The event was opened with a speech by la Caixa Banking Foundation President Emilia Jordi and words from Vall d'Hebron University Hospital neurologist Patricia Pozo, on behalf of the former la Caixa recipients.

The King and Queen then presented the scholarships alongside a delegation of attending authorities. King Felipe spoke about how the scholarships are "an expression of a philosophy, of a conscious strategy that the future of our youth and our society depends to a great extent on having access to the best training. They are aid to carry out high studies of postgraduate, masters and doctorate in some of the most prestigious educational institutions of the world."
