniture was introduced. His sister, Crown Princess Victoria is now heir.

Princess Madeleine

Her Royal Highness The Princess Madeleine, born Maledene Thérèse Amélie Joséphine at Drottningholm Palace to the King and Queen of Sweden on 10 June 1982. The Princess speaks Swedish and fluent English, German and French.

She enjoys sports, and is a keen rider – the Princess owns several horses and has entered competitions to show her talents. Like most Swedes, The Princess enjoys skiing and has interests in theatre, dance and the arts.
