In 1931 Lady Jean met Niall Rankin and they announced their wish to wed. Jean's father Lord Stair was unimpressed that, due to his parents' separation, Niall had never met his own father, and was totally impoverished.
Lord Stair urged Niall to rectify these problems and forbade his daughter's marriage. Niall approached his father, Sir Reginald Rankin. Reginald was so taken with Jean that he declared that he would leave his son all his money.
Lady Jean and Niall were engaged in July 1931.
