King Carlos I of Portugal (1863-1908) reigned from 1889 to 1908. He was the son of King Luis I and Queen Maria Pia.   
As heir to the throne, Carlos was styled Prince Royal and Duke of Braganza from birth. He had a great interest in languages and oceanography.

Carlos became King of Portugal upon his father's demise on October 19, 1889 and was formally enthroned on December 28.   
The first foreign state visit made by King Edward VII of Great Britain in 1903 was to Portugal.
